I have an iPhone and iPad Pro- but guess what, I still went for this Microsoft device for work/home laptop use, and am glad I did.Familiar office apps. Familiar way of working. I also hear that AI stuff is thought to require more RAM going forward- well at least Microsoft says devices need to have at least 16GB of ram to run Microsoft copilot - you can verify that online. So would you really choose an 8GB device as something that will be future proof?Battery life is also very very similar to MacBook Air now when it used to be far behind, and like MacBook it also charges with USBC port (how cool is that?- we can use the same USB charger as our phone to charge it!)It’s personal choice but I went for base model larger 15” screen in platinum. I went to see them first in person in Currys which I found very useful. Whilst the 15” come only in black and silver, the smaller 13” screen ones are more portable by being lighter too, and come in even cooler colours like the blue one. But I chose the larger screen to interact with.If you want to look up an alternative laptop with very similar specs and looks (which I didn’t go for in the end but looks very very good, look up SAMSUNG Galaxy Book4 Edge laptop. Also comes in a v nice blue and slightly better screen- though I still preferred this Microsoft model in person.Very happy indeed.

The keys are spaced evenly with good responsiveness. The back-lit keys are also a major benefit. You don’t get a number pad included however, so just be aware you would need to use a number-pad or the use the number keys towards the top of the keyboard.Ports – Microsoft opted for their proprietary charger which is the Surface power supply. I worry how well this will hold up long-term as it seems a little flimsy. To my surprise however, the Surface Laptop has two USB-C and 1 USB A port. The USB-C ports are also capable of charging the device and displaying dual monitors since the ports are USB4 ports.Battery – I’ve been testing the battery for a little over a week and a half by listening to music, typing emails, uploading files and working in the Microsoft Office suite. I can attest that the battery life on this laptop is one of the best I’ve seen on a Windows laptop so far. I’ve gotten a day in a half worth of battery life while performing multiple tasks without needing a charge.Screen – This version comes with a beautiful 15 inch capable of HDR touchscreen with thin bezels. The screen is glossy which poses no issues for me. The dynamic refresh rate with up 120Hz feels silky smooth when scrolling through websites. This can be disabled in the Windows settings as well. Windows Hello login is instantaneous even in low light conditions. It rivals my expensive webcam with the Windows Hello login feature.AI features – Ive messed around with the Copilot features in Microsoft Paint and messed around with the webcam features with Windows studio Effects. The webcam and mic are really good. The clarity of the webcam is very good and the mic sounds really good. Having the dedicated Copilot button is a plus. I’ve thrown all sorts of questions at Copilot and it’s a neat feature. Not too sure if this would be the main reason to purchase this laptop however.Some areas I think is the reason to purchase this laptop are:Ram starting at 16gb.Wi-Fi 7 supportedCoPilotSuperior battery life.Premium look and feel.Snapdragon Elite X processor.Touchscreen with 120Hz capability.I think that Microsoft stepped their game with this device. This device will probably set the industry standard with the battery, performance level, and overall specs on the 7th generation Surface laptop. This laptop does come with a steep price tag to match for a Windows machine, but with all the functionality, it may be well worth it for most. I really like the steps Microsoft is taking with its latest batch of premium laptops, and can’t wait to see what’s ahead when all the Copilot features are available in the near future.

I have spent the last week setting up and evaluating this very interesting and unique machine, the ARM based Microsoft Surface CoPilot+. Combining a week’s intensive use with watching many YouTube videos and numerous podcasts and reviews, I can say that this machine seems to boil down to two main considerations. First, it's a new type of Windows machine that runs on an ARM processor, which is a departure from the usual Intel or AMD machines. Before getting this AI laptop, I got a subscription to Microsoft CoPilot PRO, which integrates well with my Office programs, and I've had a lot of fun using Microsoft 'Designer' to create cool graphics for social media and emails and using AI to look at spreadsheets and whip up PowerPoints. What’s new for AI here is this machine is the first to have a built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) chip, which is designed to take the load off the main processor when the laptop is running AI processes. At the moment, some of the graphic functions like Designer for graphics and the language translation use the NPU chip to boost processing speed, and there are some video conferencing filters that have been around a while - but more significant is the tremendous potential for apps and ‘small models’ that will use this onboard neural chip to great advantage. Having an on-board Neural Processing Unit (NPU) chip is a new thing and developers are cranking out AI apps and AI program updates on a daily basis. I am looking forward to more and more of these program updates and apps to become available to really help the AI functions of the CoPilot+ show its capabilities. This is about as “future proof” as you can get for the surge in AI capabilities at the moment. Having the built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) will help speed up some of the AI process, allow use of AI applications and plug-ins, and provide many AI functions even when the machine is offline.Now, to put the AI aside and evaluate the Surface CoPilot+ as a laptop – Microsoft Surface machines have a reputation for being well engineered and this machine looks