The Tamnavulin Distillery dates back to the 1800’s where it played second fiddle to the Glenlivet Distillery. It is one of the original Speyside distilleries producing a light cereal driven malt whisky. It boasts six large stills and has a short fermentation time. The distillery has been open and closed through its long history jumping from the ownership of Invergordon Distillers to Whyte & MacKay and now currently owned by Philippines based group Emperador (2021). Most of the single malt that is produced here is used in blends. This double cask matured single malt is the first release from the distillery since the 1990’s. A whisky that was initially matured in Ex Bourbon American oak barrels before being finished for a short period in ex Sherry barrels.

Tonight’s dram takes me (virtually) back to the Speyside region of Scotland, to the Tamnavulin distillery. The Sherry Cask opens with malt, honey, and raw cinnamon (non-sweet cinnamon flavor, no spice), followed by raisins, green bananas, and English walnuts, with a hint of milk chocolate, then vanilla, light caramel, semi-spicy ginger, and grapefruit zest. The flavors are muted and indistinct. The legs are thin-but-clingy, delivering a medium-length finish. I’ve had some wonderful drams from Tamnavulin, but the Sherry Cask misses the mark. This is one that had great potential, but it went unrealized.Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.

I have always loved a sherry cask finish whisky. Tamnavulin's sherry cask version does not disappoint. Bold flavours that are not too sweet. Beautiful rich amber colour with a firm but not overpowering aftertaste.

Excellent
This is a sweet whisky with the sherry cask coming through. Not overbearing. Very pleasant.
You never know whether whiskeys of uncertain age will be any good, but I was delighted with this. The label claims notes of raisin, vanilla and orange, and that's exactly what it delivers. This will be my Speyside of choice from now on - one or two of its rivals are perhaps not as good as they used to be, and it's great to have a classy one available at this price.
Great for the price, approachable, sweet, nothing too difficult, but enough complexity for interest. Will appeal to people who think they don't like whisky.
My husband is a whisky fanatic. He only drinks single malt whisky and is really particular about which ones he has but he absolutely loves this sherry cask. He highly recommends this one and the Tamnavulin Double Cask.
even people who refuse to drink oak barrel whiskey. very fruity and kinda sweet.
an excellant bottle of the finest malt whiskey!
