Absolutely love this NAS. I have upgraded from a DS916+ to this, and added and en extra 2 x 8TB HDD's to the other 4, the migration was seamless with no problems at all. Adding each HDD took 12 hours each so that shows the speed, on my DS916+ it took around 27 hours to add an 8TB HDD. I use it for streaming content in Plex and storing about 200,000 photos as well as files for my business. It has been installed a few months now and has given zero issues as we now expect from Synology products. I have installed a Samsung 16Gb stick of DDR4, which it should really have installed as default, 4Gb RAM is a bit bad on such a good unit.

Pros: compact and appears well built, DSM 7.0 interface is easy to useCons: Additional camera licenses are expensive. For RAM upgrades you need to use Synology branded RAM even though its not any different than that commercially available elsewhere but will cost you over twice the price.

Great unobtrusive little NAS unit. Windows 10 recognition via Explorer could be easier to setup.

HDD/SDD Compatibility
20 April 2022

I have over 40 Synology NAS units installed in the field and this is one of 2 units I am disappointed in. The HDD and SSDs MUST be SYNOLOGY they are not compatible with any other drives. Before purchasing this unit make sure you are getting the right HDD/SDDs or you will be disappointed. B&H was great with swapping the drives for compatible ones.

Major hard drive compatibility problems and vendor lock-in
10 December 2021

I've been a Synology fan for many years so I didn't hesitate to upgrade to the DS3622xs+ and throw 12 Seagate IronWolf Pro drives in it to keep my photos safe. After all, it has some pretty great specs including 10GbE. But to my surprise, the NAS complained that the drives were "unverified" and needed to be replaced. While I was able to create a RAID 10 volume, the volume was in a permanent "critical" state and refused to use SMART data. I tested pulling a drive to see if it would automatically rebuild using a hot spare, and it didn't seem to work either. Upon further research, I learned that Synology has changed their NASes starting with this model to only support their own Synology branded hard drives, which apparently are rebadged Toshiba drives. There's a lot of outrage online about this. This vendor lock-in, which I didn't know prior to purchasing it, was just gutting to hear about. It adds substantial overall cost to the NAS and makes this model not worth it. I'm really sad that my decade-long love for Synology came to an end this way.

Replacement for DS1515+
22 January 2022

I bought it as replacement of a DS1515+ which collapsed after 4 and a half years of continuous service.Afraid about migration (once after reinstalling the DSM operation system I discovered not all settings are stored in the backup), it went really smooth. Obviously the DSM OS stored in the disks didn't match the new hardware and didn't started at power on, but identifying it with the web browser it requested to download and install the correct DSM according to the hardware, taking care to use the same version already existing in the disks, and using the option for system migration before starting installation, then just restart and that's all, system came alive as if nothing would happen, just with new more powerful body.Very happy with the migration experience.

They really stuffed it
13 April 2022

How unfortunate. We as the consumers are locked into using their own HDDs otherwise our GUI starts shouting at us that the HDDs are unverified. Why not just offer an extended warranty if using Synology HDDS? I can't believe they lowered themselves to this level.

Very nice experience so far

Switched from QNAP TS-451 due to Intel LPC bus degradation infamous problem. Comparing to QNAP I find it very quiet and responsive. Bought Kingston memory https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/kingston-so-ddr4-pc-2666-cl19-server-premier-ecc-1-x-16gb-ddr4-2666-so-dimm-memory-15887457?supplier=406802Works ok, just find annoying receiving warning from NAS that this memory module is not whitelisted.
