The pack is rated to hold your standard DSLR, 4-6 basic zooms plus your iPad and 13" laptop. It's sized to handle your 300mm f/2.8 so if you're a nature or sports shooter, you're covered. Think Tank has designed this bag both for functionality and security since it comes with a security cable and lock that can be tied to a reception hall column or fence leaving you to remove your gear while the rest of the pack stays safely tethered. Even the strong YKK zippered sliders accept user-supplied locks for maximum protection and peace of mind while on the job. Inside, padded movable dividers allow you to arrange the guts of the bag in whatever way you choose. Your computers are stored in their own, separate lockable, zippered compartment. For even more flexibility and security, you can store your optional Artificial Intelligence Laptop case within the computer pocket. You have multiple ways of carrying the pack from its adjustable harness system and removable waist belt to the very convenient handles situated on three sides. The harness has enhanced lumbar support and air mesh paneling that will help keep you cool while the pack is on your back. And no need to worry about getting caught in bad weather since the pack is supplied with a neat rain cover that stores inside when not needed. A sternum strap is also provided to help maintain balance while walking. The Airport Essentials also accepts Think Tank's optional Pro Speed Belt or Thin Skin Belt that will assist with stability as well as increased load capacity. Your tripod can be secured to the pack with its feet in a supplied exterior pocket and head tied with a supplied strap. For small accessories, the inside flap has laminated mesh pockets for everything from memory cards to a snack. Excellent backpack for hiking

While the airport qualities are well documented (small yet roomy, inconspicuous, well built), it's less obvious how well this backpack suits hiking. The contoured back, adjustable straps and belt make for a good, ergonomic load in the field. I hiked multiple times with it and even scrambled class 4 terrain without feeling unbalanced. Of course I still use a mountaineering backpack for overnight or more serious climbing, but for day hikes is almost perfect."Almost" is the key word that looses one star here, as the backpack lacks in organization flexibility: there is no way to adjust the dividers to make more room for clothing or non photographic items. Typically I take one body with 300/4, 12-24/4, 50/1.4, and 100/2.8 macro lenses, filters, and all these still leave ... MoreWhile the airport qualities are well documented (small yet roomy, inconspicuous, well built), it's less obvious how well this backpack suits hiking. Ideally Think Tank should provide an additional set of shorter, less than full height dividers to accommodate one large compartment and a couple of garment items laying flat over gear. One other issue has to do with where it opens, which forces people to lay it down on its back, thus exposing the carrying back to dirt, damp, etc. Obviously the zippered opening and hinge should be on the carrying side. Yes, I realize this is a technical challenge, take it as a recommendation for next version. :)

I've been struggling to find the right bag for me. I travel a lot (8-10 months out of the year). The Essentials, while not super fashionable totally gets the job done. It has a small profile which is great when boarding flights because then they don't question if it fits carry on requirements. Inside the bag is perfectly laid out. I can fit a ton in it and it's easy to access. Easily customisable. I fit my Nikon D750, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 105mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8, 180mm 2.8, 18-35mm and 24-120mm, speedlite, extra batteries, 13" MacBook Pro, 14" Dell Latitude etc. etc. AND I still have room leftover. So pleased. FINALLY. Game changer.

Great Carry-on for Regional Airlines
9 June 2014

This bag is the perfect size if your travel will take you on smaller regional flights. I never had any trouble getting it in the overhead bin, nor did the gate personnel try at any time to get me to gate-check the bag. The side and top handles were VERY handy for getting it in and out of the overhead bins and the separate laptop section made it very quick and convenient to get the computer out at security. I carried a Canon 50D, 70-200mm f2.8, several smaller lenses, a flash, a Netbook and various miscellaneous pieces of camera gear. As a carry-on, this bag really shines. However, working out of the bag is a little awkward. In order to get to any of the camera gear, the entire top must be unzipped and laid back. Not fatal, just not real efficient. Just Perfect for what I needed
30 April 2019

