This is a really fantastic backpack for traveling. I got this with the intention of using it for air travel, and this definitely fit the bill. It is so comfortable to wear while walking around, and is so much more convenient that using a rolling suitcase or a bag with a shoulder strap. It fits easily in an overhead bin, even while packed full. It has many compartments, including one for a laptop or other screen electronics. It also has a plastic waterproof compartment that I use for liquid items. It has enough room to carry a change of clothing along with many additional items, and could easily function as a weekend bag, or for someone who may not wish to check a bag at the airport. I purchased the black/charcoal version. This is a great carry on pack that is versatile and not to much to manage once you reach your destination. The bag has room and depending on how bulky your items are can carry quite a bit but be cautious not to overpack as it will not fit without extreme force in smaller planes overhead. The ONLY thing I would cautious buyers is the look of the bag after use and when you receive it. The texture THULE mentions of having a weathered look if factual and when you use it will get more "weathered". The look is not bad just looks like you have used the bag for multiple trips after your first one. If you expect the bag to have a "fresh" look all the time this is not the bag for you. Durability is excellent, definitely recommend it.
It has all the necessary pockets and is quite spacious inside. The waxed finish is nice - looks more like a faded black that dirty black. I just wish the laptop compartment had some sort of a lock/security option as it's quite easy for it to slip out or for someone else to slide your laptop out if you're not careful, and I wish it came with a hip belt as it gets pricey to buy it separately.The two things that annoy me are: the plastic 'buckles' on shoulder straps are quite stiff so it's difficult to regulate them and the actual length of the backpack is 56.5cm, not 52cm as advertised, which makes quite a bit of difference if you're short.
I have owned this bag for about a year and have used it on about a dozen trips, from cruises, country hopping around Europe, and road trips to cities and national parks. So suffice it to say I have put this bag through a lot of extensive real world use. The bag gets the job done and I can easily sustain myself for a week or a few days more out of it. If you don't pack shoes in it and/or own a slimmer laptop, you could easily fit a lot more stuff.Pros: Sits well on my shoulders even though I load it very heavy, the water bottle pocket does not become useless when the bag is stuffed (I can still easily fit my 32oz Nalgene), very durable and rain resistant construction, dedicated pocket that will fit a passport and more.Cons: The interior compression straps don't use the typical 3 pronged clip design (its a hassle to get them unclipped), this are no exterior straps or bungee web to secure extra items like jackets or a baseball cap, the should straps cant be tucked away or detached so no turning it into duffle bag, finally, it does not come with a hip belt, you have to pay extra for one.All those cons make it not worth the price to me, especially the fact that there are no exterior compression straps that I can hook extra items to or tie a jacket to the outside with. This bag is good, but gets beat out by the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 40L since the Osprey eliminates all those cons while keeping the pros.
This could be the perfect carry on back pack to fit all your electronics, medium trip clothing and accessories and then some. But I found at least two design issues that inhibits it’s full potential. I have used this as a carry on all g with a roll aboard carry on for a 8 day trip in the UK/Scotland. First, When the internal tie downs in the main compartment are cinched fully the zipper for the electronics compartment does not close smoothly. Second, when you stow the pack on your roll aboard handle you have to flip the pack on its side. Which means you can’t keep your water bottle in its pocket when carrying it this way as the bottle slot is on the side. Defeats the purpose!! Thule design team - maybe you will address in the next iteration. I bought this backpack, the Thule’s Aion 40L a few weeks ago and test drove it. Here’s what I found. This backpack meets both the carry-on requirements of both domestic and international overhead bin measurements . It fits nicely on the overhead compartments of Aer Lingus and Delta Airlines on my recent trip to Scotland. It packs nicely with ample room for my clothes for 9 days. You can hold a lot of stuff in this backpack and it’s very comfortable to carry as a backpack. I got the Nutria color and love the waxy look!
Just purchased a Thule Aion and used it for my recent short trip. As I live in Hawai’i and enjoy traveling to the mainland and foreign countries such as Japan, Italy, etc. I wanted a big enough backpack that can accommodate jackets, etc. for colder weather so I can wear them as soon as I arrive at my destinations. This backpack has multiple slots and pockets for my iPad, iPhone, chargers, keys, passport, pen, etc. I can easily get them out. I have four other backpacks, but this one is so far the best one for my short and long trips. Would highly recommend it for avid travelers.

I wanted a bag that had a sizable, independent laptop pocket (not just sleeve) where I can stash my laptop case, and have quick access when going through TSA. I wanted an easy to access and well organized compartment for smaller items, an independent main compartment for clothes and finally, I wanted this in a form factor that I could potentially squeeze under the seat in front of me as a personal item. This Aion 40L bag comes closest to meeting those requirements.
