An absolute classic for this generation of kids. I've bought this for my daughter and also as baby gifts for other people. A nice gift along with a little gruffalo Teddy or pram toy. It's fairly long story but still good for bedtime. It's fun to get the wooden figures and act out the story too. Very versatile and will last all through toddler hood and probably beyond.

I really love the idea of this book—a mouse pretends to be meeting a “gruffalo” (a creature it made up) to scare away other animals from eating the mouse. Then it actually meets a gruffalo, and convinces the creature that all the other animals are scared of the mouse (they are actually scared of the gruffalo). But the mouse double fools everyone so now the gruffalo leaves the mouse alone too. It unwinds in a fun and creative way, and it’s a unique idea with a lot of fun pictures and details. But I find that actually following the storyline I described above is confusing for my young child (three years). It might be better for a slightly older child, but then it probably doesn’t need to be a board book.

My three year old grandson loves this story. I wanted to get him a book version that resembles the movie. WalMart sells this at a good price, so I ordered online without seeing it. How disappointing to discover the book has thick board pages--a feature I thought our grandson had outgrown and didn't need. I was very wrong--he still man-handles books (especially his favorites) and the thickness makes page turning much easier. This style book is still very appropriate for three year olds, and The Gruffalo remains an all-time favorite. I suggest you watch the movie first before making a book purchase--or vice versa.

A classic like this hardly needs a review, but the Gruffalo might just be Julia Donaldson best book! A great rhyming prose with a great storyline.
I am saving this book for my granddaughters third birthday. I think it is a great read for 3 - 5 year olds. I love the illustrations and story that teaches youngsters not to judge someone by appearance. Just because someone looks scary does not mean they are.
Love this book! Was a bit dissapointed in quality though... it had some kind of sticky coffee stain so several pages stuck together. A bit of paper ripped as well because of that. Overall though it was good.
We really enjoy reading The Gruffalo to our 8 month old son.Initially I was worried the character of the gruffalo might be a bit scary but my concerns seem unfounded and my son is unfazed by the monster. The rhyming text is beautifully written and allows lots of scope for play-acting with different voices for the mouse, fox, owl, snake, gruffalo and narrator. This has meant that, although it is quite a long story for a baby of his age, our son remains engaged throughout and his attention span stretched from simpler 'Spot' style books to short storybooks. As a parent, I love the themes of this book. Admittedly they're lost on our baby at this age, but I can see this story remaining a favourite for quite some time and as he grows, the lessons of courage, thinking ... MoreWe really enjoy reading The Gruffalo to our 8 month old son.Initially I was worried the character of the gruffalo might be a bit scary but my concerns seem unfounded and my son is unfazed by the monster. The rhyming text is beautifully written and allows lots of scope for play-acting with different voices for the mouse, fox, owl, snake, gruffalo and narrator. Admittedly they're lost on our baby at this age, but I can see this story remaining a favourite for quite some time and as he grows, the lessons of courage, thinking quickly to stand up to bullies and stranger danger will stay with him, I'm sure. The illustrations are lovely and vibrant. They were a little complex for our baby to start with, but upon multiple readings (almost every night) he has become familiar with them and has started being able to follow the mouse on his journey through the deep, dark wood. As he gets older, we will start pointing out the little details hidden in the illustrations that will continue to capture his attention and imagination.Physically the book is a good size for a baby to hold and manipulate independently. The pages are a thick board stock that enable him to learn to turn them without fear of bending or tearing them.If your baby is an avid bookworm at 8 months, this book will be suitable and will help develop their attention spans. For babies that are less engaged by books, perhaps wait until they are a little older.
This story (and many others by the same authors, as I am finding) is pure magic. It is soft and sweet in all the right ways; something often lacking in modern children / youth culture. It is patient in how it unfolds, and the characters are delightfully refreshing. You must have this book on your child's shelf. It will be one they pass on to their own children when the time comes. A highly commended favourite in our home.
I love the Gruffalo story so bought this book. Disappointed with quality of book - it was described as very good condition. Looked like someone had spilt water/ liquid all over it and pages stuck together and torn
Unexpected & exciting book. Any books by this author are amazing! Also check out “The Smartest Giant in Town” & “Tge Gruffalos Child”
