I purchased this lens as the only lens I will take on vacation. I usually purchase Canon L lenses but Canon doesn't have a super zoom lens with as wide a range of focal lengths. In addition, my alternative was going to be a Canon EF 24 - 105mm f4 L which costs approximately $1000. This Tamron lens costs about $400 less. I was concerned about picture quality so I did a little test. I used three Canon camera bodies (7D, 5D Mark IV, and 1Dx Mark II) and the two lenses (28-300mm Tamron and 24-105mm Canon L) and took a total of 6 pictures of the same still life subject, one right after the other. I then cropped and adjusted the exposures to be about the same using Lightroom to accommodate for changes in lighting. Then I compared each pair of exposures for each camera body and found almost no difference in the visual quality of the pictures. After using Lightroom to adjust color, contrast, sharpness, etc I found virtually NO difference. So ... save some money and buy this Tamron lens, especially considering the fact that Canon has no equivalent. The only negative I can find is that the Tamron lens does not seem to focus as quickly or sharply when taking action shots. For that, I rate the lens as 4 out of 5 stars.

I am giving this lens a 5-star rating because of it's all-around performance. I was amazed at the sharpness of this lens and honestly did not expect it to be this sharp, given that it is a wide range zoom lens. But what a pleasant surprise. It is tack sharp at all focal lengths from 28mm to 300mm I also like this lens because of it's weight at 15 ounces versus my 3.5 lb 70-200mm f/2.8 Nikon. When on vacation, I leave the heavy beast at home because it is not a walking around lens for a70 year-old. I wish that this Tamron would open up to more than f/6.3 at 200 and 300 mm, but I knew that limiting lens design ahead of time and plan to use this for day-time photos of lighthouses and parks. Overall, this lens has been a joy to use and I would definitely recommend it for someone needing a light-weight walk-around vacation lens. Just be sure to get a polarizer and a clear glass filter.

This is a great lens. I am actually using it with my Canon EOS M200 with an adapter, and it works wonderfully. The macro ability is amazing. The pictures I included are demonstrations of the macro and zoom. The moon picture is cropped, so that you can see the slight chromatic aberration (the pink and blue along the edges), at extreme zoom and on very high contrast subjects. The lens I got was listed with a condition of "Bargain", and it does look like like it was previously used, but it is completely functional and the image quality is great! I asked for advice on which camera to take for a photo workshop in Wyoming. I told the tech I loved my Tamron 18-400 lens and would like to use a full frame camera with one. I ordered the items suggested. When I arrived in Wyoming I learned that the lens was incompatible with the camera. That was on Friday Sept. 10. I reached out to Roger and asked what I was doing wrong. He told me it wouldn't work. Monday you shipped me a lens that arrived late Tuesday night via FedEx. I lost five days of 7 day trip because of this error. I have NEVER had anything but excellent ratings for LensRental. I understand that with Covid there are staffing issues. This error cost me a tremendous loss of images on a trip to build my portfolio. Next time, I will test in the parking lot.
There simply isn't an all-in-one lens that compares favorably against primes. Further, there are very few affordable super-zooms for Canon that include optical image stabilization. In fact, there are two -- one from Canon (the RF 24-240) and this Tamron. I've tried both, and come away liking the Tamron better in almost every respect. It is possible to get really satisfying results from this lens as long as you avoid the bad spots. Here's what I've found:1. The best results, sharpness-wise at ALL focal lengths are obtained in the range of F8 to F16. This is particularly true at the end points, 28 and 300mm.2. Chromatic abberation is quite visible at the edges at 300mm. I generally avoid this focal length unless it's really needed. If your camera has lens-compensation to fix distortion, vignetting and other lens attributes, turn it on! In my EOS RP it really helps, at least when producing JPEGs.That's about it, not a long list. This lens is my constant companion, I almost never pull out the L-glass.A couple other comments. Unlike the Canon 24-240 RF lens (which relies on in-camera digital correction to fix a world of problems), this lens puts out really usable RAW images that don't need much fixing.Lastly, be VERY careful if looking at this lens used -- it may not have the most up-to-date firmware. This is one instance where NEW really is better, and worth it. Old lens firmware may not work in your new whiz-bang mirrorless Canon.
