I was really looking forward to this coat. I have plenty of down puffers but needed something just as warm as a puffer but with added wind and water resistance for commuting in rain and snow. This parka checked all those boxes. All but one, actually; Fit. I read reviews online that said this coat ran large so I purposely sized down to a small to accommodate AND I purposely wore a heavier sweatshirt when I tried it on and it was STILL baggy. No aspect of the coat seemed to fit well except the hood. Even the sleeves are unusually wide. My hands looked like little doll hands sticking out of them. Ultimately, this coat was just too big for me and I had to return it. Otherwise it seems like a great coat. If only it didn't fit like a sleeping bag. TNF seems to be lacking ... This is the second item in a row I've gotten this year that I ended up returning because of either design or quality. I hope this isn't the new standard for North Face. These items are too expensive to not be near perfect.

I was in need of a new parka for very cold weather use as the previous one I used and loved for years was finally starting to fall apart. After quite a bit of research and consideration, I landed on the McMurdo as the one that fit my needs and wants and I was able to get a relatively good price. So far I have not been disappointed. It fits really well and feels accurate to size, with enough flexibility and space to add layers if needed. It also has a lot of pockets and storage. One of the features that I didn't know initially until I received it was the plush lined side pockets in addition to the zipper pockets visible on the front. Overall it is easily worth the price and I would consider it among the top three parkas in it's price range that would have to recommend.

Just arrived and I'm pretty disappointed at 3 things about the coat. It's a very big large. I'm a bit over 6 foot and nearly 200 lbs and the large is much bigger than the quoted size guide numbers. It says 42-44 which if accurate is perfect for me. Basically, made for a fat guy with kinda short arms. There is no waist drawstring (or whatever you call it) that's just insane to me that they would not include one. Insane. Especially considering that it's oversized. And sort of in line with my last point is the hood depth isn't adjustable. A lot of jackets I've had in the past will either have an elastic style cord or some type of velcro flap that you can customize for your head size. Nothing on this.Overall, warm yes, waterproof yes, but I'm probably going to ... MoreJust arrived and I'm pretty disappointed at 3 things about the coat. It's a very big large. The warmest winter parka I've ever owned. I researched every high end brand online and this is hands down the best value in winter parkas. If you don't mind the boxy style this jacket is the best deal around. The faux fur keeps the wind and snow out of your face. The velcro might seem lower end than other jacket's hardware but it's easy to seal and does a better job at keeping the elements out. Everything seems very durable and well made. PLENTY of pockets. Comes down low enough to cover your behind. The downsides? I wish the hand warming pockets were better located: they're placed too high up to comfortably keep your hands in. However it's no big deal because I usually wear winter gloves anyway. I also wish the fur wasn't as easy to remove as it got detached by ... MoreThe warmest winter parka I've ever owned. I wish the hand warming pockets were better located: they're placed too high up to comfortably keep your hands in. However it's no big deal because I usually wear winter gloves anyway. I also wish the fur wasn't as easy to remove as it got detached by mistake a couple of times. That said it's super easy to put it back on so no biggie either. Lastly I wish there was a way to cinch the bottom so cold air wouldn't creep up but that's not a big concern either. Do make sure to size down because it sizes very big. I normally wear medium and am glad I ordered a small. Even the small fits me a bit loosely, which is fine for layering.
In no way am I trying to insult company NorthFace. I've been a customer for over 20 years. I have always praised their products. In my honest opinion, this new version isn't your best work. It feels more like a shell material this time around. I'm a big dude. 6'4 275lbs. I desire something more durable, like your previous version of the McMurdo. This one makes me feel like I need to be extra careful not to snag it on something every time I move. The Velcro seems so weak. I hope in the future, you'll recognize you had an awesome parka and revert back to the old model. I know with time comes change, but if it isn't broken...don't fix it.
I’m 6’4” so the XL was perfect fit forMe. Arrived right before a massive Midwest winter storm last week. Almost too warm to use while shoveling and snow blowing. the fir hood blocked all the snow flying around. Next day it dropped to -10 and that’s when the coat showed its true colors. It’s Very warm for clearing the car and walking to work, walking the dog, or just being outside for a long time. I plan on taking it skiing and snowmobiling as it is relatively water proof and wind proof. Plus it’s very stylish and received over a dozen compliments. The outter part of the jacket is more durable then my $600 Mountain Hardware coat that my dog ripped with her paws. This jacket can take a beating. I bought the Men's McMurdo Parka to wear as a one-and-done jacket to throw on over my t-shirt when picking up kids from school or for when I just don't feel like layering. This Parka is very warm, waterproof and wind proof. All the pockets provide ample storage for my phone, keys, wallet ect. The hood fits my head well and being able to remove the fur is a nice feature. The sleeve length is fine and a medium fits me. However, It is a loose fitting parka. For reference I am 5'9 tall and I weigh 175 pounds with a big chest and arms. In conclusion, It's a big, warm, comfortable parka that is best suited for freezing temperatures below 32 degrees but is nice to have for those cold days that I just want to grab one coat and not dress in layers.
I'm searching for a winter coat to keep me warm in Colorado winters. I bought TNF's McMurdo parka and other options from Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, Jack Wolfskin, Outdoor Research, and Eddie Bauer. TNF is very clear that the McMurdo has 600-fill-power down, but when you're evaluating warmth, it's also very helpful to know the down-fill weight (meaning, how much of the 600-fill-power down is packet into the jacket). When I contacted them, literally every other company - no kidding, every single one - helpfully shared the fill weights for their jackets, but TNF refused, saying that info was "proprietary". That was a very disappointing, non-customer-focused answer from TNF. Eddie Bauer has a very similar-looking down parka to the McMurdo, but it has 650-fill-power down ... I have a lot of puffers for hiking but wanted something super warm yet waterproof and windproof for commuting in wintery conditions. This parka checked all the boxes. However I was not expecting this coat to be so baggy. Both the sleeves and body of the coat feel oversized. I knew from reading reviews that it ran large so I purposely sized down to a small but it's still too big. even the sleeves and sleeve cuffs are goofy wide, making my hands look like little doll hands by sticking out. What was TNF thinking here? You pretty much have to use the Velcro cuff tabs to tighten them. Otherwise cold air will go right up your sleeve. This would be the ultimate winter parka if it just fit a little more snugly. Unfortunately though, I will be returning this coat. TNF needs ... I have a lot of TNF gear from over the years and I have to say I've always liked the quality of their stuff until recently. This is the third thing in a row this year that I was disappointed with and ended up returning. Not thrilled with TNFs design and quality as of late. This stuff is too expensive to not be near perfect.
My wife purchased the Women's Arctic Parka in January, 2023, I purchased the McMurdo Expedition Parka in February. With 700 fill, this is by far the warmest piece of clothing I've ever worn. I originally bought an XL which swallowed me up. In a surprisingly easy and friendly return process I was able to get a large parka in a short period of time. As a XP pass member your customer service representatives were kind, understanding and very patient while answering all my questions. The parka is extremely warm, wearing it in my SUV, I have to turn the heater off. It is completely comfortable, with great range of motion and doesn't feel at all bulky. The zippers are easy to use while the hood provides protection and comfort. In December I bought a regular McMurdo, and ... We got through the 2023 Michigan Ice Storm, 3 days without power with no concern for our warmth & comfort. Amazing, durable, tactical and comfortable. A wonderful piece of winter kit for protecting my old bones. Thanks Guys.
