I don't find myself struggling to read the display in daylight as the display contrast can be adjusted (range 1 - 15). I kept mine at 13, but when you press for the backlight, you'd still be confused by other icons appearing on the screen. The backlight is okay for something from 2012-ish. It's green but not as powerful as the ones you get from ~ahem~ with Electro Luminescence. But like the moniker/name suggests, it's stealth so why should the backlight glow so much, right? As with the ABC features;Altimeter : I can't comment on this because I don't use it at all. But you do have to remember that the data is based on the sensor intended for barometric readings, so it determines your altitude based on air pressure readings around you.Barometer: I compare it with two other watches with ABC functions - names withheld or this review won't get published :( . The readings are consistent, with very negligible value differences. But the barometric graph representation on this one in my opinion is so much better to read compared to the two aforementioned. Having storm alarm is super handy if you need one!Compass: Again I compared with the other two, they all worked great and I personally think it's a reliable compass but having an actual compass is better. This compass would be useful as a backup. The only thing with this one is after a while when you are in a different location, you do need to calibrate the compass to get better readings, and doing calibration on this one is so easy! Just go into compass mode and turn the watch 360 degrees while keeping it level.Someone complained this not having a 24 hour option, it does have the option for it.No options for hourly chime. As far as tones goes, they're only settable for button guides and alarm. Which makes it useful for stealth. The button lock feature is a useful feature that even expensive ~ ahem ~ digital shock resistant watches don't have. The stopwatch doesn't have split time feature so you should look for that somewhere else. The countdown timer is up to 99 minutes and 59 seconds. The sunrise and sunset times are only applicable to major cities. So for something like this in 2012, it was a great watch. For current times, you're just limiting yourself purely for style if you still want this and hoping it to match on par with something else in the market nowadays.Don't get me wrong though, it's still a good reliable ABC watch and I use it everyday and there are times I keep it as a backup to know the barometric readings & temperature around me while rocking my other ~ahem~ shock resistant watches.P/S: I first came to know about this watch way before seeing the hero (name withheld) using it in The Eq********* but it was out of reach back then. Now that I'm hoarding for watches and saw the movie again, I just had to get it and with its shortcomings, I take it as it is and I still really love this Suunto Core All Black.

Some people complained about display (not easy to read), but I do not have this issue at all.If you want sportwatch tracking heart rate, routes, ect. go for Garmin (due to better app), but if you need something simple, this is the way to go.

Watch is great, stylish and comfortable. Though I bought for the outdoors, I find myself often wearing on a day-to-day basis . The altimeter is reliable (when calibrated) barometer functions well, and little add-ins like sunrise/sunset time a nice bonus. I'm not particularly kind to gear, and have been wearing this frequently- it still looks like it's fresh out of the box.My big gripe is the compass, which I've tried calibrating under a number of different scenarios and has never once read reliably or even remotely close to the appropriate direction. As an ABC watch: A+ grade for A&B functions, but a solid F for C.

This watch has been great so far, I've had it for several months of off and on use. This version as with the rest could use a refresh to make the screen better and possibly solar or something but as it is currently its a great watch that people have used for a long time for both civilian and military use. The watch by todays standards is hard to read and the buttons don't inspire confidence but work and not that big of a deal to me as I can see the screen and no buttons have gotten stuck. I also have the core alpha stealth (their newer version made in Finland) and the quality of that product is noticeable buttons are better finishing seems nicer. the core series is a good dependable watch and after years of being used its still going. This was a gift so i won't comment on fit/design as i did not choose it. On a purely technical standpoint, I have a huge problems with this watch. Firstly , I can not understand why alto/baro have separate screens - you must to go to settings and pick one or other, you can not easily check both in the same "scroll". Second, the compass literally never works correctly - no clue why, no magnets/phones etc to mess with it, just seriously can't make up its mind and it is very annoying to try and reset (i've tried 4x now, and gave up). Last "outdoor thing" - the altitude/diving functions are berserk! I have set it literally at sea level 3x and when i leave move up or go down it will show insane numbers like 57m or -12m immediately. I went up a hill and it picks some insane number and starts climbing from there.. Again, makes no sense. Maybe my watch has some serious hardware flaws. I am very disappointed, especially because it's a gift from my mother-in-law so I don't want to disappoint her, but this watch really bites at the moment. I guess i'll find a dealer and try to sort out the issue.

