The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood is a single malt Scotch whisky produced by The Balvenie Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland. It is known for its unique maturation process, which involves aging the whisky in two different types of oak casks. First, the whisky is matured in traditional American oak casks for at least 12 years. Then, it is transferred to European oak sherry casks for an additional few months, where it undergoes a second maturation process. This process imparts a distinct flavor and character to the whisky, making it stand out among other single malts. The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood has a rich, smooth flavor with notes of honey, vanilla, and cinnamon. It has a slightly sweet aroma, with hints of fruit and oak. The sherry cask finish gives it a subtle nuttiness and spiciness, making it a well-rounded and complex whisky. As a testament to its quality, The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood has received numerous awards and accolades. It has been named the Best Single Malt Scotch 12 Years and Under at the International Whisky Competition, as well as receiving a Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge. Overall, The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood is a sophisticated and elegant whisky that is enjoyed by both whisky enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike. Its unique maturation process and delicious flavor make it a staple in any whisky collection.

My father and uncle would smoke cigars and drink this scotch. As I became of age and started getting an interest for scotch this became my gateway single malt scotch. It’s great for everyday sipping, special occasions without cracking open the expensive stuff, and pairs great with certain cigars. The price is still reasonable but going up.

Simply amazing. This is one of the highest rated scotches for a reason. I’ve yet to taste a bottle of this quality and I will buy more!!Nose: immediately I smell a bit of peat. Just a slight amount that fades into a oaky smoke that is so sweet. It quickly turns into fresh apples and pears with honey.Palate: there’s a bit of spice up front immediately followed by a delicious sweetness. A dark fruit, sherry-like sweetness, follows that isn’t present on the nose.Finish: long and very oaky, some peat then more tannins. So delicious. Makes me want more and more.

Balvenie 12 Doublewood is smooth with a lot of flavor. The nose picks up sweet with vanilla accents and a deep rich sherry finish. I feel this is underrated and hope it stays that way. Most recently the Balvenie 12 Doublewood has claimed my daily drinker spot although the Walker 15 sneaks in every now and again. The Macallan 18 which for some reason (maybe it’s because I do not drink it that often), always makes my top spot. It’s just a really good Scotch. I mix it up as to how I take it depending on what experience I want to have. Neat is great for those times when you want the deep notes from the woods and are looking for the real deal. I usually take it on the rocks so that the flavors smooth out a bit and I can get more complexity from the Scotch. The only time I put a splash in is if the alcohol content is high to take the bite off. This stuff is good though! I highly recommend it.Smell: Sweet butterscotch, vanilla nut, dried fruit, oak, roasted maltTaste: Viscous mouth feel. A spiciness that compliments the burn. Fairly smooth and the roasted profile compliments the burn. Feels appropriate. Roasted malt, butterscotch, vanilla, nut, and dried fruits. Fairly complex and develops as it goes on. Bold. An oaky, malty, sweet-tart finish that lingers.Neat: Great stuff to sip. Very complex, relatively smooth, and enjoyable! Lingers for a while. On the rocks: Great. The roasted malt and oak flavor pops without diluting the other notes much at all.Mixed: Can make a great old-fashioned but I'd personally advise no mixers. The only reason this is a 4/5 is that I think Highland Park 12 is better and ... MoreThis stuff is good though! I'd buy this again and I would recommend it! Pairs extremely well with a smoke. Similar stuff to this is the Edradour 10. That one is a bit more roasted and almost chocolaty.
The Double Wood makes all the difference. This is a great transitional Scotch for the Bourbon drinker who hasn't made the leap in to Scotch. If you are a fan of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked or Old Forester 1910, this is right down your alley. No strong oak tannin on this one.
Decided to spring a bit more for a 12 year than I’m comfortable with...long story short I bought a second bottle. This is the best 12 year I’ve had. I tried the Balvenie 17 year and the 12 is better, in my opinion. It’s not cheap for the age but it’s cheap for the taste. I’m a Glenlivet guy at heart but this rivals the Glenlivet 15 as my favorite when I want something smooth. I won’t insult the pros by breaking down the flavors too deep, but there’s just enough smokiness to go with the sweet and woody taste to make it a favorite. It sits on the shelf next to my chair and books. If you’re considering it, then grab a bottle.
This is really smooth and nice for anyone even though someone doesn't really enjoy whisky. My husband also fell in love with Balvenie since I bought him a present a couple of years ago. The price was an issue but Vintage Cellars had a membership discount so I bought two this time. :D
This is only my second bottle of scotch I have bought, the first being Bowmore 12yo. I bought this based on the great reviews and wanting to broaden my horizons. I agree with the reviewers that stated the sherry taste kind of ruins the scotch. I know this is a different scotch than Islay malts, but perhaps I should have tried the non-doublewood variety. Has some nice fruit flavors but lacks the depth and complexity of Bowmore or others I have tried before getting into buying bottles myself. I am going to explore more from Belvenie and others but so far I prefer the smoky, vanilla, peaty complex flavor of the Bowmore. This was also $65 in my local store, the Bowmore is only $50
I've been drinking single malts for a number of years, now, and have built a modest collection of 'moderately priced' malts. I'm not blessed with the nose and palate that enables me to discern every little flavor and nuance as some are able, whether it's wine or scotch. But I very much enjoy Speyside malts and this Balvenie Double Wood, especially at this price point, is one of my 'go to'. It has a sweet, vanilla, floral and peppery start with some smoothness from the Sherry cask aging. I poured a bit last night and let it breathe for a bit and my wife could smell 'carmel corn' from across the room. It is not quite as rich or smooth as Aberlour a'bunadh or as complex as Cragganmore 12, but, again, at half the cost, a nice 'everyday' malt.
My personal taste in whisky tends to lean towards the island varieties, including Highland Park, Talisker, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Sprinkbank, etc. But I also enjoy a gentler Speyside whisky on occasion, so I wanted to give The Balvenie Double Wood 12 a try. Having quite a bit of experience with younger whisky, I was a little taken aback by just how much of a young spirit profile was present here, with quite a rough mouth feel. It went against everything I heard about Balvenie Double Wood from others. I walked away from the bottle for several months, leaving it about 60% full on the shelf. When I eventually worked my way back to the bottle, the oxidation really helped to polish off the rough edges and the flavor was much improved. When I eventually worked my way back to the bottle, the oxidation really helped to polish off the rough edges and the flavor was much improved. Notes of vanilla and honey were now much more present, but I was also getting a strong fruity nose, particularly of ripe bananas. The remainder of the bottle ended up being a much more pleasant drinking experience and more in line with the reputation of this whisky.Perhaps I got a bottle from a rougher batch that just needed a little time to settle down. This was a good lesson to not give up on a bottle. Would I buy it again? Being honest, I would say no, as I enjoy the Balvenie 12 Single Barrel more for not a huge increase in price. But it was a worthwhile experience and, other than the rough start, was an enjoyable dram overall. I would recommend to a friend as long as they keep their expectations in check.
