Budget Receiver that Evolved into a 2.1 then 2.2

With all of these different functions it delivers amazing stereo sound quality.I know that it is rated as a 2.0 system, but with a couple subwoofers and some speaker wire splicing it now functions as a 2.1 or 2.2 system beautifully. It is rated to 100 watts and I would have to say that it delivers, all though I don't crank it up that high normally. For a budget receiver, it's really nice. I'll point out a few things I like about this receiver. One, it has built-in bluetooth. I can easily pair it with my iPhone and stream music. It also has plenty of inputs, including an 1/8" PORTABLE IN mini jack on the front that allows you to make an easy wired connection to your phone or computer. That saves you from having to get a flashlight and reach behind the receiver to make the connection. It's a nice convenience option. The remote is excellent too. Great inexpensive 2 channel, networked receiver
20 May 2023

Simple 2 channel HiFi that has network capability seem to be disappearing slowly. The rise of big screen tv, flat panels and surround sound, multi-channel audio have relegated the simpler act of listening to music to a back seat. This Sony unit is an exception and a great implementation for music lovers. Song has a sound signature and EQ that I find more pleasing, realistic and sonically accurate than Sonos, Bose, Marantz, Denon or Apple. Yamaha is reasonably close to Sony in this regard but this 2 channel unit recently replaced a similar Yamaha equipped Musicast device and I am very pleased.Great volume, pleasing sound and ease of use is best in class in my opinion. Can’t beat the price. Very pleased with the performance of this unit.

Recently set up a home stereo system.Receiver: Sony STR-DH190Turntable: Audio-Technica AT-LP120XTB-USB-CRCD Player: Onkyo C-7030Speakers: Klipsch Synergy F-300I used the direct out from the receiver into a Vizio SB3851-CO surround sound system to use the subwoofer to pick up any lows the Klipsch speakers missed. All I can say is wow! This system sounds incredible. I'm not a techie but I did my research when purchasing these components. I can definitely tell a difference in sound quality, volume and dynamics. This receiver paired with a quality turntable and cd player brings out nuances that I've never heard. I can't speak to the longevity of this device but so far I'm more than satisfied. If you're on the fence, don't be. This device is worth every penny.

Improvements over my Sony STR-DH130
10 July 2023

I bought a Sony STR-DH130 sometime around 2012 or 2013 and have been using it every day. It's served me well, but lately it was showing sides of aging, most notably they when I would press the "display" button on the front of the unit it would randomly perform other functions, such as increasing the treble by one or changing the input source. Even though it worked fine with the remote, I figured I'd get ahead of the eventual failure and replace it.My setup is pretty simple- cable box, PS4 and Blu-ray player all fed into a 50-inch TV via HDMI, with sound coming out of the TV via a 3.5mm to RCA cable into the receiver, then the speaker output going into a Polk PSW108 subwoofer which then feeds into a pair of Klipsch R-51M bookshelf speakers. It's a setup which has served me well, so I decided to stick with a 2.0 channel receiver again. This receiver has a few upgrades over the STR-DH130. First, power is a little better, 100 x 2 versus 90 x 2. Second, the addition of Bluetooth is a nice feature and works well with my iPhone. Third, the phono input is not something I plan to use but it's good to know it's there if I ever change my mind. Finally, the "portable in" input on the front is a nice touch, it's something I always felt was lacking on the STR-DH130.Setup took about 15 minutes- the hardest part was running the power cord behind my entertainment center. A detachable cord would have been easier, the cord on this unit is hard-wired. Once that problem was solved, connecting the speakers and the audio input was simple, Sound quality is nice, no different than with the STR-DH130, but that's fine as I was happy with the sound quality on that unit,So why not 5 stars? A few small things that I personally feel could have been better. First, I know that this is a 2.0 unit, not 2.1, but I really wish there was a subwoofer out. There were no 2.1 units at my local Best Buy, and it looks like there are not any available to order at this time, which forces you to go with a 5.1 or 7.1 unit if you want that subwoofer out. Second, the delay from when you turn this unit on until the sound comes on is a lot longer than the STR-DH130- it's about 10 seconds versus 5 on the old unit. It's just long enough to make you wonder if the receiver is on before it clicks, and you hear the sound. Third, there are no EQ adjustments other than basic bass and treble. This is the same as the STR-DH130, but it seems that over time Sony would have added some EQ settings. Fourth, the FM antenna is a small wire with a proprietary connector, even though I rarely listen to FM radio I tested it and only got a couple of stations. Finally, some of the features (like balance) are hidden in the AMP menu, which is not easy to navigate. These are minor issues which may or may not matter to you. For my purposes it's a very nice unit which sounds good and has a few new upgrades since the last time I purchased a basic Sony 2.0 channel receiver, and I am very satisfied with it!

Just Like The Old Daze But This Plays My Phone Too

I had a Kenwood receiver from the 1970s and a pair of Rectilinear Mini 3 speakers that I lost in a house fire last year. This was the closest I could find in performance to that at a reasoable price. It accepts Bluetooth input and has a remote. I mated it to a pair of Sony bookshelf speakers. The speakers are a bit smaller but they sound great. I can hear the bass just fine and I didn't need to feel the base so no sub woofer. I just wanted an old school stereo. I ran my TV RCA output to the stereo so I can have enhanced sound when I want. If you want fancy surround then get a home theater receiver but I got this out of box for $120 and it had only been removed from the box and then put back in. Everything works and not a scratch was on it. The FM antenna is a bit ... MoreI had a Kenwood receiver from the 1970s and a pair of Rectilinear Mini 3 speakers that I lost in a house fire last year. You can get more features with the China brands but this looks great with my TV and it looks, feels and performs quality. There is phono input and a couple of auxillary inputs. It runs two sets of speakers switchable A, B, or A and B. It has a line out so you could run a powered sub woofer I guess but not sure how the L R channels would merge to do that. I would have liked a mid range tone control but the bass and treble adjusted for my ears.

Easy exchange at BB and the replacement has been working fine. The FM antenna is a simple wire w/ a proprietary plug. Doesn't seem to be any way to hook up a dipole or something better. In summary, other than the inconvenience of exchanging a non-functional unit, this Sony is a good amp for the price, especially if you only need the basics.

Not great for me
22 November 2022

I originally had purchased this and ended up returning it within a week. My unit may have been faulty though.Seems like Sony cheaped out with the power supply on these and reviews online mention it being a common failure point. When turning my unit on, it would hum very audibly (louder than my gaming pc at idle running Cooler Master SickleFlow 120s), and you would also feel the vibration when touching the unit. The volume control knob was quite difficult to turn, I wasn't expecting the feel of a nice Denon unit, but I expect it to not have a significant amount of resistance, the input control knob wasn't too much different. Despite this, my unit didn't appear damaged. It gets worse though, I had bought this to replace a Legrand amplifier which was faulty and had ... MoreI originally had purchased this and ended up returning it within a week. Even with that issue, my speakers sounded worse with the Sony, just horribly muddy, no highs or lows, just mids; they're not fancy either, just 8ohm 40w ones (the Parts Express Overnight Sensations DIY kit). There's a similarly priced Yamaha that should be better, though I went for an Onkyo TX-SR393 instead and have been extremely happy with it, all issues I had with this Sony are non-existent with that, even providing an accurate frequency response.
