Having gone through painful skin cancer surgery on my face twice, I finally learned the hard way the need to protect my skin from the harmful effects of the sun. The Sunday Afternoon Ultra Adventure hat has become my top choice for times when I am out in the sun for longer periods of time. Baseball caps will protect your scalp, but not the ears and neck. I can't tell you how many seniors I saw in the waiting room of the skin cancer doctor with bandages on their ears. The Ultra Adventure hat shields your ears, neck and face from sunburn. It actually has a crease that allows you to fold the hat and tuck in your waist band without mishaping the hat whatsoever. As an added bonus, the hat allows you to store your sunglasses without fear of them falling out. I plan on attending an airshow soon and will be out in the full sun for three days, so having a good hat that I enjoy wearing and offers full protection was imperative. There are other styles of Sunday Afternoon hats that would do the job, but I felt this one was best suited for my needs.

I misplaced my originally purchased version of this hat. Since it folded flat, I always kept it in my backpack, and I wore it frequently. As advertised, it was lightweight. I loved the huge brim. The floppy back panel was light enough that the breeze generated by a slow walk was sufficient to keep it from sticking to the back of my neck. The surprise was that it was also good for keeping rain off my face and glasses. So when I lost that hat, of course I purchased a replacement immediately, and the replacement is just as good as the original. There are no equivalents for this hat.

Taking one star off because it makes you look dorky! But, otherwise, it's a great hat. Ta-daa. Now, the back ends are weighted and stay down. Plus, it's easy to unstick the magnets when you want to wash the hat.

I've tried a lot of safari caps in my 30 years of ultrarunning. On most of them the cape comes too far around the side and blocks some of your peripheral vision. Fortunately, the Ultra Adventure Hat has an ideal cape and does not block your peripheral vision. It feels comfortable and it has a good chin strap. The only flaw with this hat is that when the wind speed is 10 knots or more the flap starts flapping very noisily. It's not quite jackhammer loud, but it's loud enough to be very annoying. They could probably solve this issue by adding two mesh vents to the flap to let some of the wind pass through.
I've had this hat for years, probably 7-8 now, and have worn it on 90% of my regular hikes. I always machine-wash it with other performance clothes (in a mesh bag and using special sports wash) and then dry it flat so the brim is straightened. It has held up amazingly well for a hat that is supposed to be hand-wash only... I picked up a second one several years ago in case the original one is not usable anymore but it's been sitting in the closet. This hat is amazing in windy conditions, the only one that won't flap around. I rather wear this hat than a ball cap to protect my cheeks from the sun (where I have had suspicious looking moles removed). And when it rains it even fits under the hood of my rain jacket or poncho and the brim provides some extra protection ... MoreI've had this hat for years, probably 7-8 now, and have worn it on 90% of my regular hikes. And when it rains it even fits under the hood of my rain jacket or poncho and the brim provides some extra protection for my eyes and glasses. I don't think it looks dorky at all--it looks smart. Best hiking hat ever. I've tried other fine hats but always come back to this one for longer hikes and backpacking adventures because I know for sure it will perform. The photos are from last month, with the old hat. In cold weather, I wear a buff underneath to keep my ears warm. The hat is adjustable so a slightly larger size works well for all conditions.
I cannot live without this hat! I’ve been wearing them daily for over 8 years. I have two. One is for dirty/rugged activities like backpacking, sailing and gardening. The other is for clean/cute activities like walking, sightseeing, or going to the farmer’s market. The foldability is great for traveling, honking, or even just to stick it in a pocket when you go inside, like at a restaurant. The chin strap is great, and the glasses holder works perfectly. Tip: switch your sunglasses and reading glasses from nose to brim when you’re outside and need to look at your phone or a map and compass..
I'm a ball cap and beanie wearer who doesn't think he looks good in sun hats, but I decided I wanted to be better about sun protection. From the images, this is a decidedly dorky looking hat, but having tried on a bunch in store this one was the least objectionable. Maybe it's because it screams pragmatism whereas most of the full brim ones aspire to a level of fashionableness they can't reach on my head? I wear the Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure hat proudly around town and on the trail. I receive knowing nods from others who similarly fear the Sun God.It's light weight, foldable into nothing (easy to store in luggage or a pocket), cinches well in the back and with the drawstring, the back flap covers my neck (but will blow around with wind, which is the major ... MoreI'm a ball cap and beanie wearer who doesn't think he looks good in sun hats, but I decided I wanted to be better about sun protection. Good buy.
I bought my first Sunday Afternoons hat 12 years ago and it is still going strong but it is getting signs of wear and has paint on it. Plus I got tired of forgetting to bring it so I ordered 2 more so I could stash them at work and in my car. Will probably order a couple more to keep in my suitcases because I have left home without my hat several times.I live in Nevada and it's sunny all the time. I bought the Ultra Adventure because it is the closest to my original hat which must have been discontinued. The original hat was a completely foldable pocket hat that zipped into it's own pouch built in the neck flap. Then Ultra Adventure is perfect for just about everywhere. Lightweight and vented, the neck string comes in handy with our afternoon winds. It's still easy to tuck in your pocket when you don't need it.I will close my review with "the time I lost my hat in Jamaica"..........I was on a cruise and the first stop was Jamaica. I was on shuttle bus going around the island and decided to jump off at stop unexpectedly. As the bus pulled away I realized my Sunday Afternoons pocket hat was on the bus. I jumped on the next shuttle and said "follow that bus!" I told the driver what happened, he got on the radio and eventually found the other bus driver. We met up back at the cruise port and I was reunited with my hat. It was a 2 hour delay out of my island time but I got to meet a couple of very cool bus drivers.
Love my Ultra Adventure Hat! I use it for daily walks in my sunny climate and for far flung travels. (Recently got compliments from friends in Spain and Denmark.) I like the adjustment strap in the back and the chin sting. Really like that it folds up so it can go in my day pack while I keep wandering after the sun goes down. I've washed mine several times, drying it carefully by laying it flat on some newspaper. This hat deserves its high ratings and good reputation. SundayAfternoons has great customer service too- very responsive.
Started the Colorado trail in a big box store brimmed hat by modifying the back with Velcro to keep it out of the way. After 200 miles of trying to figure out where to stash it without taking off my pack I found the adventure pro hat and OMG! A foldable brim hat that was SOooooo comfortable and stashed easily. The flap in the back was incredibly light and yet stayed put to keep the sun off. When not needed it stayed stashed up in the crown without ever creeping back down, even as I took it on and off. The super smooth and easy back adjustment to tighten and loosen the fit was an unexpected luxury as it only took one hand. Love it and have bought 5 as gifts.