good and feels very sturdy in the hand. The edges are nicely chamfered and easy on the hands. This machine is well-built, with a backlit keyboard, solid hinge, and a very nice 120MHz screen. The haptic touchpad is wonderful. My first haptic touchpad, and this is a whole new experience as I really never liked touchpads until this one... very smooth, responsive, adjustable, and clicks anywhere! I can also use an inexpensive capacitive stylus for basic drawing on the screen when using OneNote or playing with the AI graphics. This 15” machine has a micro-SD slot and first thing i did was pop in a 512GB card for game files, software repository, and cloud storage. Long battery life is one of the main benefits of the ARM-based machine—it lasts much longer than my other laptop. My experience is easily 2x to 3x the battery life of my i5 laptop (which just got a brand-new battery). Another very nice feature of this ARM based machine is 'instant on' when you open the lid to resume work – the laptop instantly jumps back to life every time and doesn't drain the battery when asleep. The more I use this laptop the more I appreciate how nice it is to not worry about shutting the lid when I step away for a moment or pack up to go to the next location and know that I can pop the lid and go right back to work without having to wait for the computer to wake up. With the facial recognition enabled (and it works very well) you don’t have to put in a PIN code or password – the laptop recognizes you and is instantly ready to pick up where you left off. Really nice!As for gaming, it has been well established that this isn't a hardcore gaming machine, but don’t sell the ARM laptop short - it can handle many fun and modern games. It runs all the normal programs for office work, school, photo and light video editing without any issues. It's fast, lasts an incredibly long time on battery, and doesn't keep me waiting.In conclusion, if you want a well-built, long-lasting laptop that's quiet, cool in your lap, and on the cutting edge of AI, the Surface CoPilot+ is a great choice.Greetings from Central Georgia and Happy 4th of July!banjo

This laptop also features Windows Hello facial recognition, and functions very well, even when I switch between glasses and no glasses. Windows operates very smoothly and is very responsive. The screen quality looks very good and gives quite the clear image, and video resolution Is very smooth. The colors and pixels are very vibrant and pop.The main feature of the surface laptop is the co-pilot AI system. There is quite a bit to pick up on with how much you can do with it. But it has been quite pleasurable for me to operate. I was genuinly iffy about having an AI system, but in using the co-pilot software, it has really helped my productivity.Overall, the surface laptop has been an incredible work and person laptop. The business integration of co-pilot has really eased my daily tasks and has generated more work flow. While you can't really game on it, it makes up for that with a super long battery life, the super slim design, the lightweight portability, and ease of operation. It is truly an enjoyable laptop to have a definitely recommend.

This processor uses the ARM instruction set, like the CPUs in virtually all modern smartphones and tablets, instead of the traditional Intel-compatible instrution set. The advantage to this is that ARM CPUs have generally prioritized efficient designs, given their use in small battery-powered devices. This isn't the first Surface device to have an ARM-based CPU from Qualcomm, but the Snapdragon X is the first such CPU to match or exceed the compute performance of Intel and AMD laptop CPUs. On top of that, Snapdragon X integrates a powerful "Neural Processing Unit" (NPU) that meets Microsoft's criteria for providing some new "AI" features under the Copilot+ branding.If you ask Microsoft, the Copilot+ features are the story here. Microsoft has been eager to push their AI features (to the point of adding the first new key to PC keyboards - a key to invoke Copilot - since the Start key), and these new features are why they're requiring a minimum power level for the NPU. The bundled Paint program has a new "Cocreator" gimmick that tries to generate art from a text prompt that matches a drawing you already have made. There are some promising new global features as well. There are some nice "Studio Effects" that can be applied to the front-facing camera video (think lighting and advanced background blur effects). There is also a "Live Captions" service that can add automatic captions for any audio, right on screen - including translation of detected foreign language (the subtitles worked well in English, but I couldn't yet test the translation with any native speakers of a foreign language). Despite the the built-in NPU, these features still require an active Internet connection. (The Windows Task Manager now shows NPU activity, and I could see activity on it when using them, so there's definitely some advantage to the NPU.) Overall, these features are nice perks, though perhaps not reason enough on their own to specifically get a Copilot+ computer like the Surface Laptop 7.In my opinion, though, it's the Snapdragon X as a whole, not just the NPU, that is the story. After acquiring a startup working on high-performance ARM CPUs, Qualcomm has produced one of the most powerful CPUs for the PC market, period. Microsoft has been bringing ARM-based Windows devices to the market for years now, but they have never seriously challenged Intel and AMD CPUs in performance. Snapdragon X changes that, while maintaining class-leading power efficiency. This performance is not just theoretical, either. The Surface Laptop 7 is the snappiest-feeling Windows laptop I've ever used, and the battery life is terrific.Of course, performance would be meaningless if it can't run the software I need. To that end, Windows now includes new emulation technology for running software compiled for Intel-compatible CPUs on ARM CPUs like the Snapdragon X. A number of the