I’m happy to say that the Sony AN1000 fixes this issue, I was blown away with how I could FINALLY hear the dialogue between characters and that I didn’t have to turn my surround sound up only to lower it during the action scene taking place 20 seconds after the conversation. Not only was the clarity in the conversations great when the 5.1 surround was on it even worked for 2.1 channel incase your watching old videos or listening to record player.Sony has done a great job in every aspect of this receiver, the set up is simple and the prompts are easy to follow and understand. The updating is quick and easy, you can see it on the display screen and the wifi performance for downloads is quick and install is without issue. For the initial setup you will need a tape measurer if you want the perfect sound I would highly recommend not guessing the distances and measure as instructed. The AN1000 is packed with every feature imaginable for listening from chromecast/Spotify connect/Airplay and works with Sonos (with adapter). The AN1000 supports all the latest and greatest audio formats (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X , DTS: virtual). I did notice that the AN1000 tends to keep the sound more true to life and does not overly dramatize explosions/affects, this isn’t to say that the explosions/affects are toned down I would say they are more cinematic sounding. Sony also allows you to add wireless rear speakers and sub for those of us that don’t want to run wires in walls. When it comes to music Sony provides 360 Spatial sound mapping which you can turn on and if available is a game changer, 360 spatial sound mapping is to audio what OLED was to screen’s is the only way I can describe it.Speaking of screens and viewing experience the AN1000 supports all the latest HDR quality standards for passthrough viewing. All of the standards (HDR10,Dobly Vision/HLG/IMAX enhanced) work and I appreciate the fact that they will scroll across the screen of the AN1000 so you know what your getting. I used this with the PS5 and all of the benefits were available (HDR, VRR, ALLM). There are 6 HDMI inputs in the back which can upconvert video being past through if needed and the addition of 8k helps make the receive future proof. Paired with my 65 inch OLED all images that passed through the Sony looked great with no screen tearing or any distortion. The Sony offers a bunch features which have it punching above its weight class, the addition of zone 2 and 3 makes the AN1000 a versatile product that can become the center of your home entertainment hub. While using the AN1000 the CEC function worked amazing and let me control everything through one remote.I only had 2 issues with the AN1000 one is the app, the app navigation is a bit clunky but im hoping this can be fixed with an update to be a bit more streamlined/easier to navigate. Second is when using the receiver as a passthrough sometimes the Sony AN1000 setting screen shows up overlaid over the streaming device content which is a bit cumbersome but not a deal breaker.Overall this is one of the best receivers I have ever used and would highly recommend it to everyone.

