Good for travel, maybe not for school.

I have had this backpack for over 3 years, has held up exceptionally well, however, the laptop sleeve opening is at best 10" wide, NOT 12". My laptop could not fit. There is NO padding at the bottom, which has caused damage to books and my laptop over time. There is minimal structure to the bag beside the back, meaning it will fall over CONSTANTLY when not being worn. This bag can protect and carry a small- medium laptop or tablet. Great storage and durability, but misleading description and measurements.

I've only had this pack a short time. I bought it as a replacement for my "messenger" style shoulder bag for use on an upcoming trip. The primary reason was to keep my hands free while going through airports and to keep my essentials with me during flights. The pack easily holds my laptop, charger and extension cord, a large selection of accessory cables, an old-school notebook, pens and markers, sunglasses, reading glasses, and other gadgets. There's still room left over books I plan to read while traveling, travel documents, external mouse, with more room for things accumulated along the way. Plus there are two external pouches for water bottles or stashing anything you wouldn't mind losing. And that brings me to why I can't give this a full five stars. I wanted more zippered pockets on the inside. I solved this problem by putting related small items into heavy duty ziplock bags, but I miss the simplicity of a zippered compartment. I would have also liked to see some internal anchor points for small carabiners to hold keys and the like. The other weak point is extended use comfort. I plan to use this going through airports and making ground connection, and it does allow my hands to be free, so it meets my biggest goal. It feels stiff on my back, but comfortable enough for how I intend to use it. Despite North Face calling this a "day pack", I would not suggest it for an extended day of wearing it while doing something active.Keeping these few limitations in mind, I think this will be a travel companion for quite a long time. Well made and seemingly durable, this a high value purchase. Call this a 4½ Star rating.

I would not buy this product again.

Unless you're only planning on carrying 2 notebooks and a computer I don't recommend this bag. The second pocket is very poorly designed if you want to actually put stuff in it. When you fully unzip the second pocket the whole pocket just flaps down which makes anything in the main part of that pocket fall out. There is almost no access to the bottom of the main pocket because the top part is so compact. Because of the inaccessibility of the bottom part of the main pocket, this gives makes the bag look weird from the outside and makes it unable to stand up on its own if you sit it on the ground. I'm about to buy my second Jester backpack
2 September 2024

I've had a jester backpack for 10 years. I'm only replacing it after I found a small, dime sized hole in the bottom.I have been on over 100 flights, earned three degrees, visited three continents, gone on multiple vacations, and gotten 3 jobs while using this backpack on a daily basis.I've never had any damage to any laptop I've kept in the laptop sleeve while using this bag. I never had personal possessions stolen from me while studying partially because this backpack was always comfortable enough to take to the bathroom. I've never lost a textbook or notebook or regular book to water damage while using this bag. I've never had any clothing I kept in this backpack ruined.I've been able to carry any water bottle I've had smaller than 1L (and some bigger.) This ... MoreI've had a jester backpack for 10 years. Pathetic design of the upper pocket makes this bag very bad.

Pathetic design of the upper pocket makes this bag very bad. It's difficult to explain, unfortunately I bought this bag inspite of several review comments about the exact same aspect not being good. I still bought as nothing seemed a problem from the photos, however the upper pocket really is a spoiler. It creates 2 problems at a very high level of review: (1) it makes the bag look very bad from outside when the upper pocket is stuffed with some stuff, however if the lower pocket is not 100% stuffed, the upper part of the bag will bulge out and bottom portion will cave in, and it looks really absurd / odd. (2) upper pocket really blocks your way to reach the bottom of the main bag compartment easily. I have never seen such a poor design of any backpack. Perfect high school back pack!
19 January 2024

This is the second time we’ve purchased this bag as it was absolutely perfect for the job! My daughter has been using it for over three years every school day. We only purchased again as the drink bottle pockets wore thru, and I’ve seen they have made these stronger! It has a padded area for laptops, pockets for books to remain intact and not fold and quality straps for an ergonomic fit (although like most teenagers, she wears it low grrrr!)We used to buy standard backpacks from surf shops or Kmart etc and they would only last a year, this lasted over 3 years of constant use and could still be used for 3 more without the bottles holders.Extremely strong and worth the money, highly recommend!

