The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult
An astonishing novel about redemption and forgiveness from number one bestselling author, Jodi Picoult. Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the day’s breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mother’s death. When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sage’s grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Despite their differences, they see in each other the hidden scars that others can’t, and they become companions. Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secret—one that nobody else in town would ever suspect—and asks Sage for an extraordinary favour. If she says yes, she faces not only moral repercussions, but potentially legal ones as well. With her own identity suddenly challenged, and the integrity of the closest friend she’s ever had clouded, Sage begins to question the assumptions and expectations she’s made about her life and her family. When does a moral choice become a moral imperative? And where does one draw the line between punishment and justice, forgiveness and mercy?

Great book. Author did a lot of research to write this fictional account about characters entwined in the holocaust from past to present ... Reading it breaks your heart to think that such evil could be committed against fellow peoples and whether forgiveness could be granted to those who committed such atrocities.

The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult is a beautiful book that captures the emotional and physical trauma that the Holocaust had on everyone. Written by three different narrators; a jewish middle aged woman, who was never directly involved in the Holocaust, a Holocaust survivor and an officer of that regime, the reader can see the changes that the main character goes through while hearing both sides of the story. Beautifully written, equally captivating and traumatizing, this book makes you actually feel as if you were going through the same traumatic experiences as the characters in the book. Not to be read by the faint hearted or overly compassionate, this book left me dazed and mind numb for days.

If you've read any of Jodi Picoult's other novels and loved them, then this one is no different. Clear your diary, as you won't want to leave the house till you've finished! Slightly different to Picoult's other themes as this one is not based around a medical condition. Fantasy, history, romance, thrilling suspense with twists and turns in the plot. A MUST read. A book I will re-read in years to come.

I bought this book to read because Ron DeSantis has banned the book. I wanted to see why. How sad that students will not be able to read this book without easy access. I would say juniors and seniors in high school could certainly read this book. If parents have doubts, then you read it before your children. Parents say they don't want their children to read about the atrocities that took place. This history is what teaches children how to have sympathy for those oppressed for simply being different and acceptance of people who have a different family history. There are good and bad people in every walk of life. We can't let others determine who we accept and who we don't. Kindness should always be the first choice.
Ms. Picoult is an incredibly prolific writer, and really goes into depth with her character development, back stories, and creativity. I can always relate in some way to all of her subjects. Looking forward to reading more of her novels.
Having been disappointed with the last couple of books that Jodi Picoult had written, I was delighted to see this novel reminded me of why I was so impressed with her in the first place. She has covered a difficult subject matter by using believable characters, genuine history and a story line that could be believed. Though dealing with the horror of the holocaust, and being graphic enough to make me cry, this book was still a story of hope. The ending was interesting and the characters themselves have left me wondering what will happen next. I really enjoyed this book and would happily read it again.
I am a voracious reader and its rare that I find a book as compelling as The Storyteller. So good!
The book is a terrific read. I recommend reading the authors forward before beginning the story as it adds richness to the context.
If you were looking for 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm' or 'Nancy Drew,' you came to the wrong place. Although Picoult is an excellent writer, the subject matter is depressing, a family's experiences in concentration camps during Nazi regime. We know these things happened, but if you choose to read the "deets," you will find them here.
I am a Jodi Picoult fan. This was a very good story, although some of it was hard to read (the graphic description of things that happened in the concentration camps). Even at that, it was hard to put down and I enjoyed the book. It was a library copy, but was in good shape and a bargain.