programs I use regularly still don't have ARM-native versions, but ran pretty much flawlessly on the Surface Laptop 7. Honestly, if it weren't for the Task Manager's details view, I probably couldn't tell what was ARM-native and what wasn't. I did sense some minor performance hiccups with emulated Intel programs - such as slightly slower start-up, or minor pauses after starting the program. The issues were minor enough that I couldn't even say for sure I didn't imagine them because I knew the programs were being emulated. I didn't need to rely on any custom hardware drivers, or any unusual software that might have compatibility issues, so be aware that your experience with Intel emulation could be different.The one area where the Surface Laptop 7 did not perform well compared to other laptops I've owned was when playing video games. The Snapdragon X supports Microsoft's "Automatic Super Resolution" (Auto SR) feature that upscales graphics from games running in a lower resoultion. Theoretically, this allows the Snapdragon X to punch above its GPU's weight when playing games. Microsoft has already identified some games that work well with this feature, and those games will automatically use it when they launch. For other games, you can manually enable it. I tried out three different games - Diablo III, God of War, and Baldur's Gate 3. All of these games needed Intel emulation to run. Diablo III ran, but with poor performance (even though it's a somewhat old game). Enabling Auto SR improved performance, but couldn't make up for the very low resolution required. God of War is one of the games for which Auto SR is automatically enabled. The graphics looked good (despite some stuttering when it first loads), but unforutunately, it also wasn't stable and would lock up completely. Lastly, Baldur's Gate 3 ran well initially, and with good quality - no tweaking needed - but it also crashed to the desktop periodically for me. I'm hopeful the stability will improve with GPU driver updates (or perhaps I can find more optimal settings). For now, if light gaming is very important to you, I would recommend looking at different models (or even consider this laptop along with a dedicated gaming handheld!).Besides the good performance, the "feel" of the Surface Laptop 7 is top-notch. The construction feels rigid. The keyboard and trackpad are the best I've used outside of my MacBook Pro. I really like the high resolution screen; it's not OLED or mini-LED, but I never found myself wishing it was using one of those technologies. And since this comes from Microsoft, there's no additional preinstalled "bloatware" installed on top of Windows. I'm pleased to know that this computer received a high repairability score from iFixit (even though Microsoft doesn't officially claim the computer is user-repairable or upgradable). Finally, I'm also attaching a picture of this laptop compared to one of its prime competitors (a 16" MacBook Pro); the Surface Laptop 7 is surprisingly smaller in every dimension, although the screen is not too significantly different in size.I'm not sure what more there is to say about this computer. It's the best Windows laptop I've used, and I think most people would love using it as their primary laptop (so long as gaming expectations aren't too high). Microsoft has made the jump to a new CPU architecture pretty seamless, and the performance and efficiency of the Snapdragon X set a new bar that Intel and AMD will hopefully answer with similarly impressive chips to drive all laptop computers forward.

It helps that the RAM speeds reach up to 8,448 MHz. With 16GB I don't think I'll ever need more RAM on this laptop, especially with how optimized everything is becoming. I was even able to play Genshin Impact on the lowest settings, granted it wasn't the best experience but it is cool to know that I can play it if I wanted to. I was able to reach 3500 MB/s read speed and 2500 Mb/s write speed on tests that I ran for the SSD. The front-facing camera is about average quality, and great for video conferencing.The new Copilot AI feature on this laptop is really cool and fun! It is able to summarize large bodies of text with important details, it can create images and edit them with fun filters, work like a next-level search engine, and it's able to do so much more so I'm excited to spend time with this laptop figuring it all out. I'm not too sure about how well AI will be incorporated into everyday life, but it is fun to play with and it seems really useful so far.The only thing I'm not fond of is the keyboard. It's kind of mushy and not satisfying to type on. I love a clacky keyboard. That said, I LOVE the angled magnetic charger. It doesn't take up any of the USB ports and is so nice when it just snaps into place. 10/10 to the design team.Attached are photos of the tests I ran. I tried asking it a bunch of questions and it answered most of them. There were a couple of questions it responded that it couldn’t answer but to be honest they were rather obscure questions. You can get the answer to them on the Internet, however. I tried asking it to show me photos of famous people and got it right most of the time although there were a few popular names where it showed me the wrong person in the pictures. Not sure why. I tried doing some photo editing and got mixed results. I took a photo of my dog and changed the background to various scenes. It did fine except for right around the edges of my dog where it couldn’t differentiate my dog from the background. You can also change the style of the photo from a predetermined selection. It did a decent job here but I’m not sure of any real purpose to it and your selection is limited. I asked it to create images of a few different things. They all turned out to be cartoon like pictures that you could find on the Internet. There is an NPU but I’m not sure how to use it since it seemed like everything I tried was done by the server. Photoshop uses AI and maybe that is what uses the NPU but unfortunately, I don’t have a copy of it to