A rad little camera

I rented this as a try-before-I-Buy kind of thing, and I ended up really digging it. The stills and autofocus is great, as is the 10 fps shooting, and the video holds up really well. The audio is surprisingly good as well; good enough to not *need* an external mic. The fact that it comfortably fits in a cargo pocket with the little dead cat attached really forgives a lot of the ergonomic issues inherent to a camera so small. My use case was hiking around Nevada with a bunch of larger gear, and using the ZV-1 as a vlogger/point and shoot.I have two main complaints about this camera:1) Sony colors make me look like a tomato. A dedicated switch would probably have been worth the real estate. I did notice that in stills mode, you could hit the record button and it would start taking video with whatever stills settings you had. It didn't work the other way around though, and being able to snap off a quick still frame while still in video mode would have been pretty handy.

It's a nice companion camera for film shooters that want to take some digital snaps as well without looking like all the other smartphone shooters out there (and there really is something to being discrete). For Sony mirrorless shooters, the workflow and controls will be familiar. It's a little touchy to zoom to a precise full frame equivalent (like 35mm for street), but that Carl Zeiss lens is well-matched to this 20 mpx sensor. While I only shoot RAW, it should render JPGs with the latest Sony color science improvements that have been updated on their recent mirrorless systems. As a RAW shooter, I relish the option to do my normal post-processing workflow and apply my style and editing as if it were shot on a full frame mirrorless kit.As I do not use this for vlogging or really care about its video, check out other reviews for that. For me, it's a camera, Period. And when walking in Chicago, I wouldn't cry as much if this one were stolen as I would with any full frame kit or even any film camera I own. But it's so small that it should not attract much attention, and that is precisely what makes this camera so good.Sure, be prepared to charge your battery or have a spare. Be prepared for tiny buttons and no viewfinder. Yet for first-time camera buyers coming from a smartphone, this would be a great option. Composing shots with the view screen is familiar to digital natives, and there's something to be said for keeping your eye on the subject and not through the lens.

Fatal drawbacks
17 November 2022

***PROS:*** 1.) The F/1.8 is great. It's bright. 2.) The zoom is solid. 3.)The size and weight for the specs are light and small. 4.) Sony stabilization is good. 5.) Phase-detect auto focus is excellent. 6.) Screen is quality. ***CONS:*** 1.) Skin tones are inconsistent and specifically come across pink. 2.) Auto ND doesn't work half the time. Manual ND isn't dark enough. 3.) The widest angle isn't wide enough for vlogging (unless you like shaky video). 4. The battery is small. 5.) The battery door is blocked when using a selfie-stick or tripod, so you can't easily swap the battery or change SD card. 6.) The results are amazing, however a few things that are annoying that I think are noteworthy:1. Battery life for full time vlogging is approx. 3hrs. Given that this camera is marketed as THE vlogging camera, it’s a real shame to have to purchase more batteries just to take full advantage of the camera.2. Although not a huge issue, the display isn’t a touch screen. So if that’s what you want, perhaps look at a different camera.3. It splits film recording into 5 minute clips instead of saving as one shot. What I love about the camera!1. Great focus and very quick2. Skin smoothing feature is nice if you’re having an off day3. Significant Audio Problems
8 August 2022

I read many glowing reviews of this camera, and by the spec sheets it is ideal for my purposes. However, I had major audio problems, that turn out to be described by others online (eg YouTube). The first version I purchased the internal microphone was extremely quiet, even at the highest level of camera amplification (31). With an external microphone attached (Rode videomic pro) it was great, but after using it, the internal microphone was almost inaudible (even set at 31 level). Unusable for vlogging purposes. B/H was very helpful and I got an exchange. With the exchanged version, again on the internal mic, the audio was quiet and levels would vary noticeably while recording, as if it were adjusting levels on the fly in a particularly bad way. Needless to say, this made for erratic audio Again B/H was very helpful. As I poked around on the internet, I found others with similar issues, though the main reviews were absolutely glowing. Frustrating, as the feature set is ideal, and there is no real equivalent camera out there at the price. Perhaps this is an issue with a subset of cameras, and I was just unlucky.