Once all your connections are made on the back of the receiver, the initial receiver set-up and calibration procedure is the easiest I’ve ever used from any manufacturer. I’ve been fortunate enough to own receivers from nearly all the major players in this field over the years and the new Sony interface, while almost generic looking, is simple and easy to master.A big portion of the easy set-up should be credited to Sony and their Digital Cinema Auto Calibration program. It is a very thorough calibration process. I strongly advise getting a laser distance measurer, as you will be asked to take many different measurements throughout your room. Nothing complicated, but it is slightly time consuming. The calibration program considers many different parameters, including seating position, distance, screen height, ceiling height, etc. Any one that has used the Audyssey or Dirac room calibration programs should be pleased with the results of the Sony proprietary calibration programming. After a series of measurements and test tones, including subs, phase matching, level matching, etc. the Digital Cinema Auto Calibration will complete, and the end results are impressive.SOUND QUALITYThis is my first Sony home theater receiver I’ve had in a long time and after initial use, it brings back old memories. My first test was using Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos encoded music from Amazon Music Unlimited. This receiver is just like the Sony receivers of old. While sound quality is always totally subjective, this receiver is no where near as warm sounding as my current receiver. I favor the warm, richer sounds of my current receiver for music playback, always have, that’s what led me to my current manufacturer. The Sony doesn’t sound bad, far from it. It just sounds more neutral, cooler, and in a sense, a little thinner. I listened to dozens of songs from all genres: country, rock, classic rock, rap, classical, etc. All exhibited the same trait. They sounded fine, just lacking that warmth and finesse my current receiver gives.Next up, is what you buy a home theater receiver for. Movies. The Sony Digital Cinema Auto Calibration was very comprehensive, so let’s see if the Sony can pull it off when it comes to an immersive home theater experience. Sony claims their technology can create a series of ā€œphantom speakersā€ giving the user a much more enveloping sound field like you get it a movie theater. First up was a 4k, Dolby Atmos encoded movie from Amazon Prime. It sounded OK, but it left me wanting. Bass was flat and the sound track while clear, was not convincing. Next up, Top Gun: Maverick on an Ultra HD Blu-ray in my Sony 4k Blu-Ray player. Same results. OK, but not impressive. This is exactly what I expected from an entry level receiver. Fiddling with some settings, I found the Movie button on the tiny Sony remote. This allows you to toggle between different sound modes, included in those are Dolby Mode and DTS:X Mode. Do these modes make a difference? Yes, a jaw dropping difference. The little Sony came alive and so did the movies. Bass hit hard, jets were screaming all around, the little Sony became a true cinematic machine. The movie was a blast to watch again.NEGATIVESThere is no getting around it. The remote sucks. It’s tiny, it’s hard to read, especially in a light controlled room, there is no tactile feedback with the buttons, they are all flat with no special humps, or bumps to let you know which button your finger is on and most importantly, it is not backlit. Ugh. I hate not having a backlit remote.Because this is an entry-level receiver, there are no Pre-Amp outputs to expand the system past 7.1 and for those interested, there is also no Phono Pre-Amp.The included stereo microphone for room calibration has too short of a cord. I sit 15’ from my screen and the included microphone is just too short. Luckily, I had a 10’ 3.5mm stereo headphone extension cable on hand so I could complete my room calibration. While the Sony advertises Sonos compatibility, it does not have Sonos ā€œbuilt-inā€. By compatible, it means that it works with a Sonos Port. The Port will turn the receiver on and off as well as selecting the correct input when you connect, but this receiver does not stream via the Sonos app without additional hardware.CONCLUSIONTo quote a boxing metaphor, the little Sony STR-AN1000 is a Featherweight hitting in the Welterweight class. Dollar for dollar, the Sony is bringing its A-Game to the table. There is just a lot to like about this little powerhouse. Vocals are colder than I like for music playback (this isn’t so much a negative, as a personal preference), but the Sony makes magic happen with movies. The sound is strong and enveloping. The Sony room calibration is precise and much better at speaker matching than Audyssey. Which, I found quite surprising as Audyssey is touted like it’s the gold standard. Whether it be movies or using multi-channel stereo playback of audio tracks, the sound from my speakers is much more cohesive, dynamic, and punchy than I could ever get it with my old receiver and Audyssey. Believe