4K player works when buyers pay attention to details

The Sony 4K player has real problems with any discs that have been touched by hands on the active surface. Any fingerprint will stop the 3rd bluray layer from playing. This is why so many people rate the device as "poor performance" when you get to 1 hour 45 min of play time. HOWEVER, if you religiously clean your 4K discs and handle with clean hands only by the edges, then you can get the system to work flawlessly. Another problem is unit overheating. Be sure to elevate the unit off the surface and DO NOT put it on top of another electronic device that generates heat (like an audio amplifier). I used 3/4 inch nuts to gain a half inch off of my bookcase. That also made the unit to stop doing the "freeze" that so many people see. As good as this 4K bluray player is it's likely the last model from Sony that'll really put out the sorta quality people expect from them. Pretty much as long as the main frame & build of this video player remains as it is the quality can also be expected, but once they start making them as small & compact as possible (like with their current regular bluray players) then the quality, more specifically the longevity, will take a considerable nosedive. I know many who have the current design bluray players from Sony (the frame & build are all the same, it's just certain features crank up the price) and it's always one of two things. Either they use it only every so often and so it lasts a good while or their using it daily or every other day in which case they don't ... MoreAs good as this 4K bluray player is it's likely the last model from Sony that'll really put out the sorta quality people expect from them. Either they use it only every so often and so it lasts a good while or their using it daily or every other day in which case they don't usually last more than a year and a half to two years absolute max. Meanwhile Sony first started making this model and overall frame design in January 2018 and most everyone I know who has one, even from 3 years ago, still says it works flawlessly, both those who constantly use it and those who only use it every so often. That little bit of observation tells me a lot about the current quality and durability being put out by Sony. Obviously their putting a solid effort into making good video players IF you're getting the latest and greatest. Similarly you'll only get mediocre quality from an older format of video players from them. So the only question for people at the moment is, do YOU see enough personally in the 4K bluray video library to want to invest? If not, well, this review isn't for you admittedly, but if so, here's your best option. Perhaps a bit pricey at $250, but it's better to spend a bit extra for one that'll last years rather than have to buy a new one every couple of years. Also, most quality, name brand 4K HDMI cables pair well with this to get the signal you want and expect. Just get this if you want the best out there. Simple as that.

What this unit is all about is the fantastic picture quality that really upscales your older DVDs & brings them back to life again & put in a 4k blue-ray disc, and wow !!! to get the best out of the player use a good quality HDMI lead that can handle 4k plus I think it would be better matched with a modern 4k tv & soundbar as well to get the best out of the picture soundespecially if you watch a lot of movies, I have a 2020 4k LG OLED.

My unit suffers from image hang-up
16 April 2023

I bought this unit based on good online reviews as part of an upgrade of my existing HD home theater projector system to 4k. I think I made a bad choice because the picture freezes up completely half-way through the 4k films. I presume it might be the disc transition, but this normally just holds for a second or two. But mine lockes up completely which ruins the film. I need to re-start and scene select past the hold point. One time the player shut down completely by itself mid-film.The firmware/software is up-to-date, so at the moment I'm running through various discs to see it the issue remains. If it does, it'll be going back under guarantee. The interface does have Netflix, but what good is one streaming app? I purchased The Sony UPBX700 from Richer Sounds at Romford. I’ve pretty much always used the Romford branch for close on 20 years. They’re always helpful and professional with advice and recommendations or even the odd alternative product suggestions. Just nice guys… As for the Sony, it’s looks are different..: much smaller with a radical shape… I would say if you’re looking to save space in a set up .. it’s gotta be considered. Build quality is a little light… but not fragile..: as for sound quality? SOUND! 5.1 off Netflix !!!
5 January 2023

I get it that some my find it 'small and plastic-ie . . . But this is one of my best machines! I bought it for 4K and region-free playback, which it is wonderful. What l didn't realize was how great its audio capabilities are. It has a coaxel digital out-put that connects easily to my (slightly older but very) high-end surround sound system, which sounds fantastic. What makes it 10 stars for me is that when l click to Netflix and Amazon Prime it becomes a 5.1 reciever! If l get Netflix etc. off another reciever or optical cable from my tv, the sound is ok, but does not have the presence or depth. Of course the source - movie/tv show has to be good to start with, but wow!!! Worth every penny!!!

I thought I'd treat myself to nice DVD player, so I spent the extra money to get this one. This is the second Sony DVD player that let me down. Played 2 DVD's in it over a 4 month span. Says I need to update software, but won't let me select the software update. Now I have to unplug it and plug it back in just to eject. It won't play the DVD either. Both my TV and DVD player are Sony (Don't get me started with the TV). At one time (many years ago) it was a good brand. Luckily I have a Samsung DVD player that never lets me down. Made the mistake of selling my smaller Samsung TV when I got the Sony TV. I've had the best luck with Samsung. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A SONY PRODUCT! Three strikes.

