The images of soles cracking - Sperry has hollowed out the soles below the foot bed, where you can't see (but you'll eventually feel it alright). The sole appears a certain thickness from the outside, but if you feel around inside, along the edge in the toe box and around the heel, you'll find the sole is about half as thick. Call it cheapening the sole to squeeze a bit more money out of the gullible customer. The sole around the outside being a different thickness easily cracks off. There are also edges present inside where they've done this, between where they've dug out the sole and its original thickness. They glue a bit of leather over this transition to soften it, but you'll compact that down through simply wearing the shoe. According to my doctor, unknowingly, this edge has given me nerve damage on the underside of my foot. Who would have thought they'd have you walking on such garbage by design? If you feel a lump in front of your heel, take the shoes off and toss them. Or send them back.

Thirty Three years to date and I’m finally going to retire my old Sperry Top Siders! These were issued to me in the Coast Guard 33 years ago and I’ve never slipped into a more comfortable and durable shoe. They have been worn, on average, every other day. Salt water, fresh water, sand, mud, grass and asphalt, nothing has been to much for these shoes and trust me, I’m not gentile on my feet!Everybody has their “go to” pair of shoes for carrying on with daily life (running errands, walking the dog, getting the mail, yard work…amongst many other countless chores) and these were mine. I can go on and on about my experience with owning these shoes and all we’ve been through together. I bought a pair of new "Authentic Original" boat shoes from the Sperry website only sixteen months ago and already they are falling apart. The rubber edges around the front of the soles have decayed, leaving the stiches nothing to attach to, so the front of both soles are now detached from the leather uppers. The pathetic thing is that I rarely wear these and haven't set foot on a sailboat even once: the rubber sole is so cheap, time alone is enough to degrade it. My last set of REAL Sperry topsiders lasted over twenty years, so there is nothing original or authentic about these new ones. From other reviews I see this was not a fluke. I will not buy Sperry again.

Bought these 3 months ago and have only worn them maybe 4 times to church only at this time. The sole has started to pull away from the front of the shoe. This did not happen with 2 previous pairs that lasted for years. Am still wearing a pair that is many years old and other than looking beat up are doing well. Was happy to see that Sperry brought back the Ice color this year. Since I like the Ice color for summer, I will try to get these replaced. I have seen on the Sperry web site that this issue has been experienced by several others. I will try to get these replaced by Sperry. I am hoping they will stand behind their typically excellent product(s). Other than the issue with the sole pulling off the shoe, these appear to be like my 2 other pair. Horrible Quality - Soles split along seam at toe while stitching remains intact. Sadly, the quality of these shoes has dropped to rock bottom. My wife bought me a pair for Christmas. In the spring, I wore them out to one evening of dancing. The tip of the sole at the toe split an inch or more on each side, along the stitching. The stitches remained intact. A month ago, my wife replaced them with the same model. One 2-mile walk along Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach - the same thing. I've had Sperry's for years without a problem, each pair lasting 5 - 7 years. Looks like the quality of the sole material has been drastically downgraded to save money. Bad move folks - you lost a customer.
I bought two pairs in the last two years and are falling apart. What happened to the shoes? I remember 30 years ago the last forever and you could walk from miles comfortably not comfortable anymore and the soles are cheap. The leather is cheap. The soles are thinner and softer, they look thick on the outside but inside if you peeled it back, it’s thin. I found a pair of old ones the thrift store. Another pair I’m going back to a thrift store. 30 years ago everyone at my prep school. And love them ever since until the last couple years. What happened. I don’t mind if they’re made in China, but the specs have to be right. Did someone buy his company.? Don’t take my word for it. Look at the ratings lately.
Dear Macy’s Customer Service,I have been purchasing these shoes for the last 12 years and have always been satisfied with their quality. However, I am utterly disappointed with the last pair I acquired in November, as they fell apart after only a few uses. This is regrettable because I love the design and comfort of these shoes. To give you an idea of the issue, I am uploading images of the pair that broke—similar to the experiences of many other customers—and a pair that is almost three years old and used daily, which is still in good condition.Given this stark difference in quality, I wish to get a refund or replacement with a quality product.I wish to get a refund or replacement with the quality product.Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Great boat shoes. This is my second pair. The leather is nice and looks like full grain; it molds to your feed in a few weeks for a perfect, roomy fit. I have wide toes, and these shoes are the most comfortable ones I have.No extra foam or padding or that crap. Just a leather upper visibly sewn onto a siped rubber sole, with a half-length footbed for the heel. The fuzzy bare leather on the ball of the foot and the upper part of the shoe will gradually smooth out with use until it feels like a slipper, and it never holds an odor (unlike any lined shoe, which eventually smells if I wear it barefoot). My one issue is that the sole squeaks. Something about the sticky rubber pulling away from the floor. I've never found a way to get it to stop. Oh well, this is still ... MoreGreat boat shoes. This is my second pair. The shoe is what one might call a 'traditional' as the product is often seen along the seaboard states and summer holiday crowds. The good side is; the product hasn't changed in years; allowing for a convenient choice when considering replacing the 'old ' dogs. The fair to less than wanted is the stiffness in the new shoes. The upper or top and back of the shoe is considerably more stiff; to the point of causing a blister and discomfort. This may have been a 'break-in' of shoes from decades ago; but the shoes of this era are rarely if ever needing such a time leading one to avoid the shoes over other choices in a closet.Sad, but true; the leather needs to be softer or more pliable before placing the product on the shelves in a marketplace.
Used to be great, quality has gone way downhill. I have now had 3+ replacements on my authentic originals within the 8 months. I’ve been wearing the exact shoes for 20 years and usually replace them once every 3 years as I typically wear these shoes everyday. In the past, really the only reason I replaced them was due to them looking dirty and worn, not that they were falling apart. I still have a few pairs from well over 5 years ago that are perfectly functional but look very seasoned. I’ve never seen it where the stitching is so bad that every pair is falling apart after light wear. Specifically, the front of the sole is coming apart from the stitching and causing the front to flop. Unfortunately, I have read many other reviews from Sperry and I hope they are reading these and correcting the issue. I really hope that Sperry gets this figured out. I love the shoes and style but the craftsmanship needs to seriously be improved.
