An ideal companion for your compact, APS-C mirrorless camera, the E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens from Sony offers a versatile equivalent zoom range of 24-75mm as well as a retractable design that makes your system much more manageable when not in use. Helping to deliver excellent optical quality throughout the range are an extra-low dispersion element and four aspherical elements to combat various aberrations and improve contrast. The lens also incorporates Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and a power zoom mechanism, both of which will help you capture smooth and steady stills and video. Additionally, it has an internal focus design, a minimum focus distance of 9.8", and uses a seven-blade circular aperture for smooth bokeh. Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 16-50mm lens will provide a versatile standard zoom range that is equivalent to 24-75mm. A variable aperture of f/3.5-5.6 helps keep the lens' overall size and weight to a minimum. One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality. Four aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur. Enjoy smooth zooms ideal for shooting movies with the power zoom mechanism available in this lens.

A wonderfully slim lens

This lens came with my A6400 but I would have bought it anyway. A lovely unobtrusive companion to the slim bodied camera which gives me the ability to use such a powerful combination in a way I've only been able to do with a compact.I love the image stabilisation as it allows me to use narrow apertures without compromising sharpness and detail. The power zoom is quick and smooth in use.Ideal for informal gatherings and travel photography.

An under rated lens that punches above it's weight

I bought this lens with the A6000 camera body at a very competitive price, along side the obviously more expensive Sony SELP18105G f4 fixed aperture lens. I like the super-compact proportions of the lens which allow the camera+lens to be stashed in a very small camera bag [at an exceptionally low carry weight] and cover all-the-bases for everyday use. It's a great add-on to the A6000 camera body without the bulk of the 18-105mm lens. There's some chatter from the zoom/focus motor. However, if you can get past that [and combine it with Sony's affordable Lens Correction App] it's an all round winner....!

Good compact lens but bad vignetting

This lens is, in concept, an excellent lens for the Sony 600 series cameras for around town and for indoor photography. It distorts very littel but very bad vignetting is a recurrent problem. The vignetting seems to be independent of the aperture used and although Lightroom wil correct it the inevitable cropping of the frame is irritating. 5 stars for its compactness, lightness and range of focal length but 2 stars off for the vignetting

Highly capable travel lens, and it's barely bigger than a body cap!
6 September 2018

It's a tiny, light, and fun lens. However in close inspection and in use, it proves to be rather sharp, reliable, and utterly effective at most things an average person does with a walk-around camera. The 16-50 range is fine and with the sharpness it has in the center, it can be cropped either in Sony camera's in-camera digital zoom beyond 50, or it can simply be cropped in software. It outperforms a lot of much larger and heavier kit-lens range glass too. It just works each time, and focus is fast and reliable too, when used with a modern A series. It is a APS-C lens but it does what it is designed for, very well. It does distort the image slightly at extreme ranges, but not enough to be bothersome unless one is looking closely at the results for flaws. My only ... MoreIt's a tiny, light, and fun lens. It is a APS-C lens but it does what it is designed for, very well. It does distort the image slightly at extreme ranges, but not enough to be bothersome unless one is looking closely at the results for flaws. My only peeve is that the lens does increase the power-up time for Sony A series camera, as it extends the barrel for shooting. But that is totally forgivable as it compacts to half the size when powered off, especially as a daily carry around or travel. At $300 new MSRP it is a questionable purchase for many, as for a little more, there are much more specialized lenses in the $500 range. But with a kit purchase, it is much more reasonable with it being less than $200 over the price of camera body only price. Also inthe used market these are a dime a dozen at $150 for a very decent barely used condition lens. It probably won't be your art lens to do something specific, but for everything other than those tasks, it certainly does a lot of great photography. Especially for something that is nearly as compact as a body cap! The photo of a A7 with a LA-EA4 Adapter and Minolta 28-135 vs a NEX6 with 16-50 kit. This pancake 16-50 does 95% of what this bigger combination does. At 1/4th the price, and less than 1/3 of the weight and size. So when it is mission-critical, I have the big rig, but if I am just traveling around town or around the world, I think hard and walk off with the smaller setup most of the time, and for a great reason.

Inexpensive, small, comfortable to carry kit lens for the photo beginner

This is the kit lens I bought for my A6000 because I wanted a small vacation lens that was not heavy and intrusive, kind of "I dont really care" lens, i have a 18-105 f4 G,great lens but is big and much more expensive. To my surprise the images that came out of this little lens where not half bad Many reviews give it very low grade, but I think you have to take this lens for what it is and put it into context. Is small, VERY small (great for walking around, vacation, going to the beach and not really care what you are carrying , has OSS (VR or IS for the Nikon and Canon users), has a range of 24mm to 75mm, in other words very practical. Image quality is not great, but not terrible either, again vacations, walking around, casual image taking etc. For the price I ... MoreThis is the kit lens I bought for my A6000 because I wanted a small vacation lens that was not heavy and intrusive, kind of "I dont really care" lens, i have a 18-105 f4 G,great lens but is big and much more expensive. Has a slow aperture, but every kit lens is slow f3.5-5.6 Focus is precise but not really fast Color rendition and contrast is also average to weak, but if you use Light Room or even iPhoto software you can tweak contrast etc. Is it as sharp as a the Touit Zeiss 32mm f1.8? Off course not, but the Touit is 600$ (more than the body A6000). Overall I dont regret buying it, dont buy it if you are a professional photographer (duh), but the average to the advanced enthusiast will appreciate the commodity of this small practical kit lens

Second replacement of the identical lens.
20 April 2023

This is my third identical lens. The first one came as kit lens as new with an alpha6000 body. After the warranty expired the first lens could not be zoomed in one direction. So I bought a second identical lens in used but pretty good condition. Recently, that lens developed a problem. It will not retract back when the camera is turned off. So I bought this third one in advertised Mint condition. Hope this one works for me.