But it isnt high-end or even mid-level. It is small, plasticky, given to the usual spastic whirr, whirr, click, click, whirr dithering which characterises the abominable disc handling we have come to expect these days. I had a Technics CD player in the 80s which would have embarrassed this device. Drawer came out instantly, soundlessly and was ready to play the disc in milliseconds and even with your ear on the casing you could hardly hear the mechanism spinning the disc. Picture is fine, but DVDs are disappointing, soft, muddy, low res (and they arent on our Marantz blu ray player); Blu ray performance is good-to-very-good, without being superb; You get what you pay for and this wasnt expensive, doesnt make any special claims and now days youd have to spend double ... MoreBut it isnt high-end or even mid-level. Recommended? Not particularly. Itll do, but we see little evidence of trickle-down - this is no better than it needs to be (although none of the alternatives are, either). If you are serious, spend more, but dont imagine you can do this on the cheap - most of these players feel like they fell out of a Christmas cracker.

Upscales regular DVDs to near 4K UHD quality
18 February 2022

Like many people, we have hundreds of DVDs. Should we spend thousands of dollars replacing them with 4K UHD blu-rays? (Then what will we do when they come out with 132K UUHHDD quadruple blu-ray disks?) It never ends as technology is always improving. No, we're not going to continue to spend money on the same things over and over again. So, we bought this Sony unit hoping for the best. Believe it or not, this 4K UHD blu-ray player upscales older DVDs to near 4K UHD quality just as it claims. Couldn't tell you how the tech and algorithms work, but they do. Just watched Alien from 1979. The picture was smooth, not granulated, totally watchable and enjoyable. (The alien was as creepy and ugly as ever.) This Sony blu-ray unit just saved us thousands of dollars. We ... MoreLike many people, we have hundreds of DVDs. Should we spend thousands of dollars replacing them with 4K UHD blu-rays? No, we're not going to continue to spend money on the same things over and over again. So, we bought this Sony unit hoping for the best. Believe it or not, this 4K UHD blu-ray player upscales older DVDs to near 4K UHD quality just as it claims. Couldn't tell you how the tech and algorithms work, but they do. Just watched Alien from 1979. The picture was smooth, not granulated, totally watchable and enjoyable. (The alien was as creepy and ugly as ever.) This Sony blu-ray unit just saved us thousands of dollars. We haven't touched the other features of this unit yet because saving our DVD collection was the first priority here. Well done Sony.

Works great!

Based on what I had to spend in the past to get a HD blu-ray player that was actually responsive and that didn't take years to boot, load a disc, and navigate between pages in menus, I thought this unit from Sony would at least work, but I expected it to be laggy and slow for this price. I just wanted something "now" to use with my brand new 4K tv and the few 4K discs I was picking up. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly this thing boots (and it has a fast boot mode that's even faster!), and even more happy with how quickly it loads discs and navigates through the menus.I was also pleasantly surprised at how quiet it is. Based on how small and light this thing is I was worried it would make lots of machine noise or have a resonant vibration when spinning discs, but it's much, much quieter than the cheap Sony blu-ray player it replaced. I can hear it moving the laser at times when searching, but for the most part I find the thing near whisper quiet, at least from my viewing position which is about 7 feet away from the unitBeyond that, I'm getting all the HDMI perks from this thing that HDMI 2.1 (current highest spec at time of writing) offers (with the correct cables). I'm not going to talk about image and sound quality because if these digital devices work and send stable signal that's all you can really say. Just make sure your cable meets the same HDMI spec as the other devices in your setup. The conversion back to analog happens in your TV and/or amp, not in this unit. It does have upsampling capability built in but I leave that off and just let my Sony Bravia handle that. I must say I'm very pleased with how this unit meshes with a Sony TV remote. I really don't need the remote that came with this unit, and that's a good thing, because if I had any complaints with this unit it would be the tiny, lackluster, outdated looking remote control. But I can just leave that in a drawer and use the remote for my TV, which makes me happy.Only other complain I could make about this thing is the UI. It's ugly as sin and looks like it was designed in 2001... Not at all a seamless experience between that and switching to a smart TV interface... But as I only see this for a few seconds before loading a disc, or not at all, I really don't care. It's a purely aesthetic thing that you don't need to look at much at all so I'm fine with it.Overall, this thing rocks and exceeded my expectations for the price. If you want something with more slick aesthetics you'll have to pay more, but for me this is a sweet spot between price and functionality. It looks decent enough sitting on my shelf with the minimal black design and does everything I expected it to do and more for a reasonable price.