try. Overall, Copilot+ was an interesting toy to play with but didn’t offer me anything that the Internet doesn’t already.The laptop has the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite CPU with an emulator for Intel based software. This is where problems began. Not all software is compatible and won’t run on it. I installed Office 365 and while all the apps run, Outlook which is the app I use the most would only allow me to use the “new” version of it which I didn’t like. I have always used the original look and feel version, but this is not an option for this laptop even though my other laptops allowed for it. The button on the GUI was there to switch to the original Outlook look and feel but it didn’t work. While some software worked fine, others did not. Norton Antivirus didn’t work which I already had a subscription to so I was stuck using Windows Defender, which may be good enough. I also found that CompanionLink didn’t work which is something I use all the time. Since this laptop uses new technology, I hope that the software companies are working on versions that use the Arm processor natively but that is not the case yet.Battery life was excellent. Doing email, Internet, Copilot, YouTube, office applications, and a few other types of work, I was able to get 15 hours of battery life out of it. It uses the usual Surface charger with the magnetic connector which is great and especially if someone trips over the wire. The connector just pulls out without even moving the laptop. One thing that is missing is a light to indicate that it is charging and another light to indicate that it is on. Unless it is on, you have no idea when it is done charging. Also, when shutting down the laptop, you don’t know when it has completely finished. A bit of a miss here.The keyboard and touchpad work great and feel very nice. The keyboard is very easy to type on without making a lot of mistakes. The laptop has a slight wedge design which makes typing on the keyboard even better. It has backlighting which looks great and is necessary in the dark and even when it is light in the room. Just keep it on all the time. There is a dedicated key to open the Copilot app and another key on the keyboard to power the laptop on. The touchpad also feels nice and works precisely for dragging and tapping. There are the usual touchpad buttons that also work well and provide slight haptic feedback which make it feel even more precise. I prefer using tapping instead of the buttons but that is just my personal preference. I am very impressed by the keyboard and touchpad and is probably the best I have seen on a laptop.The laptop uses Wi-Fi 7 and is the first device and chance I have had to use with my Wi-Fi 7 router. I have had no problems connecting to it and staying connected to it. I’m able to get a speed test of around 1Gbps download speed in comparison to my other 6E laptops which gave me around 700Mbps so there is definitely an improvement here.The sound quality is pretty typical for a laptop. The sound is very tinny which is probably the result of small speakers. I have heard laptops that sound better though. The quality of the screen is what you would expect from it. It has great colors and brightness. It also has a lot of glare which is a little disappointing if you have a lot of direct light shining on it or are using it outside in the sun, although the screen is bright enough in this case. It does not have an OLED screen so don’t expect that kind of quality but to be honest, I prefer laptops without the OLED screen to prevent the possibility of burn-in.It uses Windows Hello as its login security. This is very fast and works even in the darkest of rooms. I have not had a case yet where it didn’t recognize me or failed to work, and I had to use the pin to log in.The connections are very minimal but probably have all you need in most cases. There is the power/docking station connector, one USB-A, and 2 USB-C connectors. All of them work perfectly but that is all you get.The laptop is very thin and has a slight wedge which is good for using the keyboard. It is a little heavier than I would have expected but not too heavy to easily carry around with you. It is just a little surprising. It is also very pleasant to look at. As mentioned before, the build quality is impeccable.In the end, I would say there are a ton of great things to say about this laptop, but software compatibility is not one of them and that is why I would unfortunately recommend an Intel or AMD laptop over this one or wait until there is more software that supports it which I am sure will be the case over time. If you want to play around with Copilot+, don’t mind the new look and feel of Outlook, and want an extremely long battery life, this would be the way to go.

I have not had a single issue using any downloaded programs that are not built on ARM yet and things have worked flawlessly. As Microsoft promised all of the ARM apps downloaded also are a joy and breeze to use.Microsoft has taken huge strides with Co-Pilot and this is one area that is not only in the name of the laptop, but where the computer really shines and is fun to use. The new keyboard has a co-pilot button that opens up the program so you can start to interact with AI. I have been using this multiple times a day and will continue to do so. It is an asset that I am so elated to see Microsoft push. Using AI for other things throughout the device has also been a breeze. Making a drawing and having AI put a touch on it has been a lot of fun. Using AI through the office suite of apps is also extremely useful and beneficial.I don't say this lightly but out of all the new generations of computers that I have ever owned or had the pleasure to try, none of them excite me or prove to me just how much of a leap this one has taken. Microsoft has created one of the strongest laptops on the market and I think in the next few years (assuming Microsoft continues to build off this) the Surface Laptops will take over the market. Well done, Microsoft....this thing is IMPRESSIVE.
