This lens has an excellent focal length range with a wide f stop at the low end (28 mm) and more than adequate f stop at the high end (200 mm).My wife and I are using this lens on a Sony A7IV, Sony A7c and Sony A7RIVa and we find it to be an ideal carry around lens to which we default when we are not doing 'serious' or more focused photography (pun intended). It is light, relatively compact and well made with some weather resistance and takes a standard 67mm filter (which appears to be Tamron's standard for their Sony E Mount lenses).Auto focus is excellent and very responsive and matches most of their constant f/stop lenses for the Sony E Mount. Slight softness at the edges is just noticeable at the long end of the range but this does not detract from the tac sharp focus image in the center throughout the focal length range.f/5.6 may seem a little dim at the long end of the range (200 mm) but I find myself using this even on lenses that claim f/2.8 just to get the depth of field, so in practice this reduction in light at the long end is not a problem. f/2.8 at the wide end is great as you are more likely to be inside a building trying to get a shot while close to the subject where the wide is most useful and the light level lower. The only criticism of this lens is that the wide end is limited to 28 mm and not the more usual 24 mm. However, the consequences of trying to achieve this would be a lens that was bulkier and more costly as you have more work to do to correct speherical aberration and pin cushion or barrel distortion at the wide end.Overall a superb addition to our lenses for the Sony camera and well worth the money. The slight trade off in image quality is more than compensated for by the fact that this is the lens you are more likely to have mounted and available for that shot which occurs at a time when you do not have time to swap out the lens for a higher quality but more restricted focal length range lens.

There are higher quality Sony telephoto lenses but none that cover most of this range with a single lens. I don't mind carrying two lenses for travel, but it's a deal-breaker for video. Losing a bit of the wide end (from 24 to 28mm) has been a price worth paying.PROs (compared to Sony 24-240): significantly sharper; slightly lighter in weight; slightly less expensive; works almost seamlessly with the A7Riv.CONs: loss of the 24-28mm range; a tiny bit slower in focusing initially -- this hasn't been a problem for the type of photo/video I do, and continuous focus works well.I was going to sell the Sony 24-240 to B&H's used department, but it's value on the secondary market is low. I'm giving it to my son who has a Sony a6400.

This is my first third party lens, and I'm extremely happy that images are sharp and crisp. Great travel and walk around lens. It's nice to have 2.8 at the wide end as this will help for taking images in not so optimal light when a tripod isn't practical. In rare instances it has trouble focusing on backlit subjects where the background is the same tone. Balance on the Sony A7III is good making it a nice choice for someone who doesn't want to lug around a super heavy lens. The only thing I would like to see on this lens is Image Stabilization, however the price of the lens reflects this. Overall I would strongly recommend for beginners to advanced amateurs.

