Wakefield is a third generation family wine business and was founded in 1969 by Bill Taylor who was inspired by his love for the red wines of Bordeaux’s Medoc region. He was drawn to South Australia’s Clare Valley where his first 178 hectare vineyard was planted on the banks of the Wakefield River close to the village of Auburn. The vineyard was carefully chosen to benefit from red-brown loam over limestone soils (also known as Terra Rossa) and the Clare Valley’s cool climate which were known to be ideal for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon vines. In 1973 Bill Taylor tentatively entered his inaugural Cabernet Sauvignon vintage in Royal Adelaide Wine Show and was delighted to win the prestigious Montgomery Trophy for best red wine in show. Since then Wakefield wines have gone on to win more than 2000 medals and awards in major international wine competitions. This wine displays aromas of rich blackcurrant and cassis. The french oak maturation is also evident with aromas of cedar and spice. A hallmark of the varietal, the tannins are fine and elegant. The palate is well balanced, complex and fulfilling and lingers on the finish. Enjoy with rib of beef cooked on a barbecue.
