UPDATE 6/20/2015Since posting my original review, I've had a precipitous dropoff in the desire to play. As noted in the review, I had reached a point where I had literally done everything the game had to offer and I had reached that point through casual play, not marathon sessions. Although Nintendo has added two more weapons and one more map, I just find myself at the "meh" stage with this game because the modes have worn themselves thin. I was excited to at least participate in the first Splatfest event but it was indefinitely postponed due to matchmaking issues. Worse yet, Nintendo did little to really inform the playerbase; If you weren't looking at the official Splatoon Tumblr page, you would have never known the event was postponed. Most people signed in after the start time only to discover that all traces of the event have been wiped away from the game - no billboard in Inkopolis and no more Splatfest tee shirts in the character gear. When and if they get this sorted, the entire event will start from scratch, meaning it will be several WEEKS for Splatfest to return, in a best case scenario.I keep tabs on the new weapon and map releases but without some additional modes beyond Turf War and King of the Hill - sorry, Splat Zones - I'm afraid the game's going to be on the shelf for a while. I'd knock the game down half a star if I could but since half-stars aren't allowed, I'll leave my original 4-stars... for now.ORIGINAL REVIEW:Splatoon, an all-new property, is.

Nintendo is finally branching out of their tried-and-true character lines like Zelda, Mario, Metroid, DK, etc, in order to make a great idea happen here. It's an ingenious idea, Nintendo making a "shooter" where everyone essentially has super soakers and the main point of the game is to make the biggest mess. It translates into a great game. The single player campaign is very, very fun. It's what Nintendo has always specialized in, and it does not disappoint. It's shorter than most traditional Nintendo games though, because I think their focus was the online multiplayer. And speaking of the online multiplayer, it's fantastic. It's a blast. There's a huge variety of weapons that spread ink in various ways, and everyone plays differently. Each game is different, which adds a lot of replay value. The only issues I've run into are that you can't guarantee you'll be on the same team with your friends when you play online (which is getting patched in August), and you have to leave a game lobby to switch weapons. Past that, everything looks great. People whine about not having voice chat, but for people with kids, I think it's a major perk haha.PLEASE be aware though that there currently is no local multiplayer past a 1v1 game. For me this wasn't a huge deal, I take turns with my siblings playing online when they come over. For some people though, this can be a game.

This is honestly one of the best games I've ever played. I'm a 30YO woman who has been playing video games for a long time. I've played and still play on various platforms. I personally prefer turn based RPG so I didn't initially give the Splatoon game a chance. My two kids ages 4 and 11 both play the online and campaign modes. My husband has beat the campaign mode several times and plays online. My 11 year old has beat all but the final boss on the campaign mode.I'm glad I personally decided to give Splatoon a chance. I've always struggled with the controls for live action games. This has helped me develop my gaming skills. I really normally handcuffed myself to turn based combat games so I've been limited on what I could play. I'm now a level 34 on the online mode ... It bridges the new gamers with original gamers. It helped me overcome my limitations and got me interested in more than just turn based battle systems. I thought I was too "old" to learn a new battle system. Before playing Splatoon I also didn't enjoy having to manually turn the camera during live action. After playing Splatoon I can now do this with ease. Splatoon does have a mode where it automatically controls the camera for you. Being someone who always struggled with that I thought I would enjoy this feature. I don't at all. It made me motion sick. I h.