I use this bag for college and walk about 15 minutes twice a day with it on my back and about 10kg of stuff in it. Very comfortable for the walk and I don't feel the weight.Great laptop compartment for 15" laptop only. Laptop kind of catches on the zip opening as you remove, as it's at the back of the compartment. Space in next section for papers, organisers etc. It's a very large space so suitable for big things, or stuff in containers. Would be lovely to have organiser webbing or a couple of small pockets on the front of this area.At the front is the stationery pocket, which holds a few pens and cards. Not a great pocket - the opening flips down so you open fully while the bag is laid flat - I don't know anyone who opens a bag flat in college - anything loose ... MoreI use this bag for college and walk about 15 minutes twice a day with it on my back and about 10kg of stuff in it. It would be nice to have another pocket on the front flap with organiser webbing to fit more stuff and keep it more secure. There's a zipper compartment here which is a good place to keep a purse when in crowds.I carry a full 650ml water bottle and 450ml coffee cup in the side pockets - still as good as they started after a month of use.I used the bag several times in heavy rain - water falls off it but it's not classed as waterproof, I tend to leave it to drip off if I can before opening and haven't had any damage to laptop or papers as yet.I'm still finding little features - the spot to hook a bike light, the various reflectors for increased visibility, that the bungee is actually for sticking extra stuff in.

Reduces back pain but isn't as functional as I hoped

I got this backpack because of the padded straps and back panel. I needed a chiropractic backpack for high school because my Jansport backpack wasn't cutting it. To give you an idea, with 2-3 textbooks, 7 binders, 4 folders, a computer and its charger, a notebook, a reading book, etc. my Jansport backpack weighted ~30lbs and I could fit additional items including gym shoes, gym clothes, snacks, and loose school supplies. It was so heavy that I was having back problems.I have to say, the Jester backpack is very comfortable and the weight of what I can carry now is tolerable. I am happy with its simplicity but the back support is the only reason why I'm keeping it. I am happy with its simplicity but the back support is the only reason why I'm keeping it. I can fit a Chromebook, 2 textbooks, 7 thin plastic folders, 1 notebook, and one reading book in the main compartment. I can't use any binders for AP classes because they don't fit. I will have to bring a lunch box and gym bag separately to school, which is exactly what I wanted to avoid. As a busy student who takes everything to and from home every day, I need all of my supplies in one space. There are design flaws as well. Due to the small front compartment for loose knickknacks like pens, there is more weight on the top of the backpack. This means that 1) the main compartment is harder to access because of its bulkiness, and 2) with both compartments unzipped, the front one will fold over and all of my contents will spill out because the mesh pockets are too short and loose. That being said, I like the zippers. They are quality and I knew when I received the bag that the zippers were going to last a long time. There isn't any zipper cover that's going to get stuck or caught. I also like the laptop sleeve, but unfortunately it doesn't fit my older 15" long Chromebook. However, 13" computers will fit perfectly. I like the double water bottle pockets as well. I cannot emphasize enough how comfortable this backpack is carrying between classes. Unfortunately, it is not as useful as I hoped and am going to have to look for something bigger next year. If you are looking for something that will hold the entire amount of contents I mentioned regarding my old Jansport backpack, please look at the Patagonia Refugio 30L!

Sadly one of the worst backpacks I own
15 February 2024

Backpack for travel because I wanted the side pockets for my water bottle. Unfortunately, if you actually fill this backpack all the way full, the water bottle falls out the side. The top pocket seems like a good idea but if that is full, it becomes top-heavy and your entire backpack flops open when you open the main compartment. There is more room at the bottom of the backpack but once it starts getting full, it's really hard to zipper. I love Northface and have a ton of their backpacks. This one was just a fail for me.

old back pack design was better

I was gifted my jester back pack as a replacement, because my old borealis backpack was very worn from everyday use. It was my best backpack to date, as it held up longer than any other backpack I had and had good features. I am very sad to say the new editions are a down grade. I haven't had my backpack for very long so I can't speak to it's longevity but this back pack has no structure. I can't leave the front pocket open without everything falling out due to it's top heaviness. If I have the slightest gap in the zippers it is guaranteed to open fully while walking. Also, this design isn't as comfortable. It seems the ditched practicality for a sleeker and more modern design. I would have been a repeat customer for this backpack but the new editions just can't ... MoreI was gifted my jester back pack as a replacement, because my old borealis backpack was very worn from everyday use.
