2nd Stihl chainsaw and love it!

All my other tools are Stihl and they start with normal pulls of the rope and I didn't think it was a good idea to have one that was different. When I see someone buy anything other than Stihl I just shake my head and wonder how they got so far off the right path. It only took me about 4 times of buying a new any-other-brand trimmer every year (or less) in my early 20's before I finally decided to spend only a FEW bucks more to see if what they said about Stihl was true. And I've been a believer ever since! I still have all my original Stihl tools and they all still work (except for the old saw that's about to be serviced). They only need the choice of 5 stars for these ratings because I can't see why anyone would ever need to choose less stars for Stihl anything. My Stihl equipment is probably the best things in my estate that someone will inherit! Because, after all..... they'll still work!

Before I noticed something was wrong, it proceeded to get so hot that it melted the cheap plastic around the clutch assembly and even melted the oil pump housing and oil pump drive, which is also made from cheap plastic. The best part is, you can’t buy parts online and fix this simple stuff yourself. Stihl forces you to go to a dealer so they can make more money off of you. Trusting my local dealer, I took my “fixed” saw back to work and because it was no longer pumping oil, my bar and chain was destroyed. Now I get to forfeit more of my time and take it to the dealer again. Additionally, these are very hard to start the first time because Stihl cheaped out and didn’t install a primer bulb. Further more, there’s zero adjustment on the oiling system. It is what it is. I’d like to be in control of an expensive piece of equipment, so I can take care of it the way I see best. I bought Stihl because of their reputation. Now I’m regretting my purchase and am looking at other brands for a better built saw.

Great when is operational
17 October 2023

For my first Stihl chainsaw i am not overly impressed. I have used it a few times to cut up storm damage trees. The saw has been difficult to get started most time. The chain that came with it is garbage, I have sharpened the chain overtime i begin to cut and dulls very quickly. Certainly not impressed that I appear to have a less common chain size (Micro™ 0.325" pitch 0.050" gauge 68 drive links 23 RM3 68) and am unable to get a replacement without traveling far, or over spending to purchase from an online retailer. If i can get a different bar that uses the more common chain size (Micro™ 0.325" pitch 0.063" gauge 68 drive links 26 RM3 68), would great. but my initial research says no, and also saw someone else if they could switch and was told no

Hard to start

I have owned many chainsaws and this is my first Stihl. I followed the instructions to the letter and I could not get the machine started. I tried repeatedly on the first day that I owned it and then give up figuring it was probably flooded and then attempted to start itthe second day but with the same results. I finally went on YouTube and plug in the name of my chainsaw and it’s model number and pulled up a video on how to start it. After watching the video I followed it exactly and it started just like it should. The difference was a very poor explanation in the instructions that when you choke it you choke it until you get An attempt start. When that happens you move the start lever out of the choke area completely and the press the trigger and move it up just into the start running area for the chainsaw. At that point you crank it with shorts drugs and the fires right up. The problems with the instructions is it’s very vague on what to do after the attempt start. Even one Attempt to start it before moving that lever up to the start position will float the machine and you have to wait it out to get it in a position to try to start it again. They really need to rework the wording on that for just have a video on how to do it it was so simple to follow. I found out after that stihl Does have a video section on various problems with the machine including starting.. I would suggest that they just drop the written portion of the instructions and just put see video with a link to where to go. This would Solvesproblems

After we brought down our wood (all cut with the MS171), the Wood Boss did start AND work as we cut our 8-foot lengths for splitting. It was glorious and fast and made me want to keep on trying (ah, how I was deceived by it working one-time!). Used for 30 minutes as it got the job done that quickly in cutting those 8-foot lengths down.Fast forward to late summer of 2022 and time for the firewood hunt--went up three times in the past two weeks and I started with the MS251 just to see if 2022 would be different and to my utter disbelief, it actually started on our first trip. I started to limb the felled pine (we can only take trees that are already down) and the MS251 immediately started to smoke. I kept going thinking it was a fluke (yes there was bar oil and the chain is basically new) but had to stop as the smoke become more profound and could not take the risk. Ah, the Wood "Boss"...Thankfully I had the trusty MS171 and it started and cut our first loads of wood for this year.I busted out the camera to create a video for Ace to show them the smoke and guess what happened? The MS251 would NOT start again! I was furious. I couldn't even start it to show them the issue. (Of course I started the MS171 right away and showed them the load of wood I had gotten.) I told Ace I wanted to appeal to the warranty (purchased October 1, 2021) and it went nowhere. There is a tag on the saw from Ace saying replace and it will sit there, unused in my shed as a reminder that I will never buy a Stihl chainsaw (or maybe product) again. Yes, the MS171 has been trustworthy and has gotten us all of our wood the last two years, but I need something bigger and faster and actually reliable, but I can tell you it's not the MS251.