me I tried and tried. I tried automatic. I tried manual. I used an SPL meter. The Sony implementation and calibration is much better.Don’t let Sony’s odd-ball power rating of 165W x 1 sway you from the receiver (The sticker on the front of the receiver touts 165W x 7, but the Sony website is more accurate at 165W x 1. There is no way this receiver is 165W x 7). A majority of the power needed by speakers is for bass reproduction. Since most folks have a powered sub or two in their theaters, the lower power rating really isn’t a big issue. Coming from a receiver rated at 125W x 7, I didn’t notice any real power difference, as I use the low pass filter to let the subs do the heavy lifting, thereby freeing the receiver from power hungry bass chores. The little Sony never sounded strained or thin at higher volumes. At the end of the day, it all comes down to this. Does the Sony bring enough to the table to replace my existing receiver that is several years old and cost more than 2x the price of this one? The answer is: Yes. The Sony won me over watching movies on it. My home theater has never sounded better and more convincing.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The relatively light weight actually worried me, especially when I compared this device to the AVR it replaced from several years ago that was much heavier to lift.My fears turned out to be unfounded. My listening room is small, but the STR-AN1000 easily drove my Bowers & Wilkins 606 S2 Anniversary Edition front and center speakers to very loud levels and the presentation was clean, unrestrained and with absolutely no edginess. My listening room is small, but the STR-AN1000 easily drove my Bowers & Wilkins 606 S2 Anniversary Edition front and center speakers to very loud levels and the presentation was clean, unrestrained and with absolutely no edginess. My HSU subwoofer, of course, was self-powered and my vintage NHT surrounds absolutely came to life with their new power source. Since my main speakers present an 8-ohm load, I doubt they are getting the 100 watts per channel output that Sony specifies since the Sony spec is into a 6-ohm load. It did not matter, as I could not hear any strain or constraint when I drove my 8-ohm speakers. My surround set up is 5.1 and my current monitor is only 4K, but this Sony has me ready for 8K when I am able to make that addition to my equipment.Set up was straightforward. I had been advised to be prepared to make measurements at set up, and I was ready with an inexpensive laser measure which allowed quick confirmation of speaker placement with the calibration microphone. The instructions stated that the process might take a while, but it was completed in just a few minutes. The receiver takes you through a guided set-up of the process.I do have a couple of quibbles. The process for memorizing the frequencies for my local FM stations was counter-intuitive and took longer than I expected. Reception with the supplied wire antenna was just fine, once the stations were programmed.Unfortunately, the receiver does not have an input for a low-level source like a phono cartridge. You would either have to get your own pre-amp if you want to use a turntable, or you would have to have a Bluetooth turntable like Sony's PS-LX310BT, which I fortunately had. I had not used it for a while since my living room home theatre set up is not conducive to using a turntable. With the STR-AN1000, I was able to pair with the turntable in my personal listening room in seconds. Now if I could only find enough space for my old record albums in my newly-equipped lair! The remote is compact, but unlighted. The big blue HOME button helps direct traffic. Press it, and you will see a graphic to either WATCH video sources or LISTEN to audio only sources. After pressing WATCH, the remote allows me to navigate between the TV, my Blu-Ray Player and my Roku box. Press LISTEN, and I choose between FM radio, the turntable, or, for example, Spotify. There are six HDMI inputs and two of them are 8K ready. This receiver is compatible with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, IMAX enhanced, and dts:x. No, I have not tried them all. Suffice it to say, the Dolby surround experience is full and wonderful in my listening room. On my favorite movies, sound placement is precise and exciting. I am getting a better surround experience than my older equipment was capable of producing. And I have no complaints about the music presentation either. Rock, jazz, or classical, Sony handles them all with aplomb. One thing that has not changed for the better, and I don't single out Sony for this criticism, is that CEC over HDMI still is not mixed component friendly. If you have an all Sony set up, I am sure your Sony remote can turn all your components on with a press of the receiver's ON button, and vice-versa. I could not control my non-Sony components using the CEC feature. I was relegated to using the individual remotes for specific tasks that I wanted to perform with them. The STR-AN1000 is a handsome, practical, and versatile do-it-all AVR and I highly recommend it.