When I traded from a full set of Nikon DLSRs and lenses to Fuji X-Series cameras, I found my various camera bags suddenly were too big. The difference is size between DSLR and mirrorless bodies and lenses is significant. So I began searching for one bag that would serve my travel needs. Now retired from my editor duties of a boating magazine, I no longer needed to travel the globe lugging heavy bags full of big glass and heavy digital bodies. As I simplified my approach to photography, I came across David Hobby and his Strobist blog. Davids many video in Lynda.com as well as his blog really made me appreciate doing more with less. And when it came to recommending gear, Hobby hands down loves this small camera backpack for travel. Davids many video in Lynda.com as well as his blog really made me appreciate doing more with less. And when it came to recommending gear, Hobby hands down loves this small camera backpack for travel. He travels with less gear than most, although he is a professional photographer. This aligns with my direction moving forward.I have a Fuji X-Pro2 with the new 16mm/f2.8 lens (outstanding combination!), a Fuji X-T2 with a couple of great lenses and I try to keep things simple. This bag is PERFECT for my needs. It can always get aboard an airplane with this as carry-on as it fits under the seat, and is ideal for a one-bag-for-traveling situation. It has lots of pockets, room for a small Chromebook and/or iPad, chargers, notebook, etc.If you are looking for a camera bag to store every piece of your camera and related gear, it is too small for bodies and lenses and flashes and chargers and filters. And if you use full-frame DLSR gear, it is also too small. But for a mirrorless shooter with an eye towards minimalism, it is perfect for traveling. I can even carry a change of clothes and a toilet kit if I just want to carry one piece of luggage for a weekend or so.Think Tank bags are well make and well engineered. Nothing but praise for this product and company. David Hobby even shows how he puts this bag on his lap to sleep on a plane. Havent done that yet, but totally understand what he is saying.Hope this helps anyone looking for a quality but small camera bag.

Love my Think Tank Bag!
4 January 2017

I love this bag! I really trust it to protect my gear, it is very sturdy and dependable from the dividers, the outside walls to the zipper quality. I also love that it has the lock feature to secure my gear for when I need to leave it behind (for example, in the brides room while I shoot a wedding). It has plenty of room, bigger than I expected and I think I need to buy more lenses to fill it up! :) It easily fits a laptop and/or ipad in the outside pocket and the handle grips are useful for loading into overhead bins. The only downside to this bag is that it is a bit boxy, so not super fashionable. I don't intend to wear it for fashion, just for transporting my gear safely from point A to point B, so it doesn't bother me too much. If you need a bag that can protect ... MoreI love this bag! Perfect Airport Bag

This is a well made bag that stows perfectly under all airline seats. I fly regional jets and the overhead compartments are not always available or big enough. I could not risk a gait checked bag. I fly United Airlines and they have one of the smallest personal bag size limits. This is exactly the specs for their requirements. I fit 2 Fuji H2s bodies, 150-600 lens, 24-70 lens, 6 batteries, memory card reader, think tank memory card holder, 14" laptop and charger, my 3 oz liquid bag, wallet, small bag of lozenges, tissues, and other toiletries. Perfect travel companion

Why I love this backpack: 1. When I fly, I use this as my Personal Item (tucked under the seat) along with the Pelican Air 1535 as the Carry-on in the overhead compartment. That way, I can use either bag to hold photography equipment depending on need. On a recent trip, I used the Think Tank Essentials for my clothes, iPad, magazines, etc. It's the maximum Personal Item size, so no issues at the airport. 2. Durability - this bag has a sturdy form-factor, protecting your equipment snuggly. 3. Convenience - compartments and slots in just the right spots. 4. When I do use it for it's intended use - holding photography equipment - it works great for me. I'm an corporate event photographer and I hold the following: Canon 5D Mark II and Mark IV bodies, 24-70 and 70-200 ... MoreWhy I love this backpack: 1. 2. If I'm shooting a portrait session on location, I'll add the Pelican for the lighting and other accessories. 5. Use the provided cable to lock it up on location - LOVE this feature. Overall, just a really good pack for when you need to be ultra-portable.

Returned this one

I was looking for an everything bad to store all my equipment. I shoot Fuji mirrorless so it seemed from the dimensions this bag would work. However I just couldn't get it to fit all my equipment. I also didn't like that you couldn't unzip the laptop compartment all the way to the bottom. It also had this pocket with a lock, which doesn't seem very useful to me. I don't travel by air very much so I was looking more for something that would let me organize my equipment at home or on car journeys (we travel with a camper) so this one wasn't big enough. The size that I needed was very expensive. I ended up purchasing the LowePro runner bag that was cheaper and just a little bigger. This one was more customizable then the think tank. Overall I just felt the Lowepro was ... MoreI was looking for an everything bad to store all my equipment. I shoot Fuji mirrorless so it seemed from the dimensions this bag would work. Very Durable. Love It!

This is by far the best photography backpack I've owned out of the 5 I've ever had. I don't actually travel state-to-state flying with this backpack; however, I do use it when I have to travel to studios, local events, and etc. There's PLENTY of space for gear and the durability and level of protection it offers is unmatched. I must admit, sometimes I even throw the bag down roughly and don't pay it any mind, because I know my gear is protected. I like that it has a pocket for water bottles. It seems like a minor thing but makes my life much easier. I'm a pretty petite woman, so its weight is very ideal for the amount of gear I can pack into it.
