On the 12, the nose is absolutely beautiful. Upfront is hazelnut, honey, and malt with sherry red fruits and coconut underneath. There is lots of chocolate strawberry, oak, cinnamon, and orange zest that appear as the whisky opens up.The palate is far less exciting compared to the nose. It starts very dessert driven with marzipan, butter, ginger snap cookie, graham crackers, and caramel apple. The mid transitions into baked nuts like pecan pie and candied walnuts. The finish is dry and ends with oak, mild sherry mustiness, clove, allspice, and almond toffee with faint heat and walnut waxiness that trails off.Overall this is amazing whisky. It’s a blend of sherry and European oak casks and the quality is phenomenal. For 86 proof, the flavors are robust and rich. ... MoreOn the 12, the nose is absolutely beautiful. Macallan products tend to run pretty high in price but this is no disappointment.

I wanted to find another single malt for diversity as I have been drinking 12 year old Aberlour, which is still a favorite. For my tastes, the 12 year old Macallan Double Cask is ideal. (remembering smell and taste are subjective). This whisky is flavorful and smooth with barely any bite. Scotch on the rocks is how I prefer to drink it, and doing so seems to bring out the vanilla, cinnamon, and buttery caramel flavors. I like that it isn't peaty as well. I would recommend this scotch to someone who has never tried a single malt. Despite being slightly more expensive, it offers excellent value for the services it provides.

It's fine. I always thought scotch was different than whiskey, turns out it's just whiskey from Scotland. Like champagne and tequila how they have those names only based on regional. This tastes good, smooth. I like it with water, they recommend room temp. I prefer Canadian whiskey but this is good. I might re buy in the future.
I've sampled Macallan Twelves for over 30 yrs. I keep small samples of various whiskies thru the years under nitrogen in a climate controlled frig. It's still a good pick, if you like Speyside malt styles. But like a lot of whiskies, they've made slight process and sourcing changes over the years that probably increased efficiencies at the price of taste. Most may not recognize the subtle nuance changes from year to year, but over time they do add up. My speculative guess is they take a slightly large cut from the distillate heart nowadays and try to make it up the taste with aging and blending. What they produced 30 years ago was 'great' for its style. Today it is merely 'good.' Be warned whiskey snobs.
Macallan 12 Double Cask is an impressive Scotch compared to most other 12’s on the market. I prefer The Yamazaki and the Balvenie over this one. Do not get me wrong, I am on my 5th bottle of it.The greatest thing about Scotch is the experience and like all experiences, it’s different for everyone.I like to think of myself as more of a Scotch explorer than a connoisseur. One of the things I like most about Scotch is the variety and variations from one to the other. This includes year over year as Scotch varies from one year to the next. Over time, my preference of one to another changes. As an example, my favorite daily drinker for years was the Lagavulin 16, a fine smoky Scotch with plenty of complexity, a worthy spot in anyone’s collection. As an example, my favorite daily drinker for years was the Lagavulin 16, a fine smoky Scotch with plenty of complexity, a worthy spot in anyone’s collection. Most recently the Balvenie 12 Doublewood has claimed my daily drinker spot although the Walker 15 sneaks in every now and again. The Macallan 18 which for some reason (maybe it’s because I do not drink it that often), always makes my top spot. It’s just a really good Scotch. I mix it up as to how I take it depending on what experience I want to have. Neat is great for those times when you want the deep notes from the woods and are looking for the real deal. I usually take it on the rocks so that the flavors smooth out a bit and I can get more complexity from the Scotch. The only time I put a splash in is if the alcohol content is high to take the bite off. My older reviews were listed as 1KoolDad but for some reason this site will not let me use my own “Nickname” anymore.

I enjoy rye and bourbon a lot. I recently made the decision to try scotch. My father, a hefty scotch consumer, advised me to buy this bottle. Sincerely, I wasn't a big fan of it at first. For me, it was a little too soft. I put the bottle away for a few weeks, then when I opened it again, WOW! I noticed something there that I had previously missed. Smooth and lovely best describe it. Excellent nose and finish. I found it hard to believe my initial disappointment. You'll really like this if you like bourbons like Angels Envy.
After having tried both Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12 and Highland Park 12, I bought this MacAllan 12 Yr double cask expecting something better and was let down. Sherry barrel aging in Speysides typically impart the almost prune-like sweet character from the Pedro Ximenez grapes' influence, but this is lacking in the MacAllan. Bourbon barrel aging usually produces vanilla, baking spice and caramel notes, but these are also lacking in the MacAllan. The peat element of the MacAllan manifests as an unpleasant bitterness, and the alcoholic burn is stronger than competitors. The qualities don't play nicely in the MacAllan, like a band that has rehearsed their parts well but the instruments are poorly mixed by the soundman during their live performance, creating a less than stellar experience for the audience who paid top dollar for their tickets. The sweet, prune-like, cigar tobacco-like aromas and the vanilla and baking spice elements present in Glenfiddich 12, paired with its comparable smoothness going down, makes it a far more desirable Speyside than this MacAllan, which is much harsher and less pleasant on the tongue in comparison. Odd because their production processes are very similar.
On the nose, the Macallan 12 Year Double Cask has a sweet and fruity aroma with notes of honey, caramel, and dried fruit. Upon tasting, the whisky is well-balanced with a creamy mouthfeel and flavors of vanilla, toffee, and cinnamon, followed by a long, warm finish with hints of oak and spice. It is a well-balanced, smooth, and complex whisky that is perfect for sipping on its own or paired with your favorite cigar or dessert. Highly recommended!