This compact and physically light receiver (just under 21 pounds out of the box) is specified to do virtually anything you might ask of a modern AV receiver. My HSU subwoofer, of course, was self-powered and my vintage NHT surrounds absolutely came to life with their new power source.

Great choice to build your HT setup around

There are speaker connections for up 7.2 channels, or 5.2.2 if you use height speakers for Dolby Atmos/DTS:X. I found the binding posts to be a little tight to work with: each channel’s L/R is vertically arranged, and I’ve found receivers that put them side to side a little easier to wire. I had to separate my wires a bit more in order to get them to properly reach. My system is a 5.1.2: JBL A190 towers on the front, JBL A125C center, Onkyo SKF-4800 towers for the rears, and SKH-410 height speakers. I am using a single SVS PB-1000 Pro subwoofer, but there are two subwoofer outputs. All of the speakers are 6 ohm.Setup is pretty easy via the ā€œeasy setupā€ option. The GUI is easy to read but is rather plain; most of it is simple black and white. The setup takes you through room measurements and height measurements for the speaker and TV and confirms your speaker arrangement before walking you through the calibration. The included microphone and plastic stand is very nice, and the microphone seems more sophisticated than ones I’ve used before. It goes through a series of test tones to calibrated levels and distances. Though the setup overall did very well, I did my own manual adjustments with regard to crossovers, and I tend to set all of my speakers to ā€œsmallā€ to force more low-frequency signals to the sub. The speakers were dialed in pretty quickly, but I had to play with the subwoofer configuration a bit to get it right. It’s still not quite perfect for music, but it’s fantastic for movies.Sound decoding is generous and covers just about everything you’d want, including a full array of Dolby and DTS formats including Atmos and DTS:X, along with some Sony proprietary sound enhancements like center channel raise and speaker relocation. I did run into one quirk though: the Disney+ app on my Sony X900F TV would only send 2.0 LPCM output to the receiver. I didn’t have this problem with my previous receiver, and there was no combination of settings between the TV and receiver that would get it to output 5.1. If I used my PS5, there was no issue. All of my other built-in apps–Vudu, HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount–all worked just fine. This is a fantastic receiver for movies. This definitely seems to drive my speakers with more power than my previous receiver, although it’s somewhat hard to discern the exact power ratings for my particular arrangement. My go-to films for testing were amazing: the opening battle scene of ā€˜Master and Commander,’ where the cannon fire was absolutely thunderous. Next, I went to the ā€˜War of the Worlds’ scene where the tripod emerges from the city street, which is an excellent demo for low-frequency punch, and the Sony provided a seat-shaking experience. Then I tried the finale from ā€˜V for Vendetta’ where the explosion of Parliament was the best I’ve ever heard it. Finally, the battle above Coruscant from ā€˜Revenge of the Sith’ provided my final test, with plenty of lively effects through the sound field. Overall, for films, this can handle cinematic bombast with aplomb. It was no slouch for music, either. I watched Elton John’s ā€œOne Night Onlyā€ concert DVD, which I’ve seen many times, and was impressed with its performance, with a very full sound stage and plenty of nice details coming through clearly. For streaming music there’s also a variety of platforms supported like Chromecast, Spotify Connect, and AirPlay. While soundbars have definitely made a dent in the traditional home theater setup for many people, for those who want true cinematic thunder, there’s no escaping physics: bigger speakers simply do better. And for those who want that experience, a good A/V receiver is at the heart of a home setup, and the Sony STR-AN1000 is an excellent choice to build around.

Great receiver for home theater

I've had this receiver for a couple of weeks and it is just awesome. Sony has done a great job going through everything that I've used. My setup is in a basement 'entertainment area' and has Atmos 5.1.2, Polk Audio recessed speakers, LG C1 OLED and Sony 800 Ultra BD player. (There are also many other devices hooked up but not modern 4k/audio drivers)The initial setup is easy and intuitive. It comes with the setup microphone that did an amazingly accurate job of placement of speakers and distance from prime listening position (I double checked it's measurements and it was dead on). After setup it did make a difference to my ear in clarity when sitting in the area I had setup the mic.Just before setup I wired the internet to it and it only took about 5 minutes to update to the latest firmware. The onscreen menus are well laid out and easy to maneuver. The ability to hide unused inputs is very nice also.Built in Chromecast and Spotify is convenient but also for me just a triplicate of smart TV and Roku. The biggest thing for me was the Atmos system. It really was everything I was hoping for in a home theater. It's clear and amazing how much the overhead speakers add to the movie experience. I was also surprised how nice the 360 audio sounds compared to standard stereo. It truly does make is seem like you're at a venue. The bluetooth streaming works great. It's clear and quick and makes it convenient to control sound from anywhere. I never setup or used the multiple zones but it says it has zone 2 and 3 so you can run multiple rooms audio from this receiver. The other nice thing I ran into was that it has component video inputs built in so I can easily hook up things like a VCR and Wii without having to have converters.Overall I am loving having this receiver. Quick setup, great sound and more power than I'll ever need. I'm very happy with this setup and I'm hoping it will last me a very long time.

