Story by Robert McKee Paperback 1999
Structure is Character. Characters are what they do. Story events impact the characters and the characters impact events. Actions and reactions create revelation and insight, opening the door to a meaningful emotional experience for the audience. Story is what elevates a film, a novel, a play, or teleplay, transforming a good work into a great one. Movie-making in particular is a collaborative endeavour – requiring great skill and talent by the entire cast, crew and creative team – but the screenwriter is the only original artist on a film. Everyone else – the actors, directors, cameramen, production designers, editors, special effects wizards and so on – are interpretive artists, trying to bring alive the world, the events and the characters that the writer has invented and created. Robert McKee’s STORY is a comprehensive and superbly organized exploration of all elements, from the basics to advanced concepts. It is a practical course, presenting new perspectives on the craft of storytelling, not just for the screenwriter but for the novelist, playwright, journalist and non-fiction writers of all types.

I bought this while I was doing a 'How to write a novel' course and my tutor recommended it to me. I wasn't disappointed, it is very easy to understand and covers many things from, structure, setting, genre, character and meaning and that's just the start. I found it an excellent help and it is broken down into sections which makes it even easier to read. I think Robert McKee does a great job in explaining what is a difficult task for many writer's.

I've only just breached the surface here, but from what I've read so far, I can tell this book is going on my permanent writing reference shelf. McKee knows his stuff and how to communicate it. I originally purchased this title as a supplementary resource suggested by Neil Gaiman's masterclass in storytelling, figuring if someone of his stature and experience found it useful, I might too. And I will be forever grateful that I did.

I bought 'Story'having looked through many different types book. What I want to understand is how to produce stories that are professional, interesting, and well constructed. This book is well written, professional and will give you a good insight. Although it focuses on movie writing, it's well worth a read for any type of story.
THis is THE text for any writer screen or other - it is excellent for telling the story. I am an experienced writer and it is still very helpful. This was recommended to me by two well known authors - it is worth every penny
Whether you're trying to break into screenwriting or just improving your chosen field this book will take you to a higher level.
Robert McKee is a master of the craft, and Story gives you all of the insight of his legendary three-day screenwriting seminar. A must for any kind of writer, it succinctly deconstructs the timeless and universal elements of storytelling in a way that will help writers understand how to strip the wasterful expository writing that too often bogs down a story and use only scenes that advance a story, give it meaning and hold the audience's attention.
I have read quiet a few books on writing, watched lots of YouTube videos, and nothing has ever broken down the elements of story in a way that was so easy to understand before. Using popular films (and coming at story from a screenwriters point of view), this book nevertheless helped me understand concepts I have struggled with, and showed me why stories are often told in certain ways. Added to that the book was easy to read, and interesting throughout.
I bought this book for a creative writing course I am doing and it is very useful. There are some great tips which are not only helpful for screenwriting but for writing I. General. It is also an interesting read.
I'm a writer and this book is excellent. It's the best book about WRITING I've ever read ( and I read maybe 20). I don't need other books no more and it's what I like - one good book to know all writing process questions. I'm happy, very happy! I feel I can go through. I can be very good writer and do my best. I'm not writing in English.
