I'll agree that getting it together is a bit time consuming, but for us it works perfectly as advertised. We own several bikes and do many road camping/riding trips with 4 adult road,mountain.and/or gravel bikes loaded. To do so without scratching a frame requires some creativity with various sizes of velcro straps to secure the front wheel to the frame. Frame stabilizers are provided with the rack and work well. The part that secures the rack to the hitch receiver came out undamaged, speaking to the strength of the rack to carry a load. I'm replacing it because the impact bent it up against my tailgate and cannot be repaired. For our travelling system, the Thule Apex XT Swing is indispensable. It's unfortunate that some rate this rack very low. It's a solid 5 star for us!!!

I bought this rack in April 2020. There were four of us in lockdown, we all had bikes, and we needed a way to transport them if we wanted a change of scenery. The rack has been a mainstay ever since. Works just like advertised. The swing function is great. Installation is straightforward. Love the locking cable for added security when out and about with the bike on the rack. I read through many of the 1 star reviews as I am recommending this to a neighbor who asked me for the model. The only conclusions I can come up with for the poor reviews are (in order of decreasing likelihood): 1. User error 2. Newer ones are not made as well 3. Make sure you buy the correct sized product for your hitch. You do have to turn a couple of handle bars 90 degrees when loading up 4 adult mountain bikes. Have never had a problem with the straps. They are easy to use and keep the bike secure. Bottom line: my expectations were exceeded and I have over two years of regular usage with the utmost satisfaction.

Disappointed with Cheap Plastic Components
30 August 2020

I have and do own a number of Thule products and generally opt for higher quality purchases to get the best performance. So I went with Thule again for our drive across Canada in the time of Covid. When I bought the rack and started fitting it up to the car (2 days before departure) the unit fit up well and installed easily. Unfortunately the T-handle locking pin broke on the second try. The circlip fell off the pin inside the plastic housing that guides the pin. The circlip and spring were stuck inside the plastic enclosure. I was able to remove the plastic enclosure and retrieve the parts. I called the dealer and the next day I had tp wait 3 hours for the 5 minute repair. I was able to remove the plastic enclosure and retrieve the parts. I called the dealer and the next day I had tp wait 3 hours for the 5 minute repair. I acknowledge they were busy due to Covid demand but I just bought it a few days earlier so I would have expected way better urgency for me. After repairing the T-bolt pin assembly I took off on our trip and the T-bolt pin broke again so I abandoned it altogether. The swing function works fine without this pin. It appears that the pin is used for two functions and with the bikes on the rack there really is no need for these two locking positions. I would scrap the assembly altogether. Given the perceived quality and cost of Thule products, I was was surprised to see the use of a plastic enclosure to retain and guide the metal T-handle pin. Plastic always breaks when it used in an apllication like this. Even after the pin was repaired with anew circlip the plastic enclosure was quickly wearing around the pin and I suspect it would have eventually rendered the whole assembly useless within a few months of use. Another issue is the swing function - the outermost hinge and the cantilevered arms are so stressed by the bike weight that the arm drops down and when you swing it back in you have to physically lift the arm (and bikes) up to get the outer arm up and over the inner arm so that you can engage the locking screw into the outer arm. For me it took a good bit of strength to make this work. My wife and kids would struggle to be able to do this at a grocery store. The concept of the outward swing is great but the mechanical design is not accounting for the weight, the moments created by the swing arms and the bike weights. The design should account for the sag of the arms and hinge joints to compensate for this reality.

Fundamentally does not work
1 April 2023

I think the whole concept here is just flawed. The swinging action is supposed to allow you to access your hatch while it is mounted (and even loaded with bikes!l but in practice, it is a pain to do when it is empty and nearly impossible to do when loaded. Given how weights and cantilevers work, I don't think this is really a solvable problem. Also, even when empty this thing has a small metal tongue that sticks down and scraped on every driveway I went across, even unloaded. Felt like I was driving a lowrider and was so bad when loaded with bikes that I would have to aim for wide driveways that allowed me to take them at angles.

Good idea, terrible design
8 August 2022

We purchased this bike rack last winter with the intent of using it this summer on the family trip. We assembled and tested everything when we received the rack - it seemed to work. However, when the bikes were loaded, it was impossible to lock the rack back into place after we had swung it open to access the hatchback of our car. The locking screw has a lot of wiggle to it and does not align properly with the receiving end. It will not engage and lock into place. We made several attempts, but ultimately had to unload the bicycles and remove the rack to get it to function properly. We did not bring the bikes on our trip. We are very disappointed with this bike rack and are looking for a replacement. I would not recommend this product.

Wanted to love this product. The install was easy enough and it works perfectly without any bikes on it. However, trying to fit 4 bikes of different sizes and frame design was like trying to put a jigsaw puzzle of all one color pieces together even using the adapter bars. Which also means not all bikes were able to use the anti swing strap. Once the bikes are on (2 adult and 2 kid bikes) the weight is to much for it function properly. The arm does not remain level so the weight has to be lifted in order to release the arm lock and then again to get the locking pin in place. I got the product shortly after I ordered from Thule. Assembly is not very difficult, although there is a step missing as they don't tell you to use the flat key the first time that you need to insert the locks. Functionality is a mixed bag for two reasons: 1. the straps that keep the bikes on the rack are SUPER HARD to operate. You kind of need to choose between leaving them half loose at the risk of the bike falling on the highway or tightening the straps and being stuck as you will not be able to undo them later. I am considering throwing the straps in the garbage and replacing them with bungee cords. 2. The big feature of this "swing away" feature is that you can open the full trunk, unobstructed. This is true, except that when you are done and need to connect the arm back on the hitch, the sheer weight of the bicycles is pushing the arm down and not allowing the main bolt to go back in. You need to be fairly strong and push up the arm + bikes and wiggle with the bolt until you are lucky to find the threaded hole. It takes a ew tries and is a bit exhausting. So paying the extra money to have the swing away feature does not pay off. I would no buy this product again. The positive is that once you are done the bikes stay in place and the thing does not seem to move much.

Oddly poor design
6 September 2022

This rack checked the boxes I was looking for: hitch rack that could move out of the way of the trunk on my Outback, with 4 bike capacity for less than a mortgage payment. However, there is one big design flaw that is a total deal breaker... the main bolt cannot be tightened enough to fully secure the rack. I don't think it's a safety issue because there is an additional locking pin. But every time you hit a bump, speed up, or slow down, there is a very loud "CLUNK" sound that reverberates through the whole car because the whole rack is shifting back and forth on the loose bolt. A shorter bolt, a spacer, there are a number of ways this could be fixed, but why is it like this in the first place? It's honestly confusing. Not specific to this rack, but hanging style in general.... you're probably not going to get 4 bikes on this thing. I spent a lot of time trying every combination of my 2 adult road bikes and 2 kids bikes, and there is just no way.

Strap design is terrible - don't buy
5 July 2022

I bought the Thule XT 4, spending more than other options because Thule has a reputation for great products. Like others I have been very disappointed with the straps. Just tonight, my strap is stuck and unable to be removed. We had it professionally installed so the straps are properly installed with the "click", button the right way etc. The strap was not over tightened either. But it just won't come out. I likely will have to cut the strap to remove the bike. TERRIBLE! DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BIKE RACK!