That's the bad thing about receivers: they can sound amazing as the day you got them for years since amplifier and speaker technology haven't made dramatic advancements over the years but it's things like audio/video formats that have. The STR-AN1000 is capable of up to:-7.2 speaker setup-5.2.2 speaker setup for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X (height speakers)-5.2 wireless speaker setup (cannot add height speakers, so no Dolby Atmos when wireless speakers are used)They're compatible with Sony’s SA-RS3S & SA-RS5 wireless rear speakers and SA-SW3 & SASW5 wireless subwoofers. There are 6 HDMI inputs, but only 2 with HDMI 2.1 support, which is responsible for 8K, variable refresh rate, auto low latency mode, and reliable 4k 120Hz with HDR. So it's not exactly future-proof. I learned that the hard way when I had a receiver that had only 2 inputs with HDMI 2.0 and the other 4 were HDMI 1.4. But HDR quickly became mainstream and my receiver quickly became obsolete as I had more HDR-capable devices than I had inputs. So consider that. There are 2 HDMI outputs which allows a multi-zone setup. Also in the rear you'll find an FM antenna input, a coaxial input, 3 composite inputs, a Toslink/optical input, an, an Ethernet port, 2 wifi antennas, and a IR remote in and out ports.I've tried to make use of the IR Remote in port but never got it to work, even when using an IR repeater with an external power source. The speaker connections can be done by screw (with the standard attached red/black knobs, not actual screws) or by banana plug. Impedance is 6-16Ī©.On the front panel there is a 1/4" headphone out jack, and a USB port (5V, 1A) which you can plug in USB storage to play audio media with the receiver's USB file explorer. It's not capable of playing video from USB storage. There is a 1/8" calibration mic port. There are also glaring omissions:-There is no front HDMI input. I miss this DEARLY as it is a pain to get to the back of my receiver given how heavy the receiver is and not a lot of arm room or light in my home theater stand shelf. I would use this to plug in my laptop, gaming devices that I don't use full time, and digital cameras.-There is no phono input. So if you plug in a turntable you won't be able to hear the sound as it'll be a whisper. You'll need to purchase a separate phono preamp for it.-No AM antenna input. So no AM radio.-No component video input. The STR-AN1000 sound just as amazing as my previous receiver it replaces with my 5.1 setup. But keep in mind a receiver alone won't work miracles if you don't have decent speakers. It's like having an expensive graphics card for a computer but a cheap monitor with bad viewing angles and low resolution. The graphics card can't help your monitor's deficiencies. And the STR-AN1000 can't help a bad set of speakers sound great. With my speaker setup, it was plenty loud for regular listening with the volume at 23 (out of a max of 74). At max volume, the sound was still clear and clean.Calibration was easy. The included calibration mic comes with a plastic stand, which is a whole lot better than the paper stands I've been used to with Audyssey calibration.Movies sound *incredible* with the STR-AN1000 from just 5.1 sound alone. Again, you need a decent set of speakers to unlock the receiver's potential. The rear speakers have clear presence.Unfortunately I didn't have a source with IMAX audio to test that. I also don'tThere is a 360 Spatial Sound Mapping (360SSM) feature expands a stereo sound signal to use all your speakers and output them in a way that sounds immersive but in many cases unrealistic. Like, when I'm watching baseball, when it switches to show the announcers in the play-by-play booth, their voices are coming from all over my speakers when they should just be in front of me. It's great for music though, and if you want that encompassing immersive sound. Be aware though, this mode is nothing like 360 Reality Audio, which offers actual discrete sound spacing. It's terrible for movies because it has no regard for realistic spacing. But 360SSM isn't supported when in Dolby or DTS mode which is what you'll typically use for movies anyway. There is a 3 month free trial coupon to a single service that offers 360 Reality Audio, with the most well known services being Amazon Music and Tidal.Spotify, YouTube Music, and Apple Music do NOT support Sony's 360 Reality Audio.I opted for Tidal with my free trial since they offer master quality audio with