B&H did well

Since I haven't spent a lot of time trying the filter out, just received it, I can't really say a lot about the quality of it. It seems to work fine though, does what it should and doesn't seem to affect the IQ negatively. My inky experience is with B&H, which does what they do best at all time. Fast order processing, shipping done fast, and prices which makes it worth purchasing from them, even internationally, so that is what my rating is for. Great job B&H.

Essential for video and time lapse

I use this for DSLR video and time lapse photography. It allows for longer shutter speeds, and helps keep aperture in ideal range for sharpness, motion blur, or shallow depth of field. Also, the filter worked well without any magenta haze. For video it really balances out the contrast in harsh daylight shooting, making it easier to post process. As for clarity, it has no noticeable decline of sharpness or clarity. Also the ND helps protect the lens like a UV but with a function, and the non-coated glass is real easy to clean in the field.Cons: it does add a very very small amount of greenish tint which is easy to fix in post processing and video editing. It does the job well, and is simple to use. And the negatives are easy to fix. I chose this over a variable because 3 stops is ideal for what I do. And, I wanted a filter that is easy and fast to calculate exposure adjustments in manual mode. Also, I wanted higher quality images without the associated X problem when using Variable NDs at the extreme ends.

I purchased six of these for use in long term time-lapse camera set-ups. Purchased US made as I expected high quality. Unfortunately these ND filters let me down. In the Australian sun they all began to fade. Firstly the outside blackened metal rings turned bronze, then extra light seemed to be reflected into the glass closest to the actual filter and this area started fading and turning green. The result was a darker area toward the center of the filters turning a greenish colour at the edges. The time-lapse pictures captured also started to gradually get a green colour caste. Not good!! Some cheaper filters from Japan had no such issues, in fact have had a couple in the field for over three years. So for short term use these maybe just fine. I would avoid anyway as they exhibit fading over time which is not helpful for consistent results.

Great Product!

I bought this ND filter to help with photographing waterfalls. Although I haven't found it as useful on very overcast days for my needs, it has allowed me to have more success in photographing waterfalls in brighter sunlight. If not for this filter I would not have gotten one of my better recent shots where the sunlight was shining through the trees onto a small waterfall. It also helps with getting the swirl pool around waterfalls. It can also be stacked with a CPL filter, which comes in handy. I haven't found any negatives so far and I've used it several times. I should have bought it a long time ago and I wouldn't have to go back and redo several falls.

This is my first ND filter and I use it mostly for videography rather than photography so this review may or may not matter those who only use it for photography. Its great for sunny outdoors when you want to get that high aperture settings. For the most part, it handles nicely with an aperture setting of 3 or above but anywhere below that and the shots can be overexposed. For example, I also have an identical 52mm filter for the Canon 50mm f1.8 and some of the highlights were starting to become overexposed as the aperature dropped below 3 and the picture was pretty much completely white at the 1.8 setting even in the shade of a sunny afternoon. Another thing I didn't like too much was the case it came in. Another thing I didn't like too much was the case it came in. I don't really have a good place to store my ND filters so I just use the plastic box it comes in. It has some pretty good freeplay in there which worries me about the filter being shaken up too much. The box for the 52mm was chipped off and some of the debree went inside. Luckily it didn't scratch anything but it still kinda ticked me off. Aside from that, its a good ND filter. It does what it does and is pretty useful in a lot of situations. If you want to go for a higher aperture setting, go for a darker filter.

Not Great!
4 February 2018

I own a CANON XC15 Camera which has a built-in 0.9 (3 stop) ND Filter. But sometimes 3 stops isn't enough, so I purchased this Tiffen 58mm Neutral Density 0.9 Filter to use in combination with the built-in Filter. I opened the plastic case that contained the filter and found dirt & grime all over the lens. Fortunately, it wasn't scratched even after a little cleaning. So my immediate impression was not great. More importantly, image quality suffers using this ND Filter. The ND Filter that is built-in the camera works much better. But lets be serious... it cost less then $20.00 so I'm not too surprised.

[Rewarded Review] A good filter

This filter slows my shutter speeds down to help blur water falls to give them a softer look. It makes it much easier than manually adjusting my shutter speed.

[Rewarded Review] Does the ticket for a reasonable price!
11 May 2023

I was actually able to get useable footage on an outdoors day in bright sunlight! It was painful changing shutter speed and aperture to the extremes just to get useable video footage. I would recommend getting a stronger one or multiple if shooting at really wide apertures, I was able to use this at f-8 (without it I would have to shoot at like f-16, which makes lens imperfections such as dust visible). So if you want a really dramatic bokeh, get more of these, but overall the 3 stop is very versatile.

5 July 2024

I purchased this filter as my very first ND filter, so I could try my hand at long exposures. I love how it makes waterfalls/water look! I will have to get higher stop filters though, because it does struggle a bit with high-noon sun exposures. Very impressed overall though, and will probably stick with Tiffen filters in the future!

[Rewarded Review] Tiffen Quality
3 September 2021

I've been using Tiffen filters since I started shooting movies in my youth, and they still deliver excellent quality images now for digital video and stills as they did 60 years ago! Using this ND filter outdoors with great success (coupled with a Tiffen circular polarizer, both in a Moment 37mm filter mount) on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Recommended.
