StarTech USB 3.0 to Dual DisplayPort Adapter 4K 60Hz

$145.00

(89 reviews)

This USB to Dual DisplayPort adapter allows you to connect two 4K DisplayPort monitors (60 Hz) to your Windows or Mac PC. Create a dual 4K 60 Hz workstation. With the adapter, it is possible to output dual 4K resolution at 60 Hz on two independent screens through a single USB 3.0 port on your laptop. Simply connect the adapter via a USB 3.0 port (5 Gbps) to your Windows or Mac system and connect your DisplayPort monitors to the adapter. The adapter enables you to enjoy ultra-HD videos on multiple screens, even if your system does not natively support the 4K video format. With two UHD 4K screens, you can work more efficiently and achieve higher productivity. Since each screen delivers performance at 4K level, you have four times the screen real estate compared to 1080p. With multiple screens, you can output different content on each screen at resolutions up to 4096 x 2160p (60 Hz). The dual DisplayPort adapter is ideal for business applications such as spreadsheets, word processing systems, and web browsers. Multitasking and previewing different data points on each screen is a breeze. For example, you can calculate data on one screen, write a report on the second, and browse the internet on your laptop screen.

First, it works perfect. I succeeded in connecting two extra 4K monitors at the same time with my new MacBook Air M1 version and there was no observable latency. However, Displaylink technology will use your CPU as GPU to draw those figures, in this case, when you watching some videos on the monitor extended by DisplayLink, it will cost quite a lot CPU and make you computer much hotter than normal temperature. So if you just buy it for some text edit work, it is a good choice, but if you are doing some designing task like drawing, or video processing, you may need a second though. By the way, it is not the fault of this product, I believe it is the fault of M1 chip, so I still give it 4 stars.

Great product that solved a very specific problem with my Mac Mini M1. I was finally able to get 60hz out of my hdmi 2.0 monitors. No other solution worked until I used this adapter. I'm using an HMDI 2.0 switcher (the main problem) with another computer, and for some reason could not get 60hz from my monitor plugged into the HDMI port on the mac mini m1, even with an assortment of different cable brands / types (only using the hub/switcher, directly plugging into the computer worked, but limited me to only 2 monitors). I used this adapter to run a display port to hdmi cable to the switcher and then installed the DisplayLink software / helper, which runs in the background and doesn't need attending. The unit is warm to the touch but other than that no other strange observations. Looking forward to trying to plug in a fifth monitor - just because! :)

Great solution to add more displays
16 December 2020

I needed to connect 5 monitors on a single PC and only had a HDMI and VGA adaptor onboard.First I searched for a dedicated graphics card with 5 output ports, but that seemed to be difficult because it needed to be low profile and there aren't much graphics cards with that much ports.I'am glad I found this adaptor from Startech, since it's a very easy solution to add multiple monitors with a far lower price than a graphics card would've cost.I connected two Startech adaptors and used the HDMI port for the 5th monitor.Everything was working right out of the box, I didn't even needed to install drivers.Very happy with them!

I previously had an adapter that only operated at 30hz, and after replacing that with this one (that is 60 hz) i am thoroughly impressed. While the USB adapter isn't perfect for all kinds of 4k content, like videos and graphical stuff, my useage of basic text and mouse / windows work is perfect. I am using this because the type C ports on my expensive ultrabook burned up. Work aroud succesfful! A cheap 100 dollar fix for something that likley costs an entire ly new motherboard or laptop. UPDATE AFTER 1 WEEK. I've changed my review to 4 stars instead of 5. The device began to malfunction and eventually completely failed after about an hour of usage. I've returned the item. i'm going to purchase another and then see whether it fails in the same way after a few weeks. Check back in a month or so for an updated review. UPDATE AFTER A REPLACEMENT DEVICE I'm currently using a replacement to the last one that i used. It has only been two days, so i'll update this review after a few more weeks to report what's changed since this time. So far no abnormal failures. I've determined that the additional heat from the charging process of the laptop is related to the failure of the adapter. So far it has not failed unless the laptop is changing and the physical heat of the SSD and the 4 cores rises to and stays at or above 50 Centigrade. UPDATE AFTER 2 WEEKS: I've used the adapter while on the changer (see note above) and that does not seem to influence the failures. Maybe its temperature, but my latest hypothesis is that the data transfer rate between my usb 3.0 to a 4k 60 fps monitor is not equal; ~600 MB for USB3, 3.4 Gig for display port. The adapter has malfunctioned when doing video or media, but for static spreadsheet, document, web browsing, it seems to be just fine!! UPDATE AFTER THREE MONTHS: I can use the adapter for at least a few hours with low workload before it crashes. Unfortunately, when it does inevitably crash, half the time my computer will free and i have to give it a full re-start. I noticed the ominous "black box" part of this adapter gets warm after use, and so maybe cooling it will help alleviate failures? Or perhaps it could just use a "break" now and then?

I've had the USB32DP24K60 for a week now , and when it works it's great. The problem is that it randomly stops working and requires a reboot to reset. It was driving my two 4K monitors at 60Hz, but the first time it froze I changed it to 30Hz. It froze again. I managed to find a mini-DisplayPort cable and switched one of the monitors to that; another lock-up. This is my work computer and it's happening at least once a day, sometimes twice. It's happening between 2 and 6 hours of use. The adapter gets a little warm, but not close to what I'd consider hot. I've got the latest DisplayLink drivers from the StarTech web site (v9.3.3147.0, 1/29/2020) This is really irritating and if I don't find a solution I'm returning it.

It is a very compact device. It converted the poor screen resolution on my laptop to 4K UHD high resolution and colorful graphic on the large external display. I bought my laptop about a year ago based on the CPU, memory, disk space performance, but I did not realize the screen resolution was so poor. I was looking for the 3 things, A large high resolution external monitor with DP port, an external graphic adapter with HDMI port (input) and DP port (output). I setup my display to the highest resolution that 4K UHD can get, then It worked perfectly to achieved my wish. The device gets the medium hot temperature with one port use. So I set to my laptop screen to sleep when I am not using 20 min, just in case. Also be patient to establish connection between the laptop HDMI port and the monitor via this adapter at the boot time, may take 10-20 sec. but it will automatic establish the connection at 4K UHD resolution. Thank you!

It works, once you install the drivers. I'm running 4 monitors on my m1 Mac mini now. Mixed 4k and 1080 with no problems. I'm running a 1080P monitor on the internal hdmi port, 2 LG 4k monitors on the Startech, and my iPad on sidecar, simultaneously, with no lag or conflicts. I can also replace the sidecar with another hdmi monitor using Airplay through my old gen3 AppleTV, with minimal lag. The only hitch with Airplay is that this arrangement will crash Final Cut Pro.

It installed a DisplayLink software which although I don't like having to install software, it does appear to be more reputable than others I have had to install for display adaptors. After the software was installed the adaptor worked immediately when connected. It is equally as fast and reliable as using the manufacturer band's docking station. Not a single hiccup using this adaptor after the software was installed (I am using Windows 10).I wish that I didn't have to install any software to use this adaptor, but once it got going it was working well. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

I am using this setup on a MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014) and have zero issues or complaints. I will update later should anything arise but for now I am one happy camper.
