Easy to use.plug and play. I Thought my laptop was incapable of gigabit throughput, the problem ended up being a CAT 5 cable was in use and not a CAT 6 . Yes the adapter did make the connection a little faster with the wrong network cable. CAT 5 is NOT capable of high speed transfer. I changed to a high speed CAT 6 cable and actually got BETTER throughput WITHOUT the adapter. This product best suits users who don't have a network input on their laptop, and must use USB. Will be returning because i don't need this adapter,i just needed a better cable. I will be purchasing a CAT 7 cable for this laptop station. Would have posted pictures of test scores but they wont let you. Speakeasy Bandwidth test 410 Mbps with adapter 750 Mbps without Ookla Bandwidth test 680 Mbps ... MoreEasy to use.plug and play. Excellent design for a Gigabit Ethernet adapter. The USB cable and connectors are sufficiently thick and well constructed to make you feel that this hardware is going to last. It also comes with an additional USB-passthrough port on the adapter itself and ensuring that you still have a USB port to plug in your other devices, which is crucially important for new devices with only 1 USB port (i.e. the Microsoft Surface Pro 4). Powered internally by the AX88179 chip, which I believe is compatible with OSX.

I bought this with the intention of connecting my virtual network environment to my real hardware for lab purposes. For the most part, it seems to work for normal stuff like connecting your computer to an Ethernet cable for inernet connectivity. The problem arise when trying to connect virtual and real lab environments. I have experienced flapping interfaces between my virtual router and physical layer 3 switch. I have tried numerous configurations and routing protocols, but the flapping interfaces remains. I won't let that fact ding this review too much. I am sure that for most people who aren't doing networking labs, this is just fine. That said, if you wan't a NIC for your lab, then you may want to explore options.

I got an brand new laptop with specs. like i7, SSD drive, 16G RAM but with 100 MB Ethernet port. This saved my life, I plugged it into my only USB 3.0 port and it worked right away. The big plus is that I got a HD webcam and it didn't work in any USB hub, its had to be plugged in directly in the computer. Now I got the cam plugged in the StarTech.com USB 3.0 to Gigabit Network Adapter together with a 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive and they all are working flawlessly and I got my 1.0 Gbps speed. I Love it. Oh OS is Windows 10 64bits.
I own, have owned and have broken several of these. When they work, they are great .They show in Windows 10 Network Status as Ethernet 5. I use them with Surface Laptop and Surface Pro. Apparently, resting the laptop on my lap puts a little bending pressure on the Startech. Eventually it stops working ... its not the USB port, because the next adapter (even same brand) works fine.
I'm using this on the Nintendo Switch through the USB port on the back. The only issue when using it on the Switch is that the download/upload speed is capped at between 10 to 20 mbps, but this is due to Nintendo not enabling the USB 3.0 feature on the back of the switch dock (it still runs at 2.0 speeds). When connected to a computer, it works perfectly at full speed. Nevertheless. this is a must-buy for Nintendo Switch users who need/want lower latency for online gameplay!
The built in Ethernet adapter on my almost 10-year old Lenovo ThinkPad W700 get fried by lightning a couple years ago. Fortunately, the Wi-Fi adapter was not damaged, so I still had Internet and network connectivity, but at Wi-Fi speeds. That was not at problem until the W700 was replaced about 18 months ago by a Lenovo ThinkPad P71 and the Lenovo W700 was moved upstairs. Our house has a metal roof and the Wi-Fi throughput is significantly degraded in that area of our house. Not a big problem for Internet usage but moving large files, doing backups, or syncing files between the two-system using our LAN became painfully slow. So much so that I started using the old 'sneaker net' approach and began moving files and data back and forth with thumb drives. My W700 is from the days before USB 3.0 and only has native USB 2.0 ports. USB 2.0 thumb drives is certainly faster than weak Wi-Fi but still relatively slow, and always cumbersome. The first thing I did was obtain a StarTech USB 3.0 ExpressCard. The USB 3.0 ExpressCard has worked perfectly. Having one USB 3.0 port means I can use USB 3.0 Thumb drives. USB 3.0 connectivity at both ends of the LAN made moving larger amounts of data faster but I still had the hassle of physically carrying thumb drives back and forth, and up and down stairs, between the two Lenovo systems. I tried a USB 2.0 ethernet adapter, but speeds were about the same as Wi-Fi. Then I tried the StarTech USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter plugged into the StarTech USB 3.0 ExpressCard. I had no idea if this would work and crossed my fingers as I rebooted Windows 10. And work it did, and very well I might add. Now I can once again move large blocks of data such as 200 or 300 15mb-18mb photo files between my two Lenovo laptops in a minute or less. And one of my backup strategies of syncing files between the two systems is now much quicker.
With Windows 10, I just plugged it into a USB3.0 socket, plugged in the Ethernet cable into it, turned the computer on, shortly after the boot the 2 lights lit on the unit. Internet Icon was activated on taskbar screen. Have internet, checked the speed; 90MPS down, 26 upload. Was getting 25MPS down, 20up with the USB2 and the WI-FI. The Ethernet circuit on this motherboard stopped working, I've then got a new MB, but I used it in another computer. The StarTech came with a installation CD, but Win 10 was ready for it and I didn't have to use it. I've never had a Ethernet circuit on a MB go before. So if your Ethernet on your Motherboard goes, and WIFI is too slow for you, this is the way to go.
Worked as expected. Not sure why devices include disks anymore? Most current laptops don't have drives in them. My MacBook Air and Dell XPS don't even have an ethernet port on it, which lead to the purchase. It's just as easy to download the drivers from the website. No need to add more junk to our landfills. StarTech is the only choice for products in this realm.
Works great on my 2013 11" MacBook Air, running Mavericks. This model is the first Air with USB3, so it can take full advantage of the adapter. I do see very good throughput, spiking at the maximum gigabit ethernet speed (close to 120Mb/Sec, copying from the Air SSD to a Mac Pro SSD). I do not see sustained 120Mb/sec, but rather spikes at 120Mb/sec and troughs at 70Mb/sec. All in all, it's almost as good as the Thunderbolt ethernet adapter, and it's good to have if you want to use the thunderbolt port for something else such as video out. Be sure to download the correct drivers. Search for AX88179 mac drivers and you'll find it. The CD that came with the device is too old, and will certainly not work with Mavericks and probably won't even work with 10.7 and 10.8. ... MoreWorks great on my 2013 11" MacBook Air, running Mavericks.
