Always hard to objectively review headphones

I'm happy to comment on build quality but each individual's perception of sound is different and personal so I will simply say that, for the money, they sound OK for what I use them which is listening to movies when the rest of the house is asleep. I wouldn't listen to music via bluetooth no matter what I also think "sound cancelling" whatever the brand, is a misnomer, especially when listening outdoors. Still, that's just me. I'm concerned the re chargeable battery is sealed inside the unit and does not appear "easy" to swap out. Indeed, this really is something I should have though more about before making my purchase because I bought these 'phones because my Bose "on ear" bluetooth 'phones failed (after 8 years) and it's proven impossible to change the battery ... MoreI'm happy to comment on build quality but each individual's perception of sound is different and personal so I will simply say that, for the money, they sound OK for what I use them which is listening to movies when the rest of the house is asleep. Indeed, this really is something I should have though more about before making my purchase because I bought these 'phones because my Bose "on ear" bluetooth 'phones failed (after 8 years) and it's proven impossible to change the battery (they still work fine when wired so I will be keeping them). Had I been alert enough to spot this beforehand I would not have bought these hadphones full stop. That said, I got them via Amazon Warehouse so about £50 less than "new" so can't complain too much. To me they sound reasonable but I have compromised in the sense the need for new arose at a bad time. When I tell you my AV sound kit is about £10K's worth you'll perhaps understand that £180 on a pair of headphones is skimping a little. I wouldn't say don't buy these, (except pehaps for the batter issue) but I wouldn't say buy them either whereas I would say don't buy "Beats" or any other gimmicky, payong for the label brand.

Amazing headphones!!

I brought these headphones on 22/05 and they came the next day! I didn’t pay any more for faster delivery and still got an incredibly fast delivery which I am really satisfied with! The headphones themselves are really good, they have great noise cancelling which honestly caught me off guard at first. I expected good noise cancelling but it was beyond that, I personally enjoy the noise cancelling feature especially since I have sensory problems so to overcome this these headphones are perfect. They are also super comfortable and light, which I am also very satisfied with because I plan on wearing them throughout most of my day so I wouldn’t want anything making my head ache and weighing me down and these don’t do either. The audio quality itself is also perfect, there is no annoying buzz noise when you have the volume low/paused and the audio is clear and not muffled even when the noise cancelling feature is on. I also appreciate the range of controls and customisation that there is in the Sony headphones app, I love that I can change the features around it makes it feel much more personalised. Overall, these headphones are just impeccable in my eyes and I have no faults with them. I am not a headphone expert but these are my favourite headphones that I’ve ever had and I definitely recommend them to anybody looking for good quality noise cancelling headphones.

Excellent at first but they don't last

Like many others, I only write reviews when I am very happy with a product or extremely unhappy, sadly this is the latter. I purchased my WH-1000XM4 having read numerous reviews on how good the WH-1000XM4 are. Undeniably the sound quality and noise cancellation are superb. I mainly use the headphones in the office, commuting and on long haul travel, the WH-1000XM4 were ideal for this. So why the one-star review when other reviews rave about these headphones, and they win so many awards? Simple, they don't last. All the reviews and comparisons are with new headphones. After about a year and a half (outside the warranty period) the headphones developed a fault, they wouldn't reliably charge, the battery level would get stuck at 10% and when plugged in to charge the ... MoreLike many others, I only write reviews when I am very happy with a product or extremely unhappy, sadly this is the latter. After about a year and a half (outside the warranty period) the headphones developed a fault, they wouldn't reliably charge, the battery level would get stuck at 10% and when plugged in to charge the charging wouldn't activate. After a few months of struggling with this I decided to get them repaired at Sony. Having sent them in I was informed that the part required to correct this problem wasn't available, however, I could purchase a replacement pair at a discount, which I did. I have since discovered that the charging issue is a common problem, a quick internet search for "Sony WH-1000MX4 Not Charging" will bring up numerous blogs and articles describing exactly the same issue, generally after about 15 to 18 months, there are various button pressing resets that are suggested and these work for a while. But this is a fundamental flaw. For a "premium" product the components are just not adequate, and Sony does not appear to be able to source replacements. I would strongly urge anyone considering purchasing these to research how many of the glowing reviewers are still happy with the WH-1000XM4 after 18 months. If the discounted replacement pair worked, I wouldn't have written this review either but sadly after six months and very little use, this pair stopped working. Having been informed by Sony Customer Support that the replacement pair came with a 12-month warranty I wasn't too concerned. However, the Sony Customer Support have been nothing short of utterly woeful in resolving this. I have never had such a poor response from a major brand. I've purchased numerous Sony products over the past 30 years, from Walkmans, TVs, stereos and probably every model of Playstation and I have never once needed to contact customer support. After my recent experience with Sony Customer Support, the WH-1000XM4 will be my last purchase from Sony.

