Received my Sony VPL-XW5000 projector on free next day delivery from Richer Sounds of Chester and out of the box settings are amazing. Upscaling of 1080p HD sources is probably second to none. 4K sources result in almost 3D like pictures popping from the screen. Black levels are excellent and colours seem very natural even without any tweaking. Once installed the projector is very easy to set up, using the manual focus, zoom and vertical and horizontal offsets and warm up time is about 50 seconds. The WX5000 is the entry level laser light source projector and uses the same processor that is in their flagship projector priced at an eye watering £85000. This entry level laser projector does not cater for 3D film sources as my previous Sony lamp based projector did, but other than that I have nothing negative to say about the new WX5000. if thjis is in your budget then go for it as there is nothing to compare to it at this price point. Kudos to Richer Sounds staff for their assistance and prompt service as well as their 6 year warranty.

The good: Pretty much everything. I wrestled with what to get for my home theater. No regrets with the Sony - easy setup, great clarity and more brightness than I need. At the default 50% brightness setting, brights are already eye-searing in my light controlled room with a white screen. It's very quiet though still audible in quiet sequences. Much quieter than the Epson it replaced fortunately! The meh: It takes a good 20-30 seconds to start up.The bad: There's no HDMI CEC. This is an annoyingly small thing that frustrates me. Turning the projector on is painless but turning it off is incredibly frustrating... Turning the projector on is painless but turning it off is incredibly frustrating... It will only turn off when projecting something and only projects when your system is on or telling you your system is off and the latter takes time to wake up the unit with a short period before it sleeps again. The IR receiver doesn't see over my head and requires the remove to be held up high (ceiling mounted) to receive anything. The shutdown sequence can be stopped but you're not notified - you just need to sit and watch it. It shouldn't be hard but, in the past two weeks, I've turned it off and on then off again many times. Non-issue on every other HDMI device I've bought in the last decade but somehow just not functionality included on the projector. Would be 5-stars with CEC integration to my otherwise seamless system.
I had been looking to upgrade my HD projector to a 4K one and had been holding back for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I couldn’t find anything as quiet as the JVC D-ILA projector I had which was whisper quiet, secondly I wanted a laser projector with a native UHD panel, and thirdly one which wasn’t too heavy so that I could reuse the existing projector ceiling mount.I had my eye on this projector for some time due to the good reviews, and it fitted the bill regarding being native 4K and was laser illuminated. Although the quoted noise level was a few dB higher than my old JVC it was quieter than other options. When I saw Richer Sounds offering £1,000 off for a marked box I decided to bite the bullet and buy one.The projector has proved capable of producing some excellent images, and overall I’m very happy with what I’ve got for the money paid. I’m projecting onto a 77” screen in a darkened room, and as expected the images are bright and vibrant. Initially I found the fan noise to be intrusive as the projector is mounted directly above me, however I’ve reduced the laser output to minimum which still provides a good level of brightness, and reduces the fan noise to a more acceptable level for me. When playing an HDR disk the laser output increases to ’50’, and the fan noise sometimes increases depending on content, but this haven’t proved to be a problem. The subjective white and black uniformity across the screen is excellent, as is the focus which is sharp to the corners. The registration is very good, although I did shift the red horizontally a little to optimise this.Motion handling is superb, and I haven’t been aware of any noticeable artefacts.I found that the projector is unable to produce a decent black, even with the laser brightness, and overall brightness setting set to minimum. In the darkened room a totally black image produces a visible dark grey raster. (Changing between standard and enhanced HDMI format doesn’t help). Regarding setting the HDMI format I found that the setting is global rather than per preset like most of the functions. This was confirmed to be the case by Sony. I think the old D-ILA projector was better in this respect.Regarding the colorimetry I felt the red to my eyes was not a pure red, and was airing towards orange, although not enough to have a major impact on my enjoyment. On a final point, I turned the ‘Network Management’ option to ON, even though I don’t currently have a network connection. which halves the time for the projector to produce the image. A small point but one I felt was worthwhile. There is a very small (negligible) increase in standby power consumption doing this.