Initial impression
30 January 2022

Bought mine less than 24 hours ago and here are my initial impressions:The black screen is tough to see in low light, as many reviews have noted. There are contrast settings you can adjust to help improve this, but it has a good backlight. Just push a button. In normal lighting it's clear and readable. It's packed with features that are very useful for the outdoors, especially hiking/trekking. I specifically wanted an ABC watch that didn't require recharging and didn't suffer battery drain from the active features, and would also provide storm warnings based on the barometric pressure. I carry a Garmin handheld GPS when backpacking, so I wasn't looking for more than what the Core offers. There are a bunch of really good YouTube instructional videos for the Core. ... MoreBought mine less than 24 hours ago and here are my initial impressions:The black screen is tough to see in low light, as many reviews have noted. I highly recommend checking them out. The quick guide that comes with the watch is only just enough to get you going with the basics. This watch has been around for quite a while (a good sign) so there's a lot of owners who've already done the work.I find it to be super comfortable on my wrist. There are other straps to choose from on Suunto's website if you don't like the basic Core strap that comes with it. The replacements are pretty pricey, though.

I've had the core all black watch for nearly 5 years now. It's comfortable and you don't really need to worry about battery life - the battery's easily replaced and lasts for over a year.As an ABC watch, it has its issues though. In a city environment, the compass really struggles to track which way is north - when staying in Cambridge and only needed to go 1k north on foot through the city centre, this watch was definitely not fit for purpose. Suunto Core Watch Review June 2022
13 June 2022

The watch works well but has an issue with the compass as it doesn't read correctly after set up. There is no manual, just some you tube videos that aren't super helpful. The elevation is is generally close but not spot on like i was hoping. Knowing the elevation is key when I hunt. The compass is a pain and needs to be reset a lot. Since it's military black, reading the information during the day is fair but not as bold like it's shown on the videos. The wrist band holds up well but since it is rubber, it tends to build up sweat. I live in AZ and it's hot so I take it off a lot to wipe my wrist off.

Watch dial: Beware if you cannot see in the dark
9 January 2023

While I appreciate the design and look, I had to return the watch as the menu and buttons are confusing and not intuitive. I spent the best part of 3 hours setting it up and trying to understand how to navigate. However, the biggest issue is screen visibility. Not clear why I need a flashlight to see the dial, as it was extremely dim and working the options to increase contrast made it look like the first edition of Timex digital watches! Maybe if I was in a covert mission to land on a beachhead at night, it would work better. Just need to the dial in the daylight.I picked a Garmin watch instead and had it running in 15 minutes, with gps!

Needless to say this will be my last Suunto core unless they fix the QC. The buttons in particular the ones on the right hand side are the weak spot, they get non responsive or go haywire. All but one watch failed at the buttons. This Core lasted exactly one year. and this was a low use year. No hunting trips, some BC skiing, some resort days, and a ton of office time . The QC and durability has decreased with every watch. the first watch lasted three years, on of which was a deployment in afghanistan, That watch was bulletproof, the band lasted a solid 1.5 years, now an average band will last 6-8 months ( just buy a few off amazon and put a new one of before any big adventure going through the warranty process is generally not worth you time). Now I ride a desk most days and the watch sees very little actual stress compared to my early years using them and the seam to break a higher rate. At this point I feel that i can't trust my life to this piece of gear anymore. When i go into the backcountry, i feel like I have to carry a second watch.Said to say but unless this watch at least 2 years i will be moving on from the core, honestly probably away from suunto, as i either only get lemons for the last 5 years or quality has dropped that much. Sorry to see a once great product get reduced to a gimmick.