Perfect for ADHD and noise sensitivity!

I bought these headphones about 2 weeks ago after researching which headphones to get for months. I have been an AirPod user since they came out, but found they weren't giving me what I needed in terms of noise cancelling features and sound quality. I would say the AirPods are easier to control (e.g. skipping a track or going to previous track) but the XM4s are absolutely brilliant for my noise sensitivity in public. I find it so much easier to concentrate with these headphones on (even if they are not playing any music). They have the option to let you hear what's going on around you, and automatically change to allow you to hear speech when they detect it. I have found that I am also listening to music at a lower volume with the XM4s than I did with AirPods. I used to have my music at maximum volume through AirPods, but I only have it halfway up with these headphones. I would say that these are not the best option if you are going to be using headphones for Zoom / Teams meetings regularly - I prefer my AirPods for such meetings.Overall, the sound quality is amazing, the noise cancelling is amazing if you have ADHD but like to get work done in a coffee shop or if you have noise sensitivity issues. These are perfect for Uni students and I see plenty XM4s around the Uni library! They are also cute if you want a pair of headphones that won't ruin your outfit. The noise cancelling feature is so good that you can't hear yourself sigh in the library when trying to write your dissertation! I gave 4/5 stars just because I think these aren't the best for taking virtual meetings with.

Review of SONY WH-1000XM4 Wireless Bluetooth Noise-Cancelling Headphones - Blue

I was recommend these headphones by a friend who's used them for about a year. I was looking to move to over ear headphones as standard in ear headphones, as much as the quality was good, were not good for my tinnitus...I was lucky enough to be able to try them, through my friend, before I bought. And I was genuinely impressed, I ordered a pair the same day, the price was a little daunting to some, but I saw it as an investment... After I got used to the features that come with the app, and used the headphones themselves, it was clear I'd made a good choice 👌 Listening to music, either on a walk or just to chill, no longer left me with the aching ringing ear, so already exactly the sort of thing I was looking for, but more, the sound quality is superb, genuinely ... MoreI was recommend these headphones by a friend who's used them for about a year. They also connect to my smart TV, which for gaming is ideal, and the way the sound transfers from TV/PC speaker to headset is night and day, particularly for "emersion" games. I'm still playing with the equaliser options, but the standard option is perfect all around for what I like, if you know more about how EQ works then me, I'm sure you'll have fun playing with the custom options in the app. Anyway, rant over 😅 these are a brilliant pair of headphones well worth the money for what you get, and knowing its a Sony product gives a guarantee that they'll last a good while, and pay for themselves in the long run. 10/10 would/have recommend/ed.