Sharp Pics, Poor Zoom Control!
28 October 2019

I purchased this lens instead of the more usual 18-55mm lens that is the usual first choice for the Sony NEX 5N. The lens elements are of good quality and produce sharp pictures, however it has many shortcomings! Build quality is cheap and all plastic, but the main problem with this lens is a lack of a dedicated zoom ring. Instead, there is a slider button to the side of the lens which is slow to respond and also does not allow any fine control. All in all, considering the price of the lens, my opinion is to stick with the 18-55mm Sony lens which is both cheaper, controllable and much better build quality. I have both lenses in my kit and from now on it is the 18-55mm lens I will be using!

Smart compromise
23 June 2014

I got the E PZ 16-50mmas the kit lens with a Nex 5R in early 2013. Before that I was using the 18-55 mm kit lens with a first-generation Nex-5. My first impressions were inevitably influenced by the comparison:- the 16-50 is significantly smaller and lighter than the 18-55. I love this, because compactness is a high priority for my needs. With this lens I had a truly pocketable camera, like the old Nex with the 16mm pancake, but with a versatile zoom instead.- the lens struck me as visibly sharper than the old kit. I hadn't updated the firmware of the 18-55 for phase focussing, and the new lens came witth this capability as native. And the old body didn't have phase focus at all, so the combination 5R+16-50 was notably faster to focus and produced sharper images ... MoreI got the E PZ 16-50mmas the kit lens with a Nex 5R in early 2013. With this lens I had a truly pocketable camera, like the old Nex with the 16mm pancake, but with a versatile zoom instead.- the lens struck me as visibly sharper than the old kit. I hadn't updated the firmware of the 18-55 for phase focussing, and the new lens came witth this capability as native. And the old body didn't have phase focus at all, so the combination 5R+16-50 was notably faster to focus and produced sharper images than the Nex-5 + 18-55.- This is where the good news ended. I started discovering some of the lens's deficiencies. It produces less even focus from centre to periphery: while sharpness in the centre is higher, the corners more visibly lose fine detail than on the older kit.- Image quality challenges are most prominent at the wide end: at 16mm the RAW (ARW) image is much more distorted than the fixed-length 16mm pancake. It can look almost like 'fish-eye' (especially with urban shots with lots of off-centre straight lines).- There is also heavy vignetting - darkening of the periphery. In addition to the gradual darkening, a completely black circular vignette can occur from the thinnest add-on like a simple filter in front of the lens, or a (properly wide) lens hood. As the corners get less light and less detail, noise becomes more apparent there, even at moderate ISO values like 400-800. Any low-light shots of detail-rich scenes at the wide end of the zoom would disappoint with below-average image quality. Not what one would expect from Sony?..-The workaround: shooting in JPEG produces, counter-intuitively, better images than RAW. How can this be? Simply, Sony are aware of the lens limitations and the in-camera conversion includes correction algorithms, that largely neutralise the geometric distortion and the darkening of corners.- This is when I discovered Lens Profils in Lightroom. I had never used them before, because other lenses needed less correction. With the correct lens profile for the 16-50 lens, post-processing corrections on the PC are even better than the in-camera ones. From 'bad' originals you can get results anywhere from 'acceptable' to 'very good'. The lens-specific corrections cover not only distortion and vignetting, but also chromatic aberration (colour fringing) and fine-tuning all parameters can produce crisp, excellent looking images.Conclusion: Knowing the lens limitations and applying the right post-processing corrections allows you to deliver high quality images with the E PZ 16-50mm. I own a number of higher-quality Sony and non-Sony lenses, prime (fixed-length) and zooms - but nothing beats the humble 'kit zoom' for the combination of versatility and compactness that makes it my go-to lens for all situations when I don't carry a camera bag and need a camera in my pocket or in my laptop case. Some of my images produced with this lens have won awards or were sold via Getty Images.Attached are examples of different subjects and light conditions;

User friendly lense

Bought this with my Sony a6400. It does a job but the quality is ok. Considering it’s the kit lense I think it could offer better value/quality. It’s small and compact works well in that way but a little better image quality would be a mice touch to the package.

Very small and cheap starter lens
18 April 2021

Pros: small, easy to pocket, good for vloging in bright environment, descent Lende for taking typical use case pics between 16-50mm range and works as good compact setup.Cons: you quickly overshoot the f3.5 beyond f4.0 after 20mm zoom, if weight is not a factor to carry then f4.0 18-105mm would be great choice for Allrounder coverage when on travel. The OSS zoom makes more noise and it’s. It good, when powered on or off the lens makes noisy and fast barrel move which is not pleasant, lens build is not good as it wobbles. This lens is okay only to start with and consider overall daily usage and it’s cheaper when purchased with bossy as a kit lens. An inexpensive lens which can be packed for a risky shoots and rugged use.
