I purchased this backpack to fit to needs: an everyday backpack for work (laptop, journal, memo pad, files, iPad, misc mobile office stuff) and a travel backpack for overnights or weekend car trips. This backpack was hands down the best pick I could’ve made. The front compartment is where I keep my iPad, misc cords, pens/pencils, business cards, earbuds, and snack bars. I don’t use the phone pouch hardly at all, usually just for sunglasses. The main compartment is very roomy and currently manages large textbooks for grad school w/o a problem. The back compartment securely holds my laptop in a well cushioned sleeve. The cinch straps on the sides really help manage loads of various sizes. The elastic on the front is great for holding a lightweight jacket into as well. Lastly, the shoulder straps are very comfortable and provide enough adjustments to fit my frame. I am a short guy at 5’6”, broad shoulders, and bigger chest. Most things tend to be too long either in torso or arm length when they fit my chest/shoulders. This backpack does ride low on my back at times, but I don’t wear it cinched down to ride higher either. In 3 years, the only wear I’ve seen so far is a small hole in the netting on a side pocket. Elastic has kept well, the nylon material is holding strong, and the straps are good as new. This backpack has been used daily for almost 3 years and I expect it to last another 5 at least. If you are on the fence about it, just buy it and thank me later…

This bag has been tasked with every scenario known to mankind and has outperformed them all.The only reason I've come to write this review is because I am in the market for a backpack that can hold a new 17'' laptop as I'm replacing the one I purchased when I bought the Borealis. If you're looking for a super solid, strong, comfortable, versatile backpack that can withstand the rigors of your everyday then seriously look no further and purchase this backpack. I didn't know I made a lifelong investment at the young age I bought this backpack and the amount of lessons she continues to teach me are invaluable. She might not be holding my laptop in the near future but she is nowhere near retirement. I anticipate she's here for the long haul through the longest days and latest nights when the going gets tough.Thank you North Face for truly providing something so reliable and dependable at an affordable price for the young boy I was.It really is a lifelong companion...treat the bag with best intentions and the return will outweigh the cost, tenfold.

I have been using a Borealis for around 10yrs which is still going strong. I recently bought the new model which I really like but also needed another rucksack for work so decided to buy the classic thinking it would be similar to the others. Was I wrong. They have stripped this right back in terms of the quality. The zips used are inferior in quality and not YKK, there are no fleece lined pockets, the mesh bottle holder is really flimsy, the straps are really thin and very uncomfortable compared to the other bags as well as the top handle. All in all it's really disappointing and nothing like the others. however, there are good range of storage options in the bag. If you are after a Borealis, I would definitely opt for the new version as it's worlds apart. It's a ... MoreI have been using a Borealis for around 10yrs which is still going strong. This was an impulse purchase a year ago after falling in love with the Black Melange color in-store, eyeballing the features, and trying it on. The first two hold up: it is still very beautiful, and the pockets are plentiful all with a durable build. I used it for travel to Egypt/Tanzania/safari. What I dislike so much about it is its shape! The pockets in the front compartment are great in theory, but when actually utilized and filled up, you realize that the depth of that compartment is shallow and so bulks up the upper half of the backpack. So when the main compartment is also reasonably filled up, and you try to sit the bag upright, that top front compartment weighs it down forward. In order to attempt to even this out, you really have to fill up the very bottom ... MoreThis was an impulse purchase a year ago after falling in love with the Black Melange color in-store, eyeballing the features, and trying it on. So when the main compartment is also reasonably filled up, and you try to sit the bag upright, that top front compartment weighs it down forward. In order to attempt to even this out, you really have to fill up the very bottom of the main compartment (aka shove them deep down in there lol), but that makes those items so difficult to access. The straps as well are problematic. They are so incredibly stiff! You try putting it on, but the shape of the pack forces you to wear it high on the back like the model in the picture, so you need to tighten straps once it's on. If your pack is quite full and heavy, and you try to take it off without loosening the straps first, you will struggle, and maybe even hurt yourself like I have... bruising and scraping my arm. Also, it keeps this shape conforming to your back bc there is apparently a sheet of metal in there, which explains why it's such a heavy backpack for its size when empty. The straps were stiff when I tried in the store, but assumed they would break in a bit - never did. Overall truly hate but cannot return. For the money spent, I do still try to use, but only if I know I'm not going to be actively taking it on and off.
I bought this bag primarily to carry my laptop and other personal items/electronics while travelling. It is a great size as a "personal item" for air travel, and I've found it fits well under all airplane seats I've come across. The laptop pocket in the rear comfortably fits a 15.6" laptop in a padded sleeve. It would likely fit a 17" laptop without a sleeve but it would be a tight fit. The interior layout is well organized with a combination of large pocket for bulky items and a divided front pocket for power cords, mouse mat & other items. The build quality is great for a North Face product, the zippers in particular are better than some on my more hiking/backpacking oriented packs.Another strength of this pack is that it can double as a light duty day pack for ... MoreI bought this bag primarily to carry my laptop and other personal items/electronics while travelling. I previously owned a black/gold detail Borealis backpack, which I had for 3 years. This backpack remained in perfect condition, except for one very frustrating detail which other reviewers have noted- the mesh on the side pockets tore through in the first year of owning it. This is the worst quality about this backpack. I use the side pockets frequently for quick access and the fact that they wear out so quickly is such a let down. I repurchased this backpack in the TNF Black Heather/Silver Reflective (btw- this does look like the picture, it is a true black and not heather like the item description- I was hoping it would look like the pic so I am pleased). I wanted a style update and to get a new one so the pockets are fixed. If TNF had some sort of free/fast ... MoreI previously owned a black/gold detail Borealis backpack, which I had for 3 years. If TNF had some sort of free/fast repair service even JUST for the side pockets, or if they replaced it with a sturdier material, this would be a flawless backpack. If I could repair the side pockets at a TNF store (maybe you can but I'm not sure) I might have this backpack for 10 years or more. I even purchased a different water bottle in the hopes that it would stop the side pockets of my new backpack from wearing down.It is a great backpack for school and fits everything I need. I have taken this thing across the world and used it as a personal item for flights and I can fit everything I need for a weekend in it. I've used it for hikes and daytrips and it is comfortable to wear all day. I really like the versatility of this bag, not only in function but in appearance. When you use it as a hiking backpack, it makes sense aesthetically- when you use it for school, it makes sense- when you use it for travel, it makes sense. Basically, you never look like you are carrying this ridiculous out of place backpack, no matter what you are using it for.Overall it is a very nice bag and a good investment piece for any wardrobe.
