This sumptuous gift set includes a replica of the very rare first edition of The Hobbit, the only edition where one can now read the original version of the story before Tolkien re-edited it to become the one enjoyed by readers since 1951. The Hobbit was published on 21 September 1937, with a print run of 1,500 copies. With a beautiful cover design, nearly a dozen black & white illustrations and two black & red maps by the author himself, the book proved to be popular and was reprinted shortly afterwards. History was already being made. The scarcity of the first edition has resulted in copies commanding huge prices, way beyond the reach of most Tolkien fans. In addition, subsequent changes to the text – particularly those to chapter 5, when Tolkien decided in 1947 to revise the text to bring it better into accord with events as they were developing in its ‘sequel', The Lord of the Rings – mean that the opportunity to read the book in its original form and format has become quite difficult. This special commemorative gift set includes the first edition, so that readers of all ages – not just ‘children between the ages of 5 and 9', as Rayner Unwin famously declared in his report on the original submission – can finally enjoy Tolkien's story as it originally appeared. It also includes an exclusive CD of archive recordings that capture Tolkien reading from The Hobbit, a special copy of Thror's map which reveals the secret moon-runes when held to the light, and an accompanying booklet that relates the history of The Hobbit, and includes connected writings by JRR Tolkien.

The book is great overall, but it would've been better if the pages were sewn into the binding, instead of glued. The best part of this special edition is the CD recording of Tolkien, reading from chapter five, "Riddles in the Dark." The quality of the recording is excellent, considering its age, and with all the added extras, I think the price was well worth it.

The Box set is beautifully presented with a 3D image on the front in the original style of Tolkien's drawings. It gives a modern approach to the presentation while maintaining the traditional nature of the printing of the version. In my opinion it is done very well and holds a key spot on my presentation for Tolkien books.Inside the box you have a well-presented edition of the Hobbit that resembles very closely the original edition of the Hobbit, a CD with the voice of Tolkien himself reading extracts from the Hobbit (a must for any Tolkien fan), a copy of the map complete with hidden runes on the back and booklet celebrating the 80th anniversary of The Hobbit. No fan of Tolkien and The Hobbit could ask for more in one box set. This is a great edition for fans who want to experience the original story before it was edited to integrate better with The Lord of the Rings story.I would highly recommend this for all Fans of Tolkien or those just wanting a beautiful box set to display on their self.

Excellent presentation, the CD of Tolkien reading the first few chapters is so cool..
Firstly the box in which the book comes in is beautiful, the art on the front is very complementary to the rest. The extra contents that comes with it are amazing, the cd of Tolkien reading parts of the book was really exciting to listen to and read along with, the map is an awesome addition that is great for any collector and the information booklet is a really nice touch and gives a great insight. The book itself, the dust cover is amazing, although personally I find them annoying, I love the design of it and again just adds to the whole vibe of the book itself, and the actually cover of the book I think is the best part, there is not much to it but the green is beautiful and I love the design.
