I bought this specifically to connect a PS3 to a late 2009 27" iMac and it's working great. As a previous reviewer mentioned, you can only output 720p (not 1080p) from the PS3 (I knew that before buying) but other than that it works perfectly and also sends audio over the same cable (which plays through the iMac's speakers). Mine also came with a DisplayPort->mini DisplayPort convertor (not listed in the description) which also works great. This device has made my old iMac a much more versatile monitor. A few things to keep in mind if you are going for a similar setup: 1. If your PS3 is already hooked up to a different TV/monitor, configure it for 720p over HDMI before you disconnect and hook it up to the iMac. Otherwise you will likely need to hold the power button ... MoreI bought this specifically to connect a PS3 to a late 2009 27" iMac and it's working great. Otherwise you will likely need to hold the power button for 5 sec when turning on the PS3 to force it into "safe mode". 2. Keep a keyboard connected to the iMac (or use a bluetooth one) for volume/brightness control and to hit Cmd+F2 if needed to force it to switch to the HDMI input. 3. I don't think this device will work with newer iMacs which have the Thunderbolt video input, but I don't have one so I can't confirm. 4. The device does run a little warm, so keep it away from other heat sources (like the PS3) to avoid overheating.

This HDMI to DisplayPort is Awesome! for some reason you can go from DP to HDMI but if you need to do HDMI to DP, you need additional power. I made the mistake thinking just flip a cable around - nope! if the label says DisplayPort to HDMI, that means output is DP and monitor is HDMI. if your output is HDMI and you want to go to DP? Don't turn the cable around, it isn't working without this gem. Much worth the little expense.
My title pretty much sums it up. This adapter works for utilizing a single DP monitor connection. My hope was that it would allow me to use my dual DP monitors on my HDMI only laptop. My other laptop has a DP port and I connect two 27" monitors to a StarTech DP hub (MSTDP123DP, ASIN B00JLRBB8I)...works perfectly. My other laptop (work) has only USB and HDMI ports. So...enter this adapter. I connected the HDMI to DP adapter...then connected it to the previously mentioned hub. No joy. Works with a single monitor directly. Works with a single monitor connected via the hub...but two connected DP monitors results in two black screens with a "no signal" message. So, I doubt my use case was intended in the design so it is not fault of the product. Works as designed and ... MoreMy title pretty much sums it up. However; consider other options if you intend to connect multiple DP monitors to your "HDMI only" device.
Necessary for attaching my Wacom Cintiq Pro to my 27" Dell XPS. Fortunately another reviewer suggested this display port converter, combined with the D2MDPMF6IN to connect the two. When I contacted Wacom for help from a 'live' person, all I got was the runaround and no guarantee that anything would work. Many thanks to the reviewer who had the exact info I needed. It is clunky and clumsy, but it is what it is.
After beating my head against a wall for 2 weeks and buying $100 worth of the wrong stuff from other places I called customer service. Within 5 minutes the tech new exactly what I needed and gave me the part numbers. Ordered the parts online and a couple of days later they showed up. Plugged them in and turned everything on and it works perfectly. I was concerned that my $1000 Wacom display tablet would be useless because I didn't have a displayport on my laptop but this solved the problem. Thanks Startech.
Really surprised with the negative reviews and complaints from iMac owners about the limitation of 720p. Had mine a week now, between a FIOS cable box and a mid-2010 27" iMac and it works really well. I've tried viewing it up close (3 feet) and across a small room (8 feet) and both look fine. Not the same as my Samsung 42" 1080p or my HiDef Sony projector on a 100" screen - but for a small, somewhat dark room, it looks great. Also surprised about the complaints about heat - mine is warm but not hot. Installation was pure plug and play. Connected HDMI from the cable box to the StarTech and connected the StarTech to my DisplayPort and it worked right away. Crisp video, reasonable sound - no complaints about 720p for the 27" screen. This is exactly what I wanted to ... MoreReally surprised with the negative reviews and complaints from iMac owners about the limitation of 720p. Worked perfectly to adapt Chromebook's HDMI output to display port monitor input. I've used up to 1080P. Does not seem to need the USB power to be plugged in, I guess that's there only in case the HDMI port can't supply enough? Anyway, great device and there doesn't seem to be another option on the market to do the same thing.
I bought the adapter in the hope I could use it with my ps5 to 1440p monitor which only supports max resolution over display port - and it works perfectly achieving 1440p @ 60hz. I'm thrilled.
