I reluctantly read THE INHERITANCE GAMES by Jennifer Lynn Barnes when it was selected for my library's monthly book club. The librarian leading our group assured everyone she really enjoyed reading this book, but I waited until just before our book club meeting to read it because I was convinced a senior citizen wouldn't enjoy a young adult novel. Well, I was wrong. I loved reading this book and finished it in record time. In fact, I liked it so much I purchased the second book in the series, THE HAWTHORNE LEGACY, and preordered THE FINAL LEGACY, the third book to be released August 30, 2022.Ms. Barnes is a skilled writer who thoroughly developed the characters and plot. I especially appreciated the short chapters that made it easy for me to briefly pause reading and pick up again. I would have loved reading this book when I was a teenager and certainly enjoyed it now. Wish we had teenagers at home so we could talk about this book, but I am hoping the series will be optioned for TV. It is that good!

I have loved all books by Jennifer Lynn Barnes and this one was no exception! I was hooked from the very first chapter and I loved how distinct the voice of Avery was. I loved meeting the large cast of characters that all had their set of quirks, and the mystery aspect was impeccable! There were so many sub-mysteries that were woven into the main mystery of why Avery has inherited this fortune, and it had me losing my mind! In a good way! It was all wrapped up so well, yet a massive cliffhanger at the end has me eager for the next one!

I read The Inheritance Games based on the raving reviews across the booktok and booktube community. I did more research on it and thought "this is my kind of book" and it was...until I read it. This book was quite of a bore and did not keep me engaged as I thought it would. Yes, it does have that Knives Out aspects where the rich man disinherits his family and wills his fortune to basically a stranger while setting up a whole bout involving clues which he set up himself but that is all it had. I found the story to be monotonous, the romance forced, and too many characters that was supposed to serve a purpose but did not.