I bought the Borealis for my daughter as her daily high school backpack. It is on the smaller side. It works for her as it has a padded space for her laptop and enough room for a small binder and other necessities. But there is not enough room to add a lunch or a large binder. The bottom does expand for a bit more room and the water bottle pockets are also expandable and fit a large water bottle. The pack is sturdy, although the lining did rip on the first day of use. Moosejaw customer service is amazing!
I really wanted to ignore the reviews on this backpack and love it. But man I really regret buying this backpack. Overall it's really cute (I got the all teal color) but the middle pocket is so poorly designed. Usually backpacks have one main big pocket, one medium pocket, and a small one for maybe headphones or small items. Well the middle pocket stops midway down the backpack. I normally keep my keys, wallet, coin purse, medicine, laptop charger, and charger in this pocket in any other backpack. But I can barely fit half of those things because the depth is honestly unacceptably shallow. And because it only goes midway, when I open the main pocket of my backpack the front just flops to the ground and everything sitting right at the top of the main pocket falls out ... MoreI really wanted to ignore the reviews on this backpack and love it. And because it only goes midway, when I open the main pocket of my backpack the front just flops to the ground and everything sitting right at the top of the main pocket falls out (such as pencil pouch). Honestly if the middle pocket was deeper or they had two muddle pockets (one on top and one on bottom which would also probably fix any weight distribution problems that I think they were very terribly attempting to fix when they decided a shallow middle pocket) I actually would like this backpack. It just does not fit everything I need it to fit. And on top of that, because the middle pocket only goes halfway, all my spirals in the main pocket get smushed under the ridge of the middle pocket. Everything gets stuck in that area that wouldn't even exist if they had just made the pocket deeper. AND it's not comfortable because most of the weight is now at the top/middle of my backpack because of the shallow middle pocket and it strains my back really badly. I seriously wanted to like this but I really wouldn't recommend this backpack unless they fix the flawed design they have.
Ehhhh…could be better. It’s the “accessories” pocket that killed it for me. Not the very front one, but the one behind it with the pen pockets, etc. it made the whole backpack way too too heavy. I wish that pocket was a full 3rd pocket. Sure it’s designed to hold an iPad or book, pens. Whatever, but it made the weight distribute uncomfortably, and if I sat it down on the ground or whatever, it would fall over. I tried it in 3 situations: my personal item for airplanes - SOOOOO uncomfy. A short weekend road trip - didn’t fit much. And also for work and it was just off for each situation. So I returned it. Bummer cuz the quality and color way is rad. Just don’t make too heavy pockets! Theres a reason Jansport and traditional backpacks but accessories pockets at the ... MoreEhhhh…could be better. I would say this bookbag is great, but I'm a bit unhappy with the new design. I enjoy the looks of the design a lot, but I have some things to point out. If you have a little bit of bulky items (Like a simple planner) and put it in the organizer pocket it will lessen the space in the main compartment. That was a huge bummer for me since I tend to add lots of stuff in that pocket and with the older design I never had that problem. I enjoy that the main compartment got larger but that only works if you really push your items in their with all compartments full or there's just nothing in the organizer pocket. The front fleece lined pocket got smaller because of the organizer pocket which I really didn't like, but I believe the pocket got wider (think of the pocket ... MoreI would say this bookbag is great, but I'm a bit unhappy with the new design. The front fleece lined pocket got smaller because of the organizer pocket which I really didn't like, but I believe the pocket got wider (think of the pocket being more rectangular shaped now). I didn't like that too much since that was honestly my favorite pocket that's now ruined in my opinion. My favorite pocket of this bookbag is the new separate laptop compartment which is much easier to access now for my situation. I like having the much larger water bottle pockets which desperately needed an upgrade, longer compression straps, the little strap on top of the shoulder straps which I'm not quite sure if it works as they've marketed it. The longer and larger bungee cord to hold much more. Honestly this bookbag depends on you. What your gonna be carrying, how much your gonna be carrying. This bookbag Is great quality made with extremely durable materials so don't expect it to rip in two seconds. If you really want this bookbag and are willing to pay the high price for it then just get it. If your not sure then just think of it logically, like what your gonna be carrying and that sorta thing. I'm not telling you to buy this product or to not buy it. I'm just helping you lean in the direction that you feel better with. Personally I've grown to enjoy it and now that the pockets are a bit limited in some ways I've learn to carry less :)
