Total piece of garbage. The unit will not run faster than idle without bogging down and or dying. I have only used it 5 times because of this. One time, the 3rd use, it ran perfectly for about 20 minutes. I have drained the fuel and bought new gas and made new mix to no avail. I am a professional landscaper and bought this as a spare while my other trimmer was in the shop. I can't edge with this, when it runs, because the torque twists the head back and forth so much. I can't even recommend this to a homeowner for light use.

I’m a loyal Stihl customer. I can’t help but believe that my FS 38 poor performance maybe more about where I bought it then the product itself. It was my Father’s Day gift and the business I usually buy from didn’t have it in stock. So I purchased it from Ace Hardware and I believe that was a mistake. The person helping me didn’t know anything about it. He couldn’t get it started in the back, so he brought it out front and attempted to start it again. I looked at it and saw that he had it turned off. I asked if I could try to start it. After clearing the excess fuel, I got it to start but it took a lot more pulls than the recommended 5. I’m used to my favorite store fine tuning it before handing it over to me, but I didn’t want them messing it up anymore than they ... MoreI’m a loyal Stihl customer. I bought this a few weeks ago as I needed one for my house. Chose this model since it was the cheapest. Got the extended warranty by purchasing the Stihl Ultra synthetic mix oil. Few things to note out of the manual, do not put the engine at full throttle until you have gone through 3 or more thanks of fuel. Engine needs to break in, so quarter to half throttle. The instructions are not very clear on how to put in new line once the sample amount is used up. There's a video on YouTube from Stihl on how to do it and that was very helpful. 2.0mm and 2.4mm line are what this machine can use. Now I'm only on my third tank of fuel, but so far I like it. I only use 87 Octane non-oxygenated (ethanol free), would use 91 if it was in my town, but it has worked well. The pull ... MoreI bought this a few weeks ago as I needed one for my house. I only use the choke for a couple pulls so it doesn't flood. But you can thank emissions for that one, will not fault Stihl.

IMHO - FS38: Great motor, starts without fail regularly without issue. The grip seems flimsy as the alignment of the two halves shifts during use. It's never been apart nor dropped significantly so I think it may be in design. It would also be nice to be able to adjust that grip alone for one handed use. I wrote Stihl questioning that and was told it is a two handed design, I presume OSHA driven, LOL.The Trimming Head? Such a poor design they came out with a replacement. Of course they charged you for the upgrade, because you really get that sick of the original design. I question Stihl's ethics here. The new head which is pretty cool in theory tends to wrap both strings into one groove which causes a bind. A clearance issue in design of which I asked Stihl ... MoreIMHO - FS38: Great motor, starts without fail regularly without issue. The grip seems flimsy as the alignment of the two halves shifts during use. Brand new it's very hard to start and after it starts there's an intermittent bog down when throttling as if there's a vacuum leak. I've been back twice and now it's unreturnable and left at the shop for repair at an undetermined date. Even if it's repaired I will have a refurbished piece of equipment for the price of a new one. They got my money but I have nothing to use until they decide to return the trimmer. It only proves that Made in the USA doesn't mean what it did in days gone by. Buy local ain't all it's supposed to be either. If I had bought a defective trimmer at one of the big box stores I could have returned it.
I purchased this on 6/1 and used it 6/2. The trimmer line seems like it breaks too quickly. I am trimming in area less than a quarter of a acre. With my old trimmer I could often go two cut periods without changing the line. Granted I was using a thicker line with my old trimmer, the head options seem to be limited to the Duro-Cut design. I would love to have a head option where I can manually insert the line of my choice as the autofeed feature is hit or miss. It jammed a couple of times when on my first use so for me that means this will be an ongoing challenge with the default head. If there is a better choice out there, please let me know as I would love for this to become my goto trimmer for basic home use.
I purchased an FS38 weed eater. It was a problem from day one. We had issues starting it. Got it going then the line feeder wouldn’t feed out the line when tapped on the ground. I’d take it in they’d fix it and the next time I’d use it I had to take it back in again. After taking it back several times, they finally said I needed a new head. Which they did not give me even though the original didn’t work. I paid for it and that one did the same thing. I then buy a different style head and that one works for a while then stops working. I email Stihl, they send me a head where you feed precut line into a head, so every time you need new line you have to turn it off put in the line and restart. However now the line breaks almost instantly. The pull start handle then ... MoreI purchased an FS38 weed eater. It was a problem from day one. We had issues starting it. However now the line breaks almost instantly. The pull start handle then won’t recoil so I have to replace that. I email Stihl again then play phone tag for two weeks before I talk to someone who basically said it was me and not the trimmer. I spent more on a Stihl because it was supposed to be better. I know a few people who have one and it works great for them. Ace hardware told me it was likely a bad one, which happens from time to time. I’m very disappointed to say the least that the company is not replacing it, as it has been trouble from the onset. I’m now pitching it and buying a different brand!
I bought this trimmer to use for my landscaping business because of it being light weight and still higher RPM then other trimmers. I did swap the shafts to use a straight shaft with it but other than that, it has been phenomenal. I read other reviews about problems with it but I went ahead and purchased it and boy am I glad I did. I’m increbly Impressed with it. We’ve run exclusively 131r’s for so long but the weight of them is killer. This thing, paired with the right trimmer head (speedfeed400) and string, is definitely worth the purchase.
I purchased my Stihl FS38 curved shaft, gas powered string-trimmer from McCauley Equipment in Oro-Medonte (Ontario, Canada). The first day I used it....the string kept breaking as if it was made of thin glass. I replaced the line, as per the instructions on YouTube (Stihl sponsored video), and the line continued to break very easily. I returned to the same store, and they replaced the head (free of charge), which was great. The subsequent head would not "advance" line, when "bumped", as every Stihl string trimmer I have used in the past, would do. I suspect I just got a lousy (made on Friday before a long weekend) model. I would NEVER buy another FS 38 string trimmer, but I WILL continue to purchase other Stihl products, without question. I bought this unit because of the brand name thinking it has to be good. I should have done some research! I have used the trimmer for only about 3-hours. My first experience after bringing it home from the store where they filled it with gas and started the engine was that it was difficult to start. I pulled many times before it started. Then it seemed to bog down and I will have to rev it up gradually to get it back to full speed again. I had a difficult time getting the line to feed out. It appears the bottom should be spring operated at all times, but the head would get stuck in the up position and nearly impposible to get back out again. The real problem came when I changed the string. 6-1/2 ft. just as the manual said. The line got completely jammed so many ... MoreI bought this unit because of the brand name thinking it has to be good. I should have done some research! I will call the hardware store tommorrow about returning it. Don't risk buying this unit even though it does have some good ratings by some people.