I have had three of these--all with pronounced circular distortions. The third one, recently replaced by Tamron on Warranty, is slightly better than the first two--which were from B&H and they had replaced #1 earlier. The photograph (from lens #2 of 3) is of a flat wall, taken at 70mm. The distortions exist at all focal lengths. Least at 28mm and, from 70mm to 200mm they are about the same as the attached photo.I do a lot of geometric, compositional work with architectural and urban origins--and the lines, both horizontal and vertical, need to be straight. The distortions are correctible, but they shouldn't be there. I have experienced nothing similar in my Sony G 24-105 or in my Sony RX100vi which, at 24-200 has a similar zoom range to the Tamron's 28-200. Those ... Those lenses have virtually no circular distortions at all.Otherwise, the lenses have been very good--surprisingly sharp for zooms with relatively wide focal ranges, so if your work doesn't depend on geometric accuracy, it's great! And, a note about the folks at Tamron. They have provided timely, helpful, considerate and dedicated customer support throughout a longish ordeal. This is just a product with an unfixable condition.
This lens serves my purpose when I'm traveling and when I am just walking about not knowing what interesting subjects and scenes will be encountered.I had been carrying an a7Riv with the Tamron 2.8/70-180 in the belt pack of a Think Tank Rotation 22 plus a Fuji x100v on a neck strap. That is good, but this is 800g lighter while a larger focal length range. I'm sacrificing wider apertures which I rarely want in the field. For travel I will combine this with either my Sony 4/16-35 PZ G or my Loxia 21.I always want a hood, for both blocking of stray light and for front element protection. But I also want quick access to my CPL. Therefore I use collapsible rubber hoods and attach my CPL (and my NDs) to the hood's front threads. Below 35mm on this and on many zooms ... Below 35mm on this and on many zooms the deep frame of a collapsible hood will vignette. By stepping up to 77mm on this lens I can shoot at 28mm without vignetting, if I leave the hood collapsed, and the frame of the hood does function a bit to block stray light. For convenience I use only K&F magnetic filters and tethered pinch caps.I sold my heavier Sony 4/24-105, bought from B&H in 2018. I cannot think of any circumstance in which I'd choose the 24-105 over this lens, advantages of much longer reach, faster aperture in mid range, and 75g less to carry. Any time I want to go wider than 28 I also need wider than 24.
After months of research and pondering what lens I would want to complement my sony FE camera, I came across this lens. I mainly shoot landscape photography, and I'm trying to stay relatively cheap being a college student hobbiest photographer, without compromising too much on the performance end. I have to say I am pretty impressed so far with this lens. I had my doubts, but to have a lens with this much range that is still plenty sharp, at least for my needs, is great. I would say for anyone trying to decide whether they should buy both a mid range 24-70 in addition to a 70-200, or this lens instead, you probably won't regret it when you look at how much money you will save. There is some fringing and chromatic aberration, however the corrective profile in Lightroom takes care of that just fine. It's also so light and compact for what it is, which makes it a perfect travel companion that complements the light world of full frame bodies. I have only really found two downsides with this lens. First, there is no optical stabilization, so in some instances you will definitely need a tripod. Although, with the IBIS in sony cameras, it isn't terrible. Additionally, I have had a few instances where the autofocus struggles a little bit, especially in low light, but this has been fairly rare. So, to wrap up, I would recommend this lens to anyone who was like me, trying to stay on a budget but get a good lens that can still perform well over a vast focal range, this would be a good option, for me the best option that I could find.
-This lens has the stupid 'focus by wire design' - where if you are manual focusing between to points it will shift the distance between those focus points based on how fast and slow you focus. I tried to use it and get used to it, but its just terrible. I spent 10 seconds trying to get focused on an object I had just been focused on because of this function.- And if you're wondering about auto focus, I tried that as well and it wasn't terrible but I would absolutely not rely on it unless maybe zoomed all the way out.- The image quality actually seemed pretty decent from what I could tell. and the construction felt very solid. It also sealed very firmly to my camera more so than any lens I've owned which was comforting.I got this lens to have an all-in-one ... I have no doubt this would make a decent 'autofocus for photos' lens but for video work where you aren't just setting the focus and leaving it, its awful. I really hope they stop integrating this stupid type of focus into lenses. I never saw a review talk about this so here you go! Hope it helps you!
I wanted to have one of these mainly for running around and travel purposes. I didn't expect perfection but hoped it would be as good as a Canon 24-240 I'd owned while back. Upon getting it tested it and found the left side was not as sharp as the right. Replaced it with another copy and this one is sharp side to side up down and at ALL focal lengths, so I can not ask for more. Focus in good light is instant and only slightly slower in lower light, but at least is accurate 100% of the time. I like the build quality and its got no creaks or play in the barrel. Nice and light too which makes for a A7RV combo with this lens a super travel companion. Very similar in size and weight to a former OM-1/12-100 f4 combo I used to travel with. I do a lot of hiking and nature photography. Carrying multiple lenses can make my pack really heavy. This lens allows me to take moderate wide-angle shots but still be able to zoom into details. It is also a great lens for traveling. To capture wildlife I can use it in super-35 or clear-image-zoom mode to get the equivalent field of view of a 300 to 400mm lens. I use this lens most often with my a7c for a lightweight but powerful kit but I also use it frequently with my a7iv. It is so versatile that it is on my camera more often than any other lens. This lens in my opinion, as the title says, is the BEST all-in-one mirrorless lens in the market for most hobbyists. When people talk about a zoom lens like this, the first impression will always be: this is a lens that has nothing but zoom range. However, things are changing rapidly. It is like 10 years ago when mirrorless first came out, nobody could imagine it is now an era for mirrorless. This lens is superb in every aspect: a fantastic zoom range up to 200mm! Very lightweight considering the zoom range, starting aperture at f2.8, and most importantly, the IQ does not compromise. It is also weather-sealed, has a fast focus, and comes with macro capability. What else can you expect from such a lens at such an affordable price? People probably don't understand ... If you want an all-in-one, this is it.