Terrible. Low light is unusable and looks over exposed and grainy.Color accuracy... either the sky is white or this camera sucks. There's minor adjustments you can make, but it takes a long time to adjust and has next to no smart features - this camera is almost 100% manual usage for adjustments. There's no preset or automation on it, focusing struggles all the time in all setting. If you use studio lights of any sort (LED's), the refresh rate cannot be adjusted to avoid lines on a screen. In adjusting the refresh rate.Battery Life- maybe 15 minutes when recording. You cannot plug it in and use it forever - 1) it'll overheat in 5 minutes - 2) the batter still drains even when plugged in and recording. Eventually you have to sit and wait for a while to recharge it if you do not have a spare. So if you read this far and still want this camera - buy like 15 $40 batteries - you will need every single one... also a portable freezer to cool it off would be good.Picture quality as a camera is horrendous. it really struggles to focus. All photos came out fuzzy/blurry when not using a tripod - shutter adjustments did nothing.PLEASE NOTE - This is my 3rd ZV-1 I've tested - the first two had the EXACT same issue - I was assured by Sony that it was just a bad device... it is not. This is a $750 paper weight that turns on and off.

Too small to handle, cell phones are almost as good.
20 January 2023

This camera takes nice pictures, and is everything the various reviewers on the internet say (good pictures, videos, etc). For me, it was not what I wanted. The buttons and knobs are way too small, and my fingers are way too big to manipulate the thing. It is a very small camera, and is so light that it feels like a toy. On a tripod, it won't shake, but in my hands it has no heft at all and shakes too much. The menu system is tedious, especially with the tiny buttons. But the good part is that there is a huge amount of help available on the net, due to the popularity of the camera. I bought an aftermarket grip and it is a lifesaver. Made by Aodelan. It helps with adding a little mass to the whole thing, and if you get this camera get the grip, without a doubt. You need to be careful using this thing. The lens extends about an inch and a half when engaged, and if you accidently have the camera facing down, the motor will try and push the lens out and make the camera do a pushup. I am sure this will damage the lens motor, so watch out! The picture quality is a little better than my cell phone. It can take pictures in moderate lighting, but it gets grainy. I mostly use cameras for tracking myself dancing tango with a partner, and for food photography. I have a Samsung NX10,which became obsolete. And I have a Canon G7. I am not sure that this Sony camera is any better than my old G7. But it is more modern. I think I would have been better off spending the money on lighting and continue using the G7. But the Sony camera is a good product, if you can deal with the tiny controls. Realistically, a good cell phone is about the same as this camera. I think the next step up from a good cell phone is probably a full frame camera with a good lens.

We Use 2 of These for Wedding Video. Exceptional Quality Video and Sound!
14 March 2023

Even though we do have full size mirrorless Sony A7IVs, we choose to use the ZV-1 for our wedding videos. The video quality is like watching Netflix, and the sound is amazing even using yhe onboard mics. Smaller and lighter weight than the larger cameras makes the ZV-1 much more portable. The tilt-swivel screen acurately shows what is recording, and it's a very easy camera to use. The only downsides to this camera is the battery life and the location of he battery door. You can not change the battery while the camera is mounted on a tripod-monopod shoe. To solve the problem we bought Smallrig cages and we can now change the battery while the camera is mounted. We recently switched to a dummy battery hooked up to a power pack and no longer need to change batteries. ... MoreEven though we do have full size mirrorless Sony A7IVs, we choose to use the ZV-1 for our wedding videos. The photos from this camera are decent, but the video is superb!

ZV-1 A inconspicuous Vlog
8 September 2022

f you want to get into Vlogging outdoors- in a public space, you can’t go past the amazing little Sony ZV-1. This Sony camera has big video and still picture features all packed into a small, lightweight body, perfect for carrying it around with you all day long. Which is often required when vlogging alone.Another benefit of the ZV-1 is due to it’s small size, I’ve noticed you draw very little attention in the street, which is great for for your personal safety! The features I truly adore in this amazing little camera are the outstanding video quality and the ZV-1’s accurate focusing system, combined with a fast apature Lens, offering a sharp professional image, with plenty of bokeh! When vlogging, you never have to worry about focusing or creating lots Bokeh ... Moref you want to get into Vlogging outdoors- in a public space, you can’t go past the amazing little Sony ZV-1.
