This camera is overall amazing. 4K60 (4K120 coming soon) and many other features of the FX3 in a body that's barely over $2000. However, don't try to make this camera something it isn't. It won't be the end all be all for professional video work, as it's body is made of plastic, probably isn't as highly weather sealed as more expensive bodies, and it does overheat after recording for some time in high resolutions (physics always wins). In 70 degrees of shade with no breeze, you should see about 30 minutes of recording in 4K60 before the camera shuts down. With hotter temps, you'll see less, but if there is a breeze, you may see quite a bit more. This camera is made for those recording shorter clips at a time, not for wedding videographers or those doing long ... MoreThis camera is overall amazing. 4K60 (4K120 coming soon) and many other features of the FX3 in a body that's barely over $2000. The on board mic is great if you don't want to have to worry about carrying an external one, and the stabilization is incredible, although does come with somewhat of a crop for the best stabilization modes. Overall, I'm very happy with this camera, and if you're a content creator or someone who records shorter clips like B-Roll or highlights, this would be a great addition to your camera lineup.

I wrote a review a few days ago that there aren't any heat issues. Finally had one. I was 30 mins into filming 3 mins clips at 4k 30fps 10 bit and it overheated and shut down.I waited a minute and it was all good and asked if I wanted it used "higher temps" before thermal shutdown. Ok. Dunno if that will help.I still think, even with that, it's a phenomenal camera. I'm not a pro and just watching some how to's, the results are world class. As I mentioned. If it's in the budget, this is a really great camera to learn and produce amazing content.

I am sorry I had to return this camera because of overheating issues which made the camera unusable. The specs are great and so it's the image quality but I could not use it more than 10 minutes because it would shut down. I have tried different formats, resolutions and frame rates and it did not work properly. It shut down also just by scrolling through the menu for 10 minutes. It might have a been a defective production but that was my experience.I'm a professional videomaker and tested the camera either for vlogging and on a professional shoot and didn't have any luck. The design is nice and compact and very portable and probably that is one of the causes for overheating. The menu is still too complicated and dispersive. It would be a lovely camera if it ... MoreI am sorry I had to return this camera because of overheating issues which made the camera unusable. This vlog-focused camera perfectly suits my needs. Perfect use for basic vlogging while having the features/specs to do more. It’s AI autofocus and Cinevlog feature made it a breeze to capture awesome looking videos. I don’t recommend this camera if you plan to do more than basic vlogging. Even though it offers features of higher end Sony cameras, extensive use would more than likely cause it to overheat. I would recommend to do extensive research before choosing this camera.
I was genuinely excited for this camera. Nice big pixels, great video quality, compact size. Sure i can deal with sonys awful menus if the end result requires less massaging in post. Well, i got the camera, charged it, got everything setup and ready. Then i took it to a shoot, where it promptly overheated in just over 10 minutes, then shut down, and would not turn on for another 30. The shoot was in a 69 degree controlled environment and not even sunlight. So i figure its just a defective unit, maybe the heat sink paste was misapplied. Then i googled the issue and found tons of reports on the same issue and the cameras only been released a couple weeks. I returned it for a lumix 5sii... saved some money, got better controls and menus, oh, and i can shoot for more ... MoreI was genuinely excited for this camera. I would love to give this 5 stars and I would have if it weren't for the over heating issue. The AI auto focus is amazing and supper sticky, the video quality and colors are fantastic and it's incredibly easy to use. Just that darn over heating kills it for me. I tested it in 4k60, highest bitrate, highest heat setting, in direct sun and it was only 74 degrees that day here in Los Angeles and it only lasted 9 minutes before it shut off. When I initially opened the box and started adjusting the setting on and off just messing around it showed a heat warning after 2 hours, I didn't even record anything. At that time I had not yet put the heat sensitivity on high but that was definitely a precursor to the outdoor test. I could only really see this as an indoor studio ... MoreI would love to give this 5 stars and I would have if it weren't for the over heating issue. I could only really see this as an indoor studio option or for very short outdoors clips if you live in a generally cold city. Otherwise it's a great camera. Some day down the line I can see me getting one used as a b roll camera but not as main shooter option.
It's worth noting how this camera is meant to be used: this is my b-cam to my FX3. I have already taken this camera on several trip and family outings and have never had it overheat. I shoot short intervals of 24fps. This is not meant to be a studio or wedding camera--although I'm sure you could rig it up so you could. I believe the camera got overhyped and tbe rebound of that was a lot of unwarranted hate (from people who don't own this camera). I love it and am thankful to have it. Here is my initial review is linked below:
IPhone video is awesome. Moving to a p&s or aps-c camera didn't really make enough of a difference. This is just right to be worth the move. This isn't for film makers on a big budget. This is for creatives and folks that want full frame investment and quality in an easy to use package that CAN do 4k in low light that is pro-quality.With this, I can start buying quality full frame lenses and use them now and later for top quality video. I can record in 4k and zoom the final for my edits. And, I have.Just a week with the camera, and it's stunning. It's an FX3 sensor with all the cool AI stuff that a solo creator needs. And half the price!I shot in dynamic stabilization in a karaoke room on cinelog and the results were absolutely pro-level - all handheld on ... MoreIPhone video is awesome. And half the price!I shot in dynamic stabilization in a karaoke room on cinelog and the results were absolutely pro-level - all handheld on auto mode. (I shot a lot of video. Not all was great but the more I figured out how it worked, the better I got... cinelog looks amazing-enough and it's wysiwyg)Frankly. If you've ever wanted to go full frame and you have the budget and you work "alone" a lot - this is amazing!I've seen a lot of concern on heat. No issues here on 85f evenings. And if you are shooting in direct sunlight - who's gonna want to watch that anyway? Really... anyhow. At night and sunset, it's flawless. Indoors, too. I did try 60fps 10-bit but the file sizes are insane. That stopped soon after I realized I'd need a bigger hard drive to store All of that mess... Using this camera for "real projects" vs a stress test - it's awesome.I've also played with sLog and that looks fun. Someday. But, it's there as I learn. And meanwhile, this shoots amazing crisp autofocus shots with beautiful blurred backgrounds with handheld dynamic stabilization. This also has the latest, cool "stuff" and it's full frame. Do it. With a good lens. Highly recommend the Sony 20mm f1.8 as the first lens for it.
I was on the fence of ordering this thing, so glad I did. My client had a big company meeting, I ordered this in hopes that it would arrive on-time. It did. The portability and epic low light shooting was a game changer for collecting b-roll at the event. I actually really like the kit lens, but I was also using a wide lens that I use on my other Sony. The stability is really great, it does crop when using the stability, but the quality is still there.Other notes: I didn't have time to mess with shooting in SLog3. I just threw it in auto and went to town.
Ok so I'm coming from the A7s3 and the biggest improvement that I'm LOVING is the autofocus. It does not miss! Even when I'm on a final and I'm orbiting around a subject it can detect the shape of a human body. It's incredibly accurate and relatable. I love the white color. I get compliments everyday on it. Also just the smaller weight makes it a breeze I. The gimbal!I've personally run into ZERO overheating issues so I don't know what the buzz is. Also the onboard mic sounds great for fun run and gun content. Honestly a great camera. No regrets!