their service, along with 360 Reality Audio, and Dolby Atmos audio. Now THIS is where the 360 audio magic happens. I listened to both of Dua Lipa's studio albums in the 360 Reality Audio-encoded format on Tidal and they sound *amazing* particularly because you can hear the audio clearly spaced out by location. The singing is in front of me. Certain instruments to the left. Others to the right. Specific echo effects coming in from the rear. It's like surround sound with movies, but for music. The sound placement effects sound mastered with intent instead of just having sound all around you like the 360 Spatial Sound Mapping. Thanks to the 360 Reality Audio's sound spacing I'm able to hear more detail then in songs that I never heard before because they get muddled within the layers of sound in the traditional stereo format. Here's the problem: 360 Reality Audio is behind a paywall of the service's highest tier. There is no standalone offline file format for 360 Reality Audio. They're tied to specific streaming services. And there is a VERY limited catalog of 360 Reality Audio-encoded music. So it may definitively not be for you if none of your favorite artists or music are even produced in 360 Reality Audio. When my trial is up, I won't resume my subscription because there is way too little of the music I like available for it, especially with hip hop.The STR-AN1000 supports Spotify, and the 360 Reality Audio provider services- Amazon Music, nugs.net, and TIDAL but not natively. You need a device with its app to cast to the receiver to make use of the aforementioned services. It also supports Chromecast audio as well as bluetooth audio. As far as terrestrial radio goes, it only supports FM radio. It allows up to 30 presets, all of which you can rename manually. It's unable to pull radio station names from the internet despite being connected to the internet. The default names are FM 1, FM 2, and so on.Tuning to a radio station is a nightmare because you can't speed through the station numbers. When you hold down the button to find a station it will automatically stop at each and every station it finds, so you have to press and hold the button again and again until you get to the station you want. The remote itself is pretty horrible. Its line of sight is terrible with a seemingly low angle range for its IR sensor. I had to purchase an IR repeater for the first time ever so I'm able to use the remote outside of its sensor's limited range. Even then, the my IR repeater wouldn't work when I plugged it into the STR-AN1000's IR in port as per the manual. My IR repeater uses an external power source since I anticipated the receiver's IR port being passive (not active like cable set top boxes). Using an external power source still did no good. So in the end, I used the old fashioned, stick an IR emitter in front of the IR sensor method to repeat the IR signal. The problems with the remote don't end there. Volume control is also terrible. If you hold down volume up or down to quickly change volume, it will initially change the volume from 7 to 14 steps (it's inconsistent when held down) then STOP. Then resume changing the volume until you let go of the button. Why did Sony have the remote stop in the MIDDLE of changing the volume while the button is held down? It's so stupid and annoying! Because of this, sometimes I find it quicker to either rapidly tap on the volume up/down button to change the volume, or go to the volume dial in front of the receiver to quickly change the volume.Another annoying thing about this unit is that it runs warmer (at times hot) than any receiver I've ever owned, even while it's turned "off" (on standby)! And generated heat means electricity usage. And this is with a 6" height clearance in my home theater stand. You'll definitely need the clearance because if you don't, considering how warm it gets, you may end up damaging it over time without proper ventilation. As good as the STR-AN1000 sounds, it's not competitively priced for what it's lacking. My old receiver sounded just as great with a lot of the same features, such a Chromecast audio, and some that the STR-AN1000 is missing like phono, and a front HDMI aux input for nearly half the price. It just didn't have the HDMI 2.1 support. Unless you're sold on Sony's 360 spatial sound mapping and their 360 Reality Audio format, you're better off with another receiver that has the features that the STR-AN1000 has AND lacks while still sounding just as good.