I bought the saw a year ago. From the beginning, it was a hard start. The pull rope was near impossible to pull. However, I did eventually get it to start, and did a lot of yard clean-up of fallen limbs. After the season was over, I followed the guidelines and put it up for winter storage, using Stihl's motomix fuel, after running it dry. So, I go to pull it out this spring, and it is impossible to start. I'm thinking I need to overhaul the carb. In the meantime I purchased a different brand from a different dealer. This saw starts like a champ--every time--no matter the grade of fuel; cold start, warm start; no issues whatsoever. It's become my go-to saw.So for now, my MS 251 sits on the shelf, aging, until such time as I get around to do a thorough carb overhaul. ... MoreI bought the saw a year ago. This is unacceptable for a saw that only saw 10-15 hrs of use in one season. I own other Stihl products, and they all run fine; this saw however, has been nothing but frustration.

Bought this 6 months ago. It replaced a Stihl 023 that I had forever. Stihl! What have you done. Everything I loved about my old saw is no more. My number one complaint is safety. One nut to hold the bar on? The first time the chain and bar flew off the saw (after 5 minutes of use), I assumed I had not tightened it enough. The second time the bar and chain flew off I took it back to the store to have their service tech look at it. He spent 20 minutes going over it said everything was fine. He then gave me a full tutorial on using the saw. All of which I was already familiar with. The third and final time the bar and chain flew off it cracked the chain sprocket cover. Now I used this saw maybe 10 times and the bar ONLY flew off 3 times. But you would think with me ... MoreBought this 6 months ago. It replaced a Stihl 023 that I had forever. Stihl! What have you done. Everything I loved about my old saw is no more. But you would think with me stopping use every 10 minutes to make sure the nut is tight would have solved the problem. By the way stopping that frequently is really inconvenient. Add to that the sucker is impossible to start when cold. Not sure if it has to do with the anti vibration factor or not. The engine is attached to springs and when you hold the frame to pull the cord the whole engine moves. So it's a pull to move the engine and on the back end a harder pull to start it. Totally messes up your shoulder. I literally have to bring it in the house from the garage overnight if I want to have any chance of getting it going.I own a lot of Stihl products and normally they are fantastic. This one however should be removed from the lineup.

The easy start system is great.

I bought this saw on 02/09/2023. At the store, the techs had trouble showing me how to adjust the chain. The flip up knob was so tight that they had to use a towel and vice grips to loosen it. After adjusting it, they tightened it up and retried loosening it a few times with no problem. Then, I got to use it on 02/25/2023 for the first time. Cut down 2 trees for a friend. Almost getting finished noticed that the chain was loose. So I went to adjust it. It was not possible to do so. I remembered they had to use a vice grip plyer to loosen it when I bought it, so I decided not to try and loosen it till I took it back to the store and let them do it. Again, they had to use plyers to loosen it. Per the tech pro, I was informed that they ordered new parts for my brand ... MoreI bought this saw on 02/09/2023. So, I'm now waiting for my saw and who knows when Stihl, will get the parts to them for the replacement. Now, having stated the bad experience with that, I have to say that I'm still very happy with the overall performance of the saw. I'm not getting any younger and my old 271 was very hard for me to start. This 251-C is really great in all other aspects. Only time will tell if the bar and chain tightener issue is solved and or corrected. However, gong forward if this problem is solved, I would have to say that I would buy this saw again.

The purchase of this ms251 worked out so well! I immediately went out and bought an MS 311 to gain a bit more bar length. I have shaken off the painstaking tendencies of other less then ideal brands with both of these Stihl saws. Works and cuts so smooth with the square cut chain and light04 bar. This goes the same with the MS 311 and the light 06 bar as well. Both Start immediately and functions fast and trouble free. Hats off to Stihl for these products within this class of saw. Both need bigger dogs out of the box is the only downfall. STIHL, put some adequate dogs on these please!!