In short, this game is fun. The multiplayer has a wide variety of weapons and while it might look a bit chaotic, there's actually plenty of strategy and skill involved in figuring out the best way to cover the most ground without letting the other team get too far ahead. The balance isn't perfect, but it's about as good as you could possibly get it. The gameplay is unique and puts a completely new spin on the whole shooter formula; if you do what you do in every other shooter and focus on trying to attack the enemy, you'll probably end up losing. The goal here is to coat the arena in as much of your team's in as possible, and it's a completely different feeling from games that are more combat based. The whole "swim in your own team's ink" thing also adds an additional level of strategy and mobility. The single-player mode is also surprisingly well-thought out. Again, it isn't combat-oriented so much as something of a puzzle-based platformer. You have to use your ink to manipulate the environment and create paths for yourself to proceed, taking out a few enemies along the way. It's a bit on the short side, but pretty much all of it is tons of fun and really forces you to get inventive with the game mechanics. The game's aesthetic is also fun. It harkens back to 90's era Nickelodeon style where everything is bright, colorful, and goofy. The whole thing is pretty ridiculous at times, but it's entirely intentional and against all odds, it really works. It doesn't l.
Splatoon is the newest IP released by Nintendo of this ear towards the end of May. It is the very first true shooter that they ever made, and boy did they do good on exploring new territory with gaming.Splatoon follows the Inklings; a race of humanoid, squid like people who can transform into a squid-blooper like creature that swims through ink. 100 years ago, the Octavions (the inkling's enemies), attacked them, resulting in a war. It's up to you as the next agent for the former hero of the Inklings to go into the fray and stop DJ Octavio. The game has both single player support and multiplayer support. It's multiplayer is what you would expect from a Call of Duty, Battlefield, like game, though with an entirely new objective. Rather than focusing on killing as much as possible, you have to cover the most territory than your opposing team using your weapons. While obviously reducing the active members of the opposing team helps, it is not the sole objective. It's multiplayer does alot of things right; especially for the first attempt at this for Nintendo. The matches are short and quick, which lets you actively get into new games. It does a good job at keeping a balance among the players, though I have been in those "Team Skrub vs Camping w****" games on occasions. They do this by limiting you to players around your skill bracket, and should you fall into a new bracket, they will reassign you to players who are.
The game's one player mode doesn't exactly point you in the right direction of how the game is played, and its short. The game is strictly a multiplayer game, but online. The game's online experience however is great. as you level up, more and more things get unlocked. I'm not a fan of how the players look, you're given only two choices, one girl and one boy, you can only make changes to their skin or eyes, nothing else. The game goes away from what people are used to when it comes to killing each other, it doesn't mean it isn't important to kill though! You can't communicate in game which is great. The game is targeted to younger audiences with a more mature audience being attracted to it. We've all played on xbox live at one point or another and the name calling can get really intense, and the message harassment is even worse. You can't do that, you can express frustration through messages in the plaza but no one pays too much attention to that. From when I bought this until now, I think, maybe 5 new stages were added, and 2 game modes. Then team mode was also added, if you have friends with wiiU's or join a community online. Makes it easy to communicate for sure if everyone hops on to skype or any other program to talk. The problem here is that the game is a new IP and the community will be young. The game was advertised during Smash Bros tournaments and it caught my interest. I've been playing smash bros since the first title came out, and a lot of people that played Melee w.
Splatoon is to CoD what Smash Bros is to SF. It can be played casually or competitively. Just like in any game, there's tons of little tricks and tips to be found. New content is constantly thrown out, and it depends on the person whether they like the idea of the online maps changing daily. There's probably a lot more by the time you see this. I'll be upfront- I pre-ordered this game and was upset that UPS gave it me 10 minutes after I was supposed to. Confusing to look up/down to do required things for some-Incomplete. I guess they figured the game was fun enough at 65% but it's still bad practice-Currently no friends-only lobby or way to choose teams-Annoying, unskippable intro that tells you the day's maps-Lobby interface is bad; no way to exit once entered, no way to change weapon without exiting, and other little details-Weapon and stats make little difference, but this.
To summarize this game real quickly, it is simply a ton of FUN. Each user on the Wii U console gets their single save file, so if you want multiple profiles, you must have multiple users (each with a Nintendo Network ID so you can use the online services). Nintendo's first foray into a shooting type game is a unique experience. Instead of gritty, bloody, gorey gameplay, you have a bright, vibrant, and colorful experience. The game is continuously being updated with new weapons, plenty of bug fixes, map changes, and weapon balancing. This is a single-player online-focused game, so don't expect much for "couch co-op". There is a local two player mode, but it's not going to keep you playing for too long (and requires a Wii U Pro Controller in addition to the GamePad) ... There is a local two player mode, but it's not going to keep you playing for too long (and requires a Wii U Pro Controller in addition to the GamePad) The single player campaign is a good training ground for the mechanics and gameplay you will use in multiplayer.Everything considered, this game is a ton of fun, and the uniqueness of the weapons' design and functionality is charming. However, it's not just about shooting others, it's about inking the ground (or an objective in Ranked mode). There is plenty of gear to buy (all in-game currency, no micro-transactions) for your head, clothing, and shoes. Each piece of gear has certain abilities that can enhance your playstyle (i.e. run speed up, quick respawn, etc). In SplatFest events, which divide all regional players into a competition (i.e. Pirates vs. Ninjas) for 24 hours, you can play and rank up to earn.
Part of the reason I love this game so much is it's unlike anything else out there. Calling it a shooter really doesn't do justice to what this game is. It's as much a platformer as it a shooter, particularly for the single player campaign. Only Nintendo could have made this game like they did. It's obviously made by a company with lots of experience doing platformers. The campaign levels have a very Mario-like feel, with all sorts of clever and intriguing elements. It has always bothered me that people don't give more love to Nintendo and the Wii U. They're like the Pixar of video game companies. They make games that are appropriate and fun for just about everyone. Kids love them, but they're not childish. Adults like them, but kids can still play them. I don't even ... MorePart of the reason I love this game so much is it's unlike anything else out there. I have an XBone, too, and love my GTA V type games, but it's nice to see someone out there is making games like Splatoon and Mario. Even people who don't play a ton of video games like Wii U games. My girlfriend has never touched the XBone, yet she bought the Wii U and plays it all time.Nintendo has been a company that has gone its own way for awhile. While the PS4 and XBone are basically Coke and Pepsi, Wii U is Dr. Pepper. You guys wanna make a standard two joystick controller? Screw that, lets make a main controller with a screen in it and let people use nunchucks for the other controllers. You wan.
As I am sure you have heard, this is the best shooting game since James Bond. I like the fact that it is colorful and there are a ton of different weapons that have different qualities and sub weapons that are neat. I wish I could say this game will stay for a long time, but I have concerns that once a new system comes out (which will be soon) the online play will lose its appeal as there will be less and less people online. The one player play is awesome, I wish they had a lot more 1 player levels. The amiibo levels are good too, you have to have the amiibo for the content unlock. It also gets you used to the main 3 types of weapons. I wish there were not so many costumes, it is a bit overwhelming trying to find the right combo of what you need as far as abilities ... The one player play is awesome, I wish they had a lot more 1 player levels. The amiibo levels are good too, you have to have the amiibo for the content unlock. It also gets you used to the main 3 types of weapons. I wish there were not so many costumes, it is a bit overwhelming trying to find the right combo of what you need as far as abilities go. I wish you could spend money to buy certain abilities but I know people like to dress their inkling in cool clothes too. The mini games are a plus, keeps you busy while waiting online for sure, but they get old after awhile, especially when you get to the same level over and over and keep dying or stuck. Overall, I would tell you to buy this game in a heartbeat. It is very fun and definitely worth the $60 I payed when it first came out.
