Disappointing autofocus

I rented this lens to try out to see if I liked it enough to buy and save money rather than buying the Nikon version. I had the opportunity to photograph a theater performance with it. Using a Nikon D850, I found the autofocus to be incredibly inconsistent using only the F2.8 aperture. Many of the shots I took came out just slightly out of focus. When they did show in focus, they were tack sharp and looked as I hoped they would. I've shot theater for 10 years and never had a lens this inconsistent. By contrast I shot the same performance the next day with my Nikon 70-200 F4 and had great results as I usually do.Maybe the Tamron would do better on a D5 or sports body, or maybe it's just not great in inconsistent lighting, or maybe I'm not the photographer I think I ...Β MoreI rented this lens to try out to see if I liked it enough to buy and save money rather than buying the Nikon version. A few times I've missed a shot at a wedding because it had switched to manual focus accidentally. If I carry it on the left side of my body it reduces the accidental hits, but still happens sometimes. This model it's near the front of the lens (reversing the place of the focus ring and zoom ring). It's a bit awkward for my hands to reach to the front of the lens to zoom. It's taken quite a while to get used to.

This lens is fantastic. It’s sharp from 70mm all the way to 200mm wide open. It’s a great low light lens. VR is amazing. The build quality is top notch. It doesn’t lengthen to expand to 200mm. It does that internally. The weather sealing is also great. I am in love with this lens. This is the only zoom lens I would ever consider to use for portraits. Just a fantastic lens all around**the best thing about this lens is the Vibration Reduction or VC as they call it. It’s 2nd to none. Better than lenses twice the price. The stills VR setting is such a fantastic feature. It will allow you to hand hold shots at very low shutter speeds. You can shoot 200mm at 1/30 SS or even lower.

Nice image, heavy
14 September 2022

I do a lot of photography in performance venues and can't use flash so a fast lens is very important. I lusted after the comparable Canon offerings but this lens had great reviews and was considerably less expensive; then B&H dropped the price a hundred bucks and I couldn't say no!So far I'm very pleased with this lens. It's heavy, but that's the nature of constant aperture engineering. You'll want a tripod or monopod for long shoots.I would give this five stars except for the sun shade. It feels like Tamron cut corners here. The attachment feels much less sturdy than the shade on its sister 24-70 G2 and I was disappointed when I went to put the shade on the lens.

No Compromise Mid-Telephoto Zoom.

First off, you should read a proper long form review before making a purchase this large. However, I will say my expectations were greatly surpassed upon receiving this lens. The build quality and feel of the lens is fantastic. Coming from a 400g zoom, the increased bulk of this lens was not actually that big of a deal. The lens is front heavy, but the balance point is well place, allowing for easy access of the focus ring and switches. Accessing the zoom ring is less ideal. The image stabilization is highly effective and utterly silent. It doesn't quite hit the claimed 5 stops of assistance, even in mode 3. However, I have hand tremors, so getting a comfortable 4 stops of IS is impressive nonetheless.Autofocus isn't as fast or quiet as Canon's USM, but it's ...Β MoreFirst off, you should read a proper long form review before making a purchase this large. However, I will say my expectations were greatly surpassed upon receiving this lens. Accuracy and confidence are not an issue. Manually focusing this lens is surprisingly nice at f/2.8 thanks to the smooth focus ring and longer then average focus throw. Though I've yet to find a situation where'd you want to manually focus when you have access to such an effective AF system.Sharpness is incredible, even on a 24 MP APS-C body there really isn't much point in stopping down. My copy of the lens is also just as sharp at 200mm as it is at every other focal length, in stark contrast to what's found in reviews. Either Tamron made some adjustments in the past few years or I just got a golden copy. On a similar note, bokeh is incredibly soft, with no outlining or concentric rings to speak off, it's near perfect.I haven't used the Canon or Nikon versions, but besides slightly faster and quieter autofocus I really fail to see what would justify paying double over this lens. It's built like a tank, and functions beautifully.Just don't go into it thinking have such a nice lens will automatically make you take better pictures. If you don't specifically require the action stopping shutter speeds and shallow depth of field this lens offers, you are wasting your money. Get a cheaper F/4 zoom instead.

One of the most quality business I have ever given my money to
22 November 2022

The only way this business could be better is if they donated everything they made to charity. This is my second rental with Lens Rentals. I tried a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 first, and enjoyed it. This Canon has better AF, Detail. The colors are the biggest difference, they were true and noticeably better than the Tamron. The customer service is top notch, the products are well taken care of, and the entire process is incredibly easy. Receive your box with your product in a pelican case, use the same box to ship it back, put the included return label over the original shipping label, and tape it back up to drop it off. They even include the shipping tape for the return box.

Preferred over Nikon's 70-200

I have been using this lens now for more than 2-years and it has really made a difference in my wedding photography. The lens is built tough, quickly finds focus even in very low light conditions, has wonderful bokeh, and is tack sharp. Stabilization works fantastic, with hand-held shots at 1/15 of a second possible--though try not to do this if possible. Be forewarned though, after 8-12-hours of wedding work, you will feel this lens--this is not a light lens. If there is a challenge that I would suggest being addressed in a future version, I would ask that the three selector switches on the lens barrel be recessed or guarded better to prevent accidental change. TL;DR: I settled on this lens because you get a fantastic IQ for the price. I would recommend it to others. Some background. My friend let me borrow the Nikon 70-200 f/4 for testing purposes. I was very impressed by the lightning-fast focus, sharpness, lightweight body, and OS. That was an excellent lens! However, I also enjoy taking portraits and low light nature pictures and craving more light and shallower DOF.My experience with the Tamron is from a Nikon d780 shooting hummingbirds, portraits, and a few landscapes during hikes in dry climates/cities. For these purposes, I have no complaints and would easily compare it to the Nikon 70-200 f4. The focus is fast/accurate, and the main reason for blurry shots is that I lose track of small subjects or some other user error. Note that my copy came with a free Tap-in console, so it would have been easy to correct any focusing issues from the factory. The biggest drawback of this lens is that it is somewhat heavy (~1.5kg) to carry around your neck. The weight comes mostly from of the wide aperture in this zoom range and solid construction. I rarely use a tripod/monopod because I'm always moving around and was worried that the weight would be an issue. However, after using this lens as a walking-around lens, I was happy to find that this is not a big issue. Note that all f/2.8 lenses in this focus range have a similar weight. Thus, if this is an essential factor, you might want to consider an f/4 lens (~0.9kg) or smaller.Enjoy.

Surpassed Expectations...So I Bought It!
16 July 2022

Lens arrived 2 (free!) days early in near new condition. Popped it on my Z7 and went out to play! At first focus was soft, I recalibrated for mild front focus and got shots sharper than my Nikon z series 24-70 s f4! Big shocker was the vibration control. Shooting at 1/20th with 70 year old hands and getting shots very sharp indeed! I surprised myself and bought the thing….Before retirement I used to help Retail and Service companies improve their customer experience functions. Lens Rental could serve as an example of excellence in this area.

While I have not had this lens very long, I am very happy with the results so far. I enjoy taking sports photos (college baseball, currently), and those have turned out exceptionally well. (I use this lens with my Canon EOS 80D digital camera.) I wanted to test the lens under the artificial lighting of a night game, but I didn't get the chance before the team I photograph played its final home game. That is the only reason I've given this lens 4 stars instead of 5 - the lack of opportunity to test it under low-light conditions. I also do some scenic/landscape and wildlife photography, but again, I haven't had the opportunity to use the lens in those situations yet. The big test will come when I have the chance to photograph events "under the lights." But so far: I love this lens.