It is possible to find things NOT to like about this lens, particularly when comparing at a pixel level against the $$$ L lenses. However, with a little practice, it's also easy to find LOTS of things to love. It's light, compact, affordable, has huge range, focuses lightning fast, has great VC (IS) and it's truly civilized. As long as you stay between F8 and F22, your images will be nice and sharp all over.My one gripe is a fairly generous amount of chromatic aberration at 300mm, especially around the edges. So, I save that focal length for when I really need it, and clean up in PS. No big deal. This has performed flawlessly in my EOS RP and is even recognized by the built-in distortion correction in the camera's software. I purchased this used, but remarkably clean example for $376.00, Dec. 2018. I was looking for something w/extended range to rival the Canon 24-105mm L lens as an all-purpose walk-around lens to fill a whole in my inventory for an older, but minty, Canon 1DS MKII.. (I also use a more modern Canon 80D). I have the 2nd gen. Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 (A009?, you'll need a crane & truss for use w/the 1DS MKII), Tamron 100-400mm (nice, lightweight, long lens) and a Canon 70-200mm f/4 (always great). This Tamron 28-300mm 3.5-6.3 PZD Di VC for Canon does the job admirably and is remarkably smaller & weighs less than the venerable 24-105mm, too..!! Sharpness, color, contrast are in there at all apertures.. What is also pleasantly surprising is it's accurate, fast, low light auto focus ability, something I didn't expect.. Rev. Dustin Abbot reviewed this lens positively, accurately and enthusiastically. His review convinced me to find one.. (I ALWAYS check with Rev. Abbott & Christopher Frost to see if they have a review). This PZD version isn't cheap, but after trying the less expensive (junk), disappointing and horrendously unusable earlier LD version (I was trying to save $), I must say that I am now a Happy Camper. When I upgrade to a newer full frame camera, this lens will remain in my inventory. It's a lot of fine glass for the $.
I paired this lens with a Nikon D750 because I was looking for an all in one lens for travel. I also tried the Nikon 28-300 and I preferred the Tamron hands down. The quality was much more than I expected. Images were sharp, focus was fast and silent and the lens is so light. I was expecting to have to "settle" for some compromises because frankly, "all in one" lenses are notorious for having some limitations-especially when being paired with a full frame camera. I have to say, I was PLEASANTLY surprised with the capabilities of this lens. So much so that I bought it! Give it a try. As always, the condition of the lens was great, packed VERY well and arrived on time. Overall the build quality is good and for the wide zoom range the lens produces sharp images. Also on the positive is the size and weight of the lens which lends itself to being a good all day carry travel lens if you only want to use a single lens. On the negative I find the autofocus to be very slow overall and very inconsistent, especially in less than strong, bright outdoor light. I am thinking this might just be this particular lens and most other reviews of this lens do not suggest that is a problem area. I have several other Tamron lenses (150-600mm G2, 100-400mm, and an older 18-270 Di II lens that focus much faster and more consistently than this 28-300mm. This lens does allow for immediate manual focus just by turning the focus ring, so there is no need to move the switch from auto to manual first, which is a good thing. Would I recommend it, yes overall, especially if you have one that doesn't have a slow focus issue.
I used to travel with 5D MK-II with 16-35 f2.8 L MK-I and 24-70 f2.8 MK-I (Sometimes 70-200 f4 IS as well). I got this lens for long hikes when I don't want to carry heavy load, I though it would be somewhat of a substitution for the 35-200 mm range. My experience is using the lens on two backpacking/hiking trips and some portrait/city life photography.Pros:1. Ultralight and affordable for the focal range it provides on a full frame.2. Has a sweet spot somewhere between 30-80 mm with f5.6-f8.0, where the lens is sharp and produce good color and contrast.Cons:1. Coming from L, you will not like this lens. Canon glass produce this beautiful color and resolution that is missing in this. I realized that when I took multiple photos in difficult light using both my L glasses and this one, I thought the main difference would be color reproduction and sharpness. But the biggest difference was lack of resolution and microcontrast. I was surprised by how much details I could extract from the shadows in the photos taken on the Canon glass but so little from the Tamron!2. The picture quality beyond 120-130 mm is abysmal, its not sharp, even with manual focusing.3. The last con is hard to put in words! Let me explain, when I go out with my 24-70 on 5D MK-II or My Fuji XT20 with a manual lens, I love taking photos, I enjoy handling the camera, the lens. The whole process is a pleasing experience. With the 28-300, its does not feel like a fun experience! To summarize, as long as you are only using this lens to share photos with your friends or post on Facebook/Instagram, you should be fine with it. But for other purpose, I would carry my L glass!
