The Bitcoin Standard (Hardcover) | Click & Collect Available | Management and Computers | in stock
A comprehensive and authoritative exploration of Bitcoin and its place in monetary history When a pseudonymous programmer introduced "a new electronic cash system that's fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party" to a small online mailing list in 2008, very few people paid attention. Ten years later, and against all odds, this upstart autonomous decentralized software offers an unstoppable and globally accessible hard money alternative to modern central banks. The Bitcoin Standard analyzes the historical context to the rise of Bitcoin, the economic properties that have allowed it to grow quickly, and its likely economic, political, and social implications. While Bitcoin is an invention of the digital age, the problem it purports to solve is as old as human society itself- transferring value across time and space. Author Saifedean Ammous takes the reader on an engaging journey through the history of technologies performing the functions of money, from primitive systems of trading limestones and seashells, to metals, coins, the gold standard, and modern government debt. Exploring what gave these technologies their monetary role, and how most lost it, provides the reader with a good idea of what makes for sound money, and sets the stage for an economic discussion of its consequences for individual and societal future-orientation, capital accumulation, trade, peace, culture, and art.

Great book full of fascinating insights into the power and function of money and its interaction with politics and human society. The middle section of the book can be somewhat more speculative and polemic than the early and latter chapters which are more soundly based on reasoned argument.

Saifedean is extremely eloquent and well read om Austrian economics and walks a reader of any level through the history and flaws of fiat money.Going off the gold standard and letting governments control our money slowly wrecks society. From the extension and amplified destruction of war, the news we read, to the food we eat. To not even start on the decimation of middle/lower class wealth.Last chapter is on Bitcoin. You'll get why
Love this book. Gets straight to the point. Only worth reading if you are wanting to learn a little bit about why Fiat moneys have failed in the last couple hundred years.
For skeptics/non-Bicoiners: This book changed my outlook on the world more than any other book has. This book will change you too. For anyone concerned this might be some guy just shilling bitcoin, don't be. The first 150 pages of the book hardly even mention it. Rather, the author walks us throught the history of money, while discussing the qualities that make a "good" money (ex. scarcity, divisibilty, portability). Then he discusses the current monetary system and ties it's flaws to problems in the world today. ...before finally arguing the case for bitcoin as the "most sound" money. The worst case is that you spend 10 hours reading this book and decide bitcoin isn't for you... but you still learn a lot about money, history, inflation, human behavior, etc.
"The Bitcoin Standard" is a thought-provoking guide to why Bitcoin matters. It's not just a cryptocurrency; it's sound money in a world drowning in fiat. Ammous's well-researched arguments make a compelling case for Bitcoin as the antidote to our economic woes. If you want to understand money, economics, and how Bitcoin can change the game, this book is a must-read.
Amazing breakdown of the history of money and why Bitcoin matters!
absolutely recommended, very interesting of how the gold standard preserved dynasties and wealth throwout the centuries.