Solid Headphones - spotty connectivity

For a summary up front, these are a good product at a premium price point. There are some things I really like about these, but there are a few issues I have with them as well.Sound Quality: Very good. I'm not an audiophile so won't try and assess this in detail, but they sound great to my ears.Comfort and Fit: They fit me well, and are comfortable for extended periods, they do tend to get a but stuffy and sweaty after a while, but I think that is going to be true for any closed back headphones.Noice Cancelling: These are a huge upgrade over my last set of headphones. While they do not cancel out all noise they reduce a busy city or office to a background murmur or tune a noisy computer fan out entirely.Transparency Mode: Maybe this is a me thing, but I ... MoreFor a summary up front, these are a good product at a premium price point. There are some things I really like about these, but there are a few issues I have with them as well.Sound Quality: Very good. While they do not cancel out all noise they reduce a busy city or office to a background murmur or tune a noisy computer fan out entirely.Transparency Mode: Maybe this is a me thing, but I struggle to follow a conversation in transparency mode, and the speak to enable it is more of a nuisance than a help. All of this means that I basically never use the feature. Unless you know that you like the XM4's implementation of this feature, don't treat it as a selling point. Now for the couple of points that bug me a little about them.Buttons/Touch controls. The buttons they have work great, and it makes me wish that it had buttons instead of the touch pad. I still often accidentally trigger the wrong function when using them (i.e. accidentally skipping when intending to change volume). It also often gets triggered inadvertently a lot whenever I am reaching up to access a top shelf, or hang out laundry. All this makes me wish for the simpler days of just having buttons.Connectivity: This is the other part of the product that I find lacking. I came to this from a aggressively mid-range set of BT headphones, which had better range and connection quality than these - even when they are set to prioritize connection strength over audio quality. In the city I get frequent stuttering and cutouts when in certain areas that clearly have high wireless traffic. Around the house I sometimes get cut outs where the audio will completely stop working for a minute if I walk a little bit too far away, even when the source device still thinks it is connected.Wired option: they have a wired option, which I consider bare minimum, but I wish the wired option also allowed you to use the media controls and microphone (many cheap sets of wired earbuds provide this level of functionality so was very surprised that these didn't). With how poor the connection can be I often revert to this mode and wish it was as functional as the wireless mode.On the whole, I am a little disappointed by the connection issues and the lack of features when using them wired, but otherwise very happy with them.

Warm, lush, stirring - all the right stuff

I’d read plenty of rave reviews on the Sony WH1000 XM4s, so once the price has been reduced to the arrival of the XM5s, I thought I’d better get in there before stock ran out!In short, these headphones are stunning. Sound-wise, they aren’t what you call strictly ‘accurate’ - the sound is quite V-shaped, with a boost in treble and bass - but Sony have developed their default EQ setting to somehow make everything sound fabulous. It’s pretty much impossible not to be impressed. Classical, reggae, metal, pop, jazz - these headphones excel with everything. It sounds cliched, but I am hearing detail in music that I’d never heard before. You can make EQ changes if you like, and also included is something called DSEE which is supposed to enhance the sound even more, but ... MoreI’d read plenty of rave reviews on the Sony WH1000 XM4s, so once the price has been reduced to the arrival of the XM5s, I thought I’d better get in there before stock ran out!In short, these headphones are stunning. It sounds cliched, but I am hearing detail in music that I’d never heard before. You can make EQ changes if you like, and also included is something called DSEE which is supposed to enhance the sound even more, but I’ve seen no need to use either of these functions. The active noise cancelling is very impressive, with heavy traffic passing me from the pavement being reduced to a whisper. They are comfortable too, although at this price I would’ve liked real leather covered ear pads (my wired Sennheiser Momentum 2s has these, at a similar price point). In appearance, the headphones are premium in finish, but are not showy at all. On the black model at least, there’s rose-gold accenting which sounds horrible, but actually looks really nice. The headphones work without an app, although it’s recommended that you download it as it works really nicely. It gives you access to loads of clever functions such as the headphones knowing whether you’re at work or home, sitting about or walking - and then adjusting the noise cancellation settings accordingly. Every time the headphones make an adjustment in this regard, a tone sounds, but you can turn this off as it can getting a bit annoying - particularly on windy situations. The app even wants to take photos of your ears to make further adjustments to the sound to make it as personal as possible! Another nice touch is that the headphones willpause automatically when you take them off your head. The good:•Stunning sound•Great app•Stunning sound•Lots of clever features and customisation•Stunning sound•Premium finish… oh, and the sound is stunning! The bad:•No IP rating (not waterproof or sweatproof, so keep them out of the rain, and avoid using them for exercise)•Leather ear pads would’ve been nice•Very short charging cableIn conclusion, if you can afford £250 to spend on headphones, get these. I have no hesitation in giving them the highest rating overall in terms of sound, functionality and presentation