Scared my kitty with the rain

I wish Sony provided more feedback on how to position the rear speakers, but a little online searching helped provide optimal placement. For those wondering, there is a difference for when you're doing a 5.1 vs a 7.1 setup. After a quick run through with the automatic room analyzer, it was off to watch some test videos. One of the Dolby tests had a rain storm going through the room. It sounded so real and immersive that my little kitty freaked out, thinking it was raining inside the house. Switching over to movies was just as amazing. On my previous receiver, I always had issues hearing the vocal track, but on this one everything was balanced perfectly. Audio from all channels came through crystal clear and I don't need subtitles to understand the dialog anymore. Considering that my listening spot is a good 14 ft from the front audio, that's really impressive. On a side note, I really commend Sony for their packaging strategy. There were no plastic baggies and all the padding was made from formed cardboard, so everything made it into the recycle bin when the receiver was setup. All in all, this is a great upgrade for your surround sound system, especially if you haven't invested in wired surround speakers yet and want to go wireless.

After I figured it out it works perfectly. As a bonus the day after I purchased my receiver it went on sale and I saved another $50.00 off which BB promptly gave me a credit on my purchase. So far I am enjoying my new receiver. I updated all my speakers to Logan Morton and I am loving the upgrade. So if you are on the fence about buying this receiver just try it out. You can always return it if you don’t like it and go with another brand.

The best sound system I've had so far

While I also own the Sony SA-CS9 subwoofer, I did not use it for testing.I’ve watched a number of movies supporting a wide variety of audio formats of which I have yet to see the AN1000 fail to play properly. The sound quality is incredibly clean and precise with no real EQ tweaking needed to get crisp clean sound out of the speakers.I’ve listened to a number of musical formats with various streaming services and found the Sony to be lacking nowhere in terms of sound reproduction with everything sounding precise as the original recording,The AN1000 supports a feature that I personally haven’t come across before on an A/V receiver. It has the ability to pair Bluetooth (headphones, earbuds, etc.) to it and when enabled and connected, you can have your own private listening mode, with the volume turned up even more if you want. When Bluetooth is configured in this mode, it disables the speakers automatically. The 360 Spatial sound mapping was fairly easy to configure with the included microphone and stand. The calibration process was straightforward and mainly requires you to pick your speaker configuration before it runs. I feel that there was a noticeable difference after running this calibration for 360 spatial sound and enabling it. It adds a new depth to not just music, but to movies as well.Overall, there is nothing to complain about with the Sony STR-AN1000 as it’s a extremely capable current and next gen AV receiver, supporting practically all major formats and even 8k@60Hz video. I was looking to upgrade from my older receiver and this was just right for me. I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it sounds and performs.

I absolutely love the Sony STR-AN1000. I was using a 5.1 setup in my living room and this unit has allowed me to expand to 7.1 (going to add the second subwoofer soon) by adding surround back speakers. Just the addition of these two back speakers has definitely added an additional dimension!Out of the box, and the unit is sleek with 2 knobs, several buttons, a headphone jack, calibration mic jack, and a usb port. I use wireless speakers for my surround and wired speakers for my front and center channels. I basically followed the diagram in the manual for a general 7.1 setup. When everything was ready, I did what the directions said and tried to move any obstacles in the line of sight between any speakers and the microphone. I went through the auto-calibration steps and was ready to go! It really is a painless process!I am basically using this unit as a hub for all sound in my living space. Our TV, gaming console, cable box, dvd player, and cd player are all routed through it. I am very happy that it has an FM tuner as I love to listen to radio at home sometimes. For the first test, I put in Star Wars Revenge of the Sith. The fight scene at the beginning is full of sound layered thoroughout in the background. At first, it did not sound spectacular until I pushed the movie button on the remote control and WOW, I was blown away. It was like watching the movie for the first time! The sound was incredible. I could feel the battle all around me. I was definitely impressed. For music, I like to use the 3D spatial mapping! It immerses you in the music and you feel it all around you. For gaming, my son loves to use the surround sound when playing with his PSVR he says it makes the games so much more enjoyable when the sound is so immersive.I highly recommend this unit to anyone. It is affordable and the amount of technology built within is impressive. Bravo to Sony!
