Having used past Therm-a-Rest pillows with foam stuffing, I was looking for a more compact option for bikepacking. I chose the Large option to keep my head from sliding off a smaller pillow. I believe this to be the perfect size. Inflation is quick and easy with the same valve setup as my Xtherm mattress, and you can control how hard or soft the pillow is by adding or releasing air. The plastic internal bladder isn't very thick so I would be careful to avoid punctures and have a repair kit just in case. Overall I do like this pillow and it packs up very small for traveling. Photo comparison with my older Therm-a-Rest compressible pillow and a Nalgene bottle. Actual packed weight 226g.

Well I have purchased over 6 hiking pillow so far and each one has not been good enough. My search is finally over and I now have found the pillow to use on my Thru hike on the Appalachian Trail starting 5 March 2023. This is comfortable and the fabric is soft and removeable to clean. Easy to adjust the thickness of the pillow. I have tested this pillow for the last 14 days during my snoozes inside. Yes I am OLD. And I have finally found the perfect pillow for my Thru hike.

I have been using a standard flocked inflatable pillow for years but opted to upgrade to one that was a little larger and would be more comfortable as I am a side-sleeper.This pillow is the perfect size for a mummy sleeping bag as it tucked into the hood and stays put. The size of the pillow is perfect as it won't slide around inside of your sleeping bag hood.While the pillow is approximately double the size of my old inflatable pillow, it doesn't take up too much room in my pack and the extra size makes up for the added comfort. The down liner in the pillow is somewhat thin but it does provide more comfort than a standard flocked inflatable and adds warmth.For those who want a true traditional pillow feel, I recommend throwing a shirt over top of the ... Ordered the large version and it didn’t survive coIng out of the stuff stack, getting blown up and tested, put back into the stuff sack, and brought out for a long 8 hour flight. The air bladder inside the pillow is flimsy and doesn’t hold up to the task. On the bottom seam it developed a hole immediately after blowing it up to use on my flight. Lame at best. For something this pricy, there should never be a problem with it. Now I have a worthless piece of kit, I may or may not be able to salvage with duct tape. Why am I fixing a brand new, $50 pillow, used once, with duct tape???? Man this is irritating, I definitely could have spent the money a lot of other places. Don’t buy, flimsy, won’t hold up to trail use.
Just received my pillow..intended for two camping safaris in June and July in Southern Africa. It seems comfortable enough and I know it is much better than some others I have used. I will review again after I use it. One thing I agree on is it is a tight fit in the small stuff sack. I tried it three times. My suggestions: fold along same folds the company used, and roll very tightly from the end opposite the valve to the valve end....then it was only about 10 seconds to actually stuff the bag. Like others, I will probably add a layer over the pillow (tshirt, etc) just for additional softness.
I bought an Airhead pillow back in 2020 after 25 years of backpacking experience that considered such an item an unnecessary luxury. I had always just rolled/bunched up clothes or a jacket for use as a pillow. After my first trip with the Airhead pillow in September 2020 that paradigm shifted. Permanently!I'm now in my fourth season with the Airhead and it has become a mandatory piece of my backcountry kit. Three times on the West Coast Trail, once on the North Coast Trail, and too-numerous-to-count shorter excursions on top of those.It's comfortable, compact, lightweight and, when I get home from a trip, easy to clean in the clothes washer. Highly recommend!
I bought 2 of these on a whim after reading endless reviews of other inflatable pillows, and I am super happy. Somehow this product hasn't made it onto any gear comparison websites, maybe because it's not as ultralight as some others, but this pillow is amazing. If you are looking for the lightest option, maybe look elsewhere, but if you can stomach an extra couple ounces then this pillow is the most comfortable inflatable pillow on the market and you can modulate the weight a bit. I now use this for everything from sitting in a hammock, to car camping and backpacking. I never bring my full-sized normal bed pillow anywhere anymore, even when weight is not an issue, as this pillow is just as good and packs down to about the size of a t-shirt. Side sleeping is great since this pillow is quite tall when inflated (about 4.5""). The removable/washable pillow case is also really soft and comfortable and works nicely with the thin layer of foam glued to the pillow underneath the pillow case. I weighed this pillow at 5.8 oz with the pillow case and the stuff sack; pillow (w/ foam glued on) is 3.62oz, the pillow case is 1.83oz and the stuff sack is 0.35oz. If you leave the Air Head pillow case and stuff sack at home, and then use a shirt as a pillowcase it's a great lighter-weight option. A standard neck Buff is actually a little too small to stretch over the fully-inflated Air Head but you could partly inflate the pillow or just drape the buff over the top since it sticks pretty well to the porous foam on the pillow (see pictures). It would be nice if the foam was actually attached to the inside of the pillow case or was a separate piece altogether so it could be removed for a lighter-weight option, since I currently don't bring this pillow on mountaineering trips due to the weight. I guess you could attempt to separate the foam from the plastic pillow to make the weight truly modular based on your desired comfort, but the glue is pretty strong holding the two together.
I love Thermarest products and had previously used the pillow version that is pieces of foam and rolls up (have used it for about 20 years backpacking and camping and now my kids use it). I was looking for another pillow to add to the bunch. I like how much smaller it can roll (once deflated) into the pack. As a side sleeper, it’s actually better than the foam because it’s thicker. It fits in the mummy hood as described. Excited to use it for the next four camping trips this summer!
I recently purchased a large Air Head pillow directly from Thermarest. I tried it out at home. While it was comfortable, and a good thickness for a side-sleeper, I found it had a slow leak (confirmed in the bathtub). They have no phone number listed, so I submitted a warranty claim online - the response to my form was that their turnaround time is 12 weeks. It's been over a week and no one has contacted me. I also submitted their online form to contact support - no response so far. If you are tempted to get this pillow, be warned that the quality assurance is not what it should be. I would also suggest you deal with a retailer who will support you, rather than directly with Thermarest.
