I use this bag as a day back, particularly if carrying did more than just me (partner). The huge dual side pockets come in great where to store two water bottles, and I love the heavy weighted design with partial stretch. My osprey bag has two mesh stretch pockets which both ripped after a couple of years. The pockets are great (one main compartment, fanatastic laptop section, largish front pocket and two roomy easy access pockets), the material is 10/10, the bag is comfortable and the handles are durable. PLEASE buy the North Face waterproof cover. Fits great in one of the east access pockets and will keep you covered :)The ONLY downfall in my view, is that the airflow isn't great... so expect a sweaty back on hikes and long days out in the sun.I love the ... MoreI use this bag as a day back, particularly if carrying did more than just me (partner). I bought this bag looking for TNF's largest casual style bag, which tops out at 40L. It has a bigger shape and silhouette versus the more popular recon and surge, and has the benefit of being able to be tightened down to maintain a slim look.Pros: My everyday bag was actually my work Tumi backpack but I found its lack of capacity and comfort lacking; although it's professional looking. The router is clean enough on the outside to still pass as professional without all the pockets, straps and webbing of the surge and recon. The padding and comfort are great and I appreciate that I can also pack for a weekend trip in this bag along with my work items. Like an iPad mini.Cons: I wish that admin pocket extended more - maybe even halfway down. Also wish the pockets there were deeper or had zipper enclosures. On the front, once you open the flap there are open mesh pockets which I also wish were zipper because stuff slides out easily.

Purchased the Borealis and another model as well but they were just too small.

Great bag with annoying Zippers
13 August 2023

I needed a bigger bag for my day to day and went for the Router. I really do like it for its overall design, size and layout but my main Con for it is very annoying.Pros:Fits everything you need and has plenty of space. The Laptop sleeve protects your electronics well and has a fair enough off set to not have them slam the ground when putting your bag on the ground. The front lower zipper has plenty of cargo space for quick access and is great for chargers/cords etc.The side pockets fit a Nalgene bottle comfortably and are deep enough for other smaller things to not spill over when moving about.Cons:The zipper design and material design for the zippers causes the zipper to grab material too often leading to stuck zippers. The material is too flimsy and the zippers often collapse and will grab the liner material from inside and bunch up. I've had a few instances when I first got my bag where I thought I was going to have to rip material to un jam the zipper. This is a great bag with amazing space, fit, and pockets for the price and size. I give it three stars as the zippers catch about every other day for me and it gets annoying trying to get them unstuck.

This bag is very comfortable and roomy, there is adequate space for anything you need, I can. fit a 13in laptop, tablet, lunch bag, and jacket with ease with still lots of space left. I really enjoy the 2 dedicated laptop compartments in the back of the bag and the straps that run along the bottom of the bag to reduce the depth volume. I can say this bag takes weight very well, I have a Recon and once loaded that bag kills my back, but this large bag distributes the weight nice and evenly. This bag is nearly perfect expect 2 things that I dislike. First is that the fleece lined sunglasses zip pocket behind the logo in the front of the bag as an opening that can allow items to fall out if not properly zipped up. First is that the fleece lined sunglasses zip pocket behind the logo in the front of the bag as an opening that can allow items to fall out if not properly zipped up. I almost lost my AirPods in that pocket since I didn't have it zipped properly. Another issue I have with the bag is the water bottle holders on the side of the bags. Terrible design as they only properly work if the bag is full like shown in the product photos. If not, there are super loose with no elastic band to keep them tight to the bag. Good luck keeping a water bottle on the ease for easy access, won't happen, I don't know why they couldn't make the water bottle holders deeper and made out of elastic mesh so that you can ACTUALLY use them in 99% of the time. Those are my only gripes with the bag, other than that it is pretty awesome, I have no desire to reach for another bag unless I am looking for reliable, easy and quick water bottle access on the outside of my bag in which I reach for my TNF Recon bag.

I bought a new blue North Face Router backpack to replace an old red Surge backpack by North Face that I had since January 2008. I have grown attached to my old backpack since I travelled the world with it. I found in many ways the old backpack had much superior construction and better features than the new one. The zippers were tucked under a flap hidden from view. The pull cords were much thicker and terminated with an easy to grip tab. The side pockets were made of a strong mesh and had a pull cord that could tighten to prevent smaller items from falling out. Thick loops on the back of the backpack and rings on the front shoulder straps could be used to tie or clip it to additional carry items. I did not find any of these features on the new Surge that my daughter has or the new Router that I got. I didn't find the layout of the pockets of either new backpack to be as good as my old backpack, but maybe I was just used to the older layout. The new Router is slightly bigger than the new surge, so that is why I chose the Surge this time. The Router is still a well constructed back pack, but North Face decided to to pinch pennies on its construction and it seems more geared to city slickers than the outdoor. So I'm a bit disappointed that I got a run of the mill item and not the quality that North Face built it's reputation on. The reputation that used to symbolize the rugged outdoor.

I was hesitant to buy it due to the steep price. However, the backpack is amazing. It is very spacious and good quality. I use it to pack up everything for a normal work and uni day: it fits my laptop, couple of notebooks, large water bottle, gym shoes and gym kit, a lunch and snacks, headphones and everything else I need for a full day. It sits nicely on the back even when very full, although it doesnt provide much ventilation. Best thing is that when the bag is only half full, it doesn't look massive, its overall quite sleek. I've also used it for full day hikes, beach days and as a under-the-seat carry-on for flights. The pockets are all nice and spacious with lots of organization. Its missing a paper sleeve in the main pocket, but the laptop pocket offers essentialy two spaces for a laptop and an additional space for a tablet, making up for this. The side pockets for water are surprisingly large and stretchy. The straps underneath the bag are an extra bonus for any loose coats.

I currently have an Osprey Nebula 34 - they don't make this exact pack any longer. It's 10+ years old, has been dragged all over the world, and used almost every day. I didn't want to go down to a smaller pack, so I thought I'd give the NF Router 40L a chance. Upon arrival I quickly started emptying out my old Nebula and transfering items to the Router. I wasn't even 1/2 way through and new this wasn't the pack for me. The laptop compartment is tight and fits only the laptop and maybe 1 full size notebook..snugly. Finally - the lined pocket is essentially upside down. The bulk of the pocket is ABOVE the zipper - so whatever you put in there (phone, sunglasses) has a high probablity of falling out. Last bit - this pack doesn't even slightly seem like a 40L pack - maybe 28L. SO - the Router is going back. I did watch several video reviews before buying because this pack was not available to check out locally. Hope this helps someone else avoid the return shipping cost.
