I rented this lens to try out to see if I liked it enough to buy and save money rather than buying the Nikon version. I had the opportunity to photograph a theater performance with it. Using a Nikon D850, I found the autofocus to be incredibly inconsistent using only the F2.8 aperture. Many of the shots I took came out just slightly out of focus. When they did show in focus, they were tack sharp and looked as I hoped they would. I've shot theater for 10 years and never had a lens this inconsistent. Excellent image quality and good autofocus on my Canon 5D Mark III. It's very sharp, I really love this lens. I updated from the old Tamron 70-200. Just 2 things that bug me -1. The switches are really easy to accidentally hit and move, especially if you carry it on a crossbody strap or holdfast harness like I do. It bumps up against my leg and moves the switches. A few times I've missed a shot at a wedding because it had switched to manual focus accidentally. If I carry it on the left side of my body it reduces the accidental hits, but still happens sometimes. I "fixed" this by putting some velcro straps around the lens over the switches so they can't move (you can also use gaffer's tape).2. This lens is fantastic. It’s sharp from 70mm all the way to 200mm wide open. It’s a great low light lens. VR is amazing. The build quality is top notch. It doesn’t lengthen to expand to 200mm. It does that internally. The weather sealing is also great. I am in love with this lens. This is the only zoom lens I would ever consider to use for portraits. Just a fantastic lens all around**the best thing about this lens is the Vibration Reduction or VC as they call it. It’s 2nd to none. Better than lenses twice the price. The stills VR setting is such a fantastic feature. It will allow you to hand hold shots at very low shutter speeds. You can shoot 200mm at 1/30 SS or even lower.

I do a lot of photography in performance venues and can't use flash so a fast lens is very important. I lusted after the comparable Canon offerings but this lens had great reviews and was considerably less expensive; then B&H dropped the price a hundred bucks and I couldn't say no!So far I'm very pleased with this lens. It's heavy, but that's the nature of constant aperture engineering. You'll want a tripod or monopod for long shoots.I would give this five stars except for the sun shade. It feels like Tamron cut corners here. The attachment feels much less sturdy than the shade on its sister 24-70 G2 and I was disappointed when I went to put the shade on the lens.
The only way this business could be better is if they donated everything they made to charity.This is my second rental with Lens Rentals. I tried a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 first, and enjoyed it. This Canon has better AF, Detail. The colors are the biggest difference, they were true and noticeably better than the Tamron.The customer service is top notch, the products are well taken care of, and the entire process is incredibly easy. Receive your box with your product in a pelican case, use the same box to ship it back, put the included return label over the original shipping label, and tape it back up to drop it off. They even include the shipping tape for the return box.

The weight comes mostly from of the wide aperture in this zoom range and solid construction. I rarely use a tripod/monopod because I'm always moving around and was worried that the weight would be an issue. However, after using this lens as a walking-around lens, I was happy to find that this is not a big issue. Note that all f/2.8 lenses in this focus range have a similar weight. Thus, if this is an essential factor, you might want to consider an f/4 lens (~0.9kg) or smaller.Enjoy.
Lens arrived 2 (free!) days early in near new condition. Popped it on my Z7 and went out to play! At first focus was soft, I recalibrated for mild front focus and got shots sharper than my Nikon z series 24-70 s f4! Big shocker was the vibration control. Shooting at 1/20th with 70 year old hands and getting shots very sharp indeed! I surprised myself and bought the thing….Before retirement I used to help Retail and Service companies improve their customer experience functions. Lens Rental could serve as an example of excellence in this area.
Im sure I got a bad lens (four, actually!), because there’s no way the Tamron flagship lens duo (the 24-70mm and 70-200mm G2) were meant to perform this way, but alas – and I’m not the only person who’s suffered the wrath of poor quality control…The 70-200mm G2 (and it’s little brother, the 24-70mm G2) have the potential of being great lenses, and apparently there are a lot of “good” ones out there. The ones I’ve owned (and no longer do) were “well built” (in appearance), and ‘seemed’ to focus fast. But the autofocus consistency was so poor on all the units that I owned that I simply could not trust the glass. These lenses have the potential of being very sharp as well, but that is the direct by-product of hitting accurate focus – or being able to calibrate the ... I was to the point that I was switching to “lesser” lenses to get the shots – like Tamron’s own 17-35mm which is a sweet lens, or their 100-400mm which was more consistent at 100-200 than the 70-200mm G2 (shame, shame, lol) – and while typically not as sharp as the G2 lenses, when you have accurate autofocus in these other lenses, you end up keeping more shots!The first copy I got was horribly with auto-focus, sometimes slow, sometimes fast…and no matter of Tap-in calibration was able to create consistent performance. I also had to combine a ton of AF Fine Tune in addition to Tap-in calibration, which is simply unacceptable - That unit was sent back for exchange, only for me to get one that back-focused pretty bad. But I was able to calibrate it quite well with my SpyderLensCal as well as with Focal software. But, like the 24-70mm G2, the calibrations I did didn’t hold in the field, as I just started getting really bad shots. Each time I re-calibrated, the lens took a different calibration. Again, tested it out in the field, and poor results.So I did some tests and concluded that this lens (as well as the 24-70mm) had issues when the focus distance changed substantially – if I took at shot, then defocused to the rear or to the front heavily, I couldn’t get focus back on the original subject; it was either front of rear focused. If I made small changes in defocus, the lenses were fine. The lens was really bad at the long end (200mm).As well, something I noticed immediately was that both of these lenses (24-70 and 70-200) actually LOST significant sharpness as you stopped down! What?! The lens sharpness was best at wide open, and dropped off between f/4 and f/11 (with f/6.3 and f/8 being the worst! Stay what??), and then actually got better up to f/16. What a really weird sharpness curve…Then JUST recently Tamron released firmware updates which 1) changed the calibration numbers again (I reloaded my previous calibrations and they aren’t even close now), and 2) the lens seemed to actually perform worse.I spent more time trying to calibrate these lenses than I did in post processing, and that’s a problem.I hope you get a good copy if you purchase – I didn’t (twice). And I no longer own either of them.
While I have not had this lens very long, I am very happy with the results so far. I enjoy taking sports photos (college baseball, currently), and those have turned out exceptionally well. (I use this lens with my Canon EOS 80D digital camera.) I wanted to test the lens under the artificial lighting of a night game, but I didn't get the chance before the team I photograph played its final home game. That is the only reason I've given this lens 4 stars instead of 5 - the lack of opportunity to test it under low-light conditions. I also do some scenic/landscape and wildlife photography, but again, I haven't had the opportunity to use the lens in those situations yet.
