I can hear the motor, because I was looking to see if I could hear the motor due to other peoples reviews - but it is fine - not an issue - no second thoughts here. The weight of the lens is also OK by me. it is not my heaviest lens by any stretch of the imagination. The construction of the lens is very good. And, the pictures I’ve taken are very sharp. I will keep this lens. It is great. I had it out all day yesterday. I am looking and hoping that there are some discounts before February 1st, 2021.

The Sony Zeiss 50mm F 1.4 Planar is a superior lens. It gives you GREAT detail in image quality and even when wide open at 1.4 it is SUPER sharp! The click less aperture control is superb when it comes to shooting video. HOWEVER there is always a flaw in any product and for this one in particular that was the weight and size of the lens itself. I was severely disappointed in the fact that the engineers from Sony/ Zeiss put into account the size when it comes to mounting it to the Sony A7 series. The diameter of the lens is very wide so if you have a quick release plate mounted to your camera you will need to set that back a significant amount in order to mount the lens. But if its within your budget I personally would get a cage to bring up the camera so that the quick release is placed a fastened in the correct spot. Other than this the image quality is impeccable. I would give it 5 stars but I had so much issues with the weight Ill give it a nice 4 star review! An alternative to this lens is the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 planar for canon or nikon (just need the metabones adaptor) I actually got the metabones for nikon to Sony and bought the nikon mount because that has the manual aperture ring as well! I prefer my way due to the fact that it is cheaper and you get the same image quality.

Making up for the size is the 11 blade iris which gives off a very smooth and circular bokeh (most lenses are 7-9 blade) and a manual aperture ring that can also be de clicked for smooth adjustment. The autofocus is fairly fast but the Rokinon was faster (but a bit less accurate). The manual focus ring is quite responsive compared to other Sony fly by wire electronic focus rings, and I could get consistent repetitive rack focuses with it. If you are making a living with your photos and or video and could use a great 50mm in your lineup this lens is definitely worth it. Its one of the best 50mm available and definitely the best one for an E mount. If youre a hobbyist or a pro on a tighter budget Id say the Rokinon is a better bang for the buck and is 90% of the lens for about 45% of the price, with a smaller size/weight advantage. It was hard to choose between a 4 or a 5 star (I wish I could have done a 4.5) but I ended up giving this lens a 4 because of the size being larger than most other 50mm 1.4 which is a bigger deal when the lens is designed for small mirrorless cameras, and because I think the price is a big higher than it should be like many Sony lenses. Id personally think this lens should be priced about $1200, and it may be in a few years.

Altogether, I am very happy with this lens, its' size does not provide the least impediment to my photography: I highly recommend it without reservation. The 50mm is perfect for anybody who thinks 85mm is too tight and the 35mm is too wide. The 50 was the focal length used by the most well-known street photographer of all time, Henri Cartier-Bresson. I think its a beautiful focal length. To me, it is the lens that has the most balance in photography. Theres little sacrifice because it lets you focus in on a particular subject while also giving you enough space to put enough details in the background.As for the lens itself, the Planar T is ultra sharp wide open f/1.4. The color balance changes immediately to this rich palette of subtle colors that seems to be just right. It gets that balance correct. Coupled with the stabilizer system and the eye focus feature which I am now using with this lens, my street shots are clear, focused like a bell, and magnificently balanced in color. I love this lens and aside from its size, I'm not absolutely convinced it is perfect for the streets but I am really enjoying it. And I am happy with the results. Hats off to the marriage of Zeiss and Sony with this magnificent marriage. They got it right, and you'll be happy with this choice to get the most out of your Sony camera. Buy this lens first. I suspect you'll be buying more fixed length versions in the end as I surely will.

It was a very good lens until it started to fall apart. I noticed that auto focus was failing. Then I heard something that sounded like a screw clicking around inside. This lens had the best of care. I baby my gear as much as possible.I sent this lens out to be repaired. The quote was $363. I will buy a new 50mm GM instead. I have had no issues with my GM lenses. I did accidentally damage my 70/200 GM and was fine with paying to have it repaired. I'm a huge Zeiss fan and this one, lake many other I had in the past, didn't disappoint. The lens is built like a tank and feels undestructable. Razor sharp at 1.4. Micro contrast is superb and those who shoot with Zeiss know what I'm referring to. After I switched from Canon to Sony, I am using only Zeiss primes...all of them are simply incredible. I think this 50 is a pure winner!
Photographer for 40+ years. Shot Contax with Zeiss optics in my film days. Moved to Sony with the A900 and the Zeiss lenses when Contax was abandoned by Kyrocera. Moved to Sony Mirrorless with the A7R.While there are a nice selection of FE mount 50mm lenses, I tried many and when I tried the Zeiss 50/1.4 ... WHAM! ... there it was! The Zeiss look, feel and character I prefer over all others with the possible exception of Leica.One of the best creative still lenses for the FE mount, especially for the price!