Fantastic projector. Had for about two months now.Replacing a Sony 1080P projector and the color and black levels are beyond expectations. I saw a review where the author talked about Lumens and how they not always equal between manufacturers. This may be only 2000 Lumens but it is more than bright enough for my 120" screen in a 14' x 16' media room. I love that if my kids leave the projector running I don't even think about how many lamp hours I'm burning. If I had to complain about anything it would be.....1) Sony is using the same remote control as the last four or five versions. 2) It takes a few minutes to power up, but when it does it's at full brightness from the start. 3) I'm using a screen with a very thin bezel, and the manual adjust was kind of a drag. I’ve had my Sony XW5000ES for 2 weeks now. After watching plenty of content both streaming and disc & comparing with my old Sony HW40ES, I’m very happy with this new projector. 4K content looks fantastic. Upscaled by the 5000, HD content looks amazing. It's a major improvement over my old projector. Black level, accurate detailed color, and overall picture quality all look fantastic. To really appreciate what this projector is capable of you will want to consider a 4K UHD disc player. Blacks are much darker than my previous projector, but the bright highlights and rich color? WOW!! That’s where the 5000 clearly shines. Another thing I really appreciate about the 5000 is how it handles gradients. My old projector had only 8-bit color depth which looked great 90% of the time until a scene came along with lots of gradients and then the 8-bit color-depth limitation reared its ugly head showing gradient-banding. Ahh, but the XW5000 gradients are as smooth as butter.HDR content is handled very well on the 5000. I’m quite relieved about that after hearing stories saying HDR looks too dark on projectors. I’m continually impressed how well the 5000 pushes plenty of light where the image calls for it while remaining dark in the same frame for the dark areas of the frame.Sony’s image-processing and its solid consistent “out of the box” calibration are why many people choose Sony projectors. You can select any of the pre-calibrated setting buttons to your liking and your set to go. I prefer “Reference” in my pitch black theater room, but if you have a little ambient light, you might prefer the Cine-Bright button for a bright calibrated image. For those of us who like to dial in the picture even further, Sony has you covered. All the familiar Sony menu settings are here with a few extras that give you plenty of room to make adjustments.Performance:After careful examination, I did not find any focus issues or streaking issues. The sharpness and clarity look great. Using test patterns and white movie titles on black background. Small-print end-credits look sharp and consistent across the screen with excellent black-level and crisp white text. The big selling point will be the laser light engine. This means no more lamp replacements for the life of the projector. That's big! The OEM replacement lamps are expensive and lose brightness fairly quickly. The XW5000 laser light engine is rated at 20,000 hours which may outlive the projector itself. If you watched 1 movie every day, the light-engine would last 27 years. Yikes! I’ll be ready to upgrade long before then :)================PROS:* True Native 4K* Tight sharp image with good black level.* Sony’s “X1 Ultimate Processor for Projectors”* Excellent and consistent “Out of the box calibration”* Brilliant specular highlights* Rich full 10bit color* Impressive HDR for a projector.* Laser light engine means no more lamps.* Smaller shell compared to last year's model.==================CONS:* Fan-Noise.Louder than expected compared to the whisper of my old Sony VPL-HW40ES.Noise Level is not terrible, just noticeably louder. You can reduce fan noise by lowering the laser light output level to 50 with very little loss of light but a big drop in fan-noise. I personally set the laser where I want it and I’m already not noticing the fan when watching movies. I should also point out that my old 40ES kicked out some serious heat, but putting your hand near the exhaust of the 5000 is lukewarm at the most.* No 3D at all on the XW5000.I'm sad about that since I have a dozen 3D movies. But I understand Sony had to cut it to reach this price point. If 3D is a deal breaker for you, then you need to jump up to the XW6000.* Manual lens (focus, shift, zoom). For me it's no big deal. “Set it and forget it” and it's exactly the same as my HW40ES and I’m perfectly happy with the manual lens. Cut from the list to reach this price point.=====================Sony’s cost cutting measures on the 5000 make total sense in my opinion and were absolutely the right call. The 5000 is the most affordable premium native 4K laser projector on the market today. Upgrading to the XW6000 at double the cost of the 5000 gets you a motorized-lens, a better lens, 3-D option, and an extra 500 lumens of brightness.====================Conclusion:The Sony VPL-XW5000ES is an excellent projector at an attractive price point. I suspect the 5000 will be very successful for Sony and I look forward to future models at this level from Sony. The attached screenshots are intended to show how the XW5000 handles some challenging images.
Spectacular true 4k image. Its absolutely stunning when you have the right source material (like Eugene Belskys 8k60fps HDR videos on YouTube.) The image can be too dark which may be remedied with a screen. The remote is junk. It is too large, too many functions and despite having an ES receiver, I cant control everything from a single remote. Ceiling mounting was also an issue because Sony chose 3 vs 4 mount points. Yet its all worth it for the spectacular image.-Customer Review From Sony.com
To highlight the best this projector can do you must watch 4k blue ray discs and pacific rim is amazing. Streaming 4k is good also. Gaming takes a little to get used to but is good. I have a 65 inch lg oled and have not used it since I hooked up this projector. Is it better than oled. No way but if you want a big screen experience this one is bright and the colors are very good. I thought my 1080p Epson was good this is a big step up for sure. My only grip is the poor quality of the housing itself. But once installed do you really notice the body of the projector anyways.
This, my fourth Sony projector, hits it out of the ballpark. Amazing picture, amazing. I replaced my recently acquired 525es with this beauty and I'm amazed at the picture quality. This projector is an improvement over my 525es by about 35%. Well worth the money. I think that at this price point Sony is just giving this projector away to once and for all capture the mid-level home projector market. Hands down, you couldn't possibly do better. This unit is quiet and it is cool, something that was a major point of concern with my 525es. The 525 used to run hot because of the demand on the lamp. Well, we have a laser engine here. The 5000ES is about half the weight of the 525ES. Easy to set up, easy. There isn't too much calibrating to be done here. This is an ... So, all you need to do is tweek those levels to your liking. The only thing that I found to be better with the 525ES is the size of the picture. Given the exact same room and conditions, the 525ES produced a larger picture by about 10%.The bottom line, run, don't walk.
