I’ve now had mine for over 5 weeks and it has been delightful. It is used every day with my IER Z1R, sound is awesome and battery life is by far the longest compared to another other Android DAP! I currently get over 30 hours with moderate screen on time.I haven’t had any of the issues as the 1 star reviewer, mine has never lagged out or crashes. Perhaps he got a faulty unit…If you’re thinking about buying one do it! You will not regret it.

Lol).

Good Sound - Terrible Value - Quiet Output (EU)
21 July 2022

To get the elephant in the room out of the way first - this machine exists in two forms, and is not the same worldwide. If you purchase this in Europe you will receive a system with a significantly neutered power output, as compared with that available in North America and Asia. This limitation is set in firmware at the factory and there is no known way to subvert this currently. The result of this is that the system will struggle to drive inefficient headphones and IEMs.Unfortunately when this was first initially advertised for preorder in Europe they did not inform customers of this limitation, and the specifications as advertised at the time indicate the presence of a high gain mode and improved power output via the 4.4mm Jack. This is visible on the ... MoreTo get the elephant in the room out of the way first - this machine exists in two forms, and is not the same worldwide. This is visible on the internet archive mirror of the specifications page on Sony.co.uk dated the 12th April 2022.The website has been updated to reflect the neutered specification and impossible to compare JEITA output values. I find this change borderline deceitful especially given that I had preordered this device expecting the earlier advertised specification with High Gain and 250MW @ 16Ohms.The result of this is a player that has a great sound but is so terribly restricted in the equipment one can enjoy it with.I strongly suspect that Sony only tested the European firmware with their own MDR-Z1R and IER-Z1R. These products can be driven to an adequate level with this player but with little to no overhead after the fact.Comparatively inefficient planar magnetic headphones like Dan Clark Audio's Aeon RT and the Fostex T60RP are not sufficiently driven to an adequate level. As such I cannot recommend this player for these and other headphones like them.I'm disappointed in this product's performance given the poor power output and absence of high gain mode yet again in Europe for another of Sony's high end walkman players. The player itself is larger than the NW507 and runs a more recent version of the Android operating system (Android 11 vs Android 9) - the 507 is more pocketable than the 1AM2. but the 1AM2 feels more solid in the hand.Absent of this gross restriction this would be a 5* review with a recommendation to others to purchase - but given the increased cost over the NW507 and the same asthmatic performance for the European model I am compelled to rate this lower than my rating for that product. I cannot honestly believe the European model is the embodiment of the vision of the designers. If you are in Asia or North America - I would have no issue recommending this product at least for evaluation, in Europe; please avoid until Sony rectify this obvious hobbling. The European model is a poor value for money - and has little going in it's favour as compared to competitor's models at a similar price point.

Great Product
16 July 2022

I always wanted the WM1 but was disappointed it didn't run android and couldn't play streaming music. I settled for the ZX507 and it's good but batter life sucks, the screen is small, and was adequate but never mind blowing. I long said that if the WM1 and ZX507 merged and had an offspring, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. This new updated WM1AM2 is exactly that and it's awesome - so far, the quality is top notch, great battery life, and a great music player with better quality sound than my iPhone. I prefer this when I want to disconnect from my phone, notifications, and emails (work). I'd recommend this for those interested or on the fence. It's better than you hope.

Great sound...
15 August 2022

I've had the WM1AM2 for a couple of weeks, really enjoying the sound quality vs using my Samsung Fold 3 for music playback. I use Tidal, SoundCloud, and my own digital library of music on the WM1AM2 and I can hear more details from my Audio Quest NightOwl, Shure 535 IEM, Bowers Wilkins PX7, and Mark Levinson No. 5909. The only negative is the Android 11 OS is not the quickest on the WM1AM2 which can be frustrating when moving around the screens. I hope a firmware update will fix. This is the only reason I did not give the WM1AM2 5 Stars.

Great streaming player in a phone-sized package
12 October 2022

I chose the Sony NW-WM1AM2 Walkman because I was looking for a streaming player that could play digital music downloads (which comprise maybe 80% of my music purchases lately) from cloud-attached storage, and handle high-resolution formats like DSD and MQA. The NW-WM1AM2 does this with aplomb. Being able to stream my digital downloads from the cloud is a godsend; no more laboriously loading music files onto MicroSD cards, all of my music stays on my Synology NAS. I should mention that the NW-WM1AM2 supports MicroSD as well (handy for when you want to listen to music in places where you can't get an Internet connection. NW-WM1AM2 presents the music in a way that is both involving and inviting, no matter what the format or genre. The NW-WM1AM2 gets the most out of high-resolution music streaming services like Tidal; listening to Arcade Fire's "We" in MQA format is addictive. If the NW-WM1AM2 has a downside, it's that it's an Android device, with a full suite of Google apps; you'll have to disable all notifications from email and the calendar to keep them from intruding on your music playback. I never thought I'd still be listening to music on a Sony Walkman in 2022, but I'm happy to be listening to music on this one.

I really enjoy this DAP. Stunning sound quality. The OS is quite good but the music is where you be looking. I like the music player. It organizes your music well and allows you yo search and find your files in a number of ways. Get good head phones to get best of it.

Although there is an initial firmware update, which I have downloaded, oh my, has Sony got some work to do! It feels like bad beta software. Laggy. Crashes often. But the volume cap (that, by the way, doesn't seem to affect Son'y's competitors)? I'm assuming that's not fixable.

What I was looking for
29 January 2023

Just what I was looking for. A former iPod user who wanted to get back into having a dedicated music playing device that I can take with me or hook up to a stereo system. I am loading it up with apple lossless files, and plan to have this as the holder for my music collection from here on out. It feels like the build is solid metal... very nice.
