I am impressed at the features that are packed into this range extender; it is pretty much has the functionality of a router just without a few fewer ethernet ports. I have encountered so many sub-par range extenders that it is nice to finally find a good one. Let's start with the Pros. The packaged instructions are detailed, easy to follow, and include a couple different ways to set up the extender. And when you do something wrong trying to get to the configuration, there are even a couple of webpages and instructions that will come up to help steer you back in the correct direction. Unlike many extenders, the external antennas and additional features mean that the body of this extender does not feel horribly hollow. The inclusion of a power button is nice, but the real icing on the cake is the LED on / off button. Once you have everything in place and working, you can press the LED button to turn off all the interface lights meaning you no longer have to put up with a light telling you something you already know. And if something goes wrong, the press of a button turns all the indicators right back on. Now for the Cons. To start with, this is not a small unit; small for the amount of features it has, but not small. However, it's size is well executed. It can be plugged into the top slot on an outlet and there is still enough room to plug something in below it. The weigh is also balanced well so that it does not try and pull itself out of the outlet. While the overall quality of the device is good, the antennas just feel a little cheap comparatively. My final complaint is that the signal quality indicator could be slightly better. While the simple red is bad and blue is good is easy to understand and use, I would have preferred something to indicate the percentage quality of the signal. Overall, this is one of the best Wi-Fi extenders I have come across. If you are looking for something to extend both of your Wi-Fi bands at decently fast speeds, this may be the right option for you.

I've reviewed many range extenders and this is the first one I would actually recommend. While up and downstream transfer speeds suffer due to the introduction of another piece of hardware that has to travel the same wireless airspace, it is still an improvement from nothing at all and those cheaper earlier generation attempts at range extenders. In my home configuration, there are 3 floors and multiple walls to break down the signal. In extreme locations of the home, maintaining a strong signal is important for security cameras but difficult to achieve. In testing this device, I was able to subjectively achieve a strong signal (from 2 to 4 wifi bars) however, as expected, there was only a slight increase in speed (from ~96 to ~176 Mbps, far shy of the theoretical ... Still, this is a marked improvement over previous extenders I've tried. I'm glad to finally be able to recommend a consumer grade range extender.

Full disclosure: This is the sixth WiFi extender I have tested from Newegg, with brands including Linksys, D-Link, Belkin, TP-LINK, and others. This TP-LINK RE355 is hands down the best one I’ve tested yet. This dual band wifi range extender from TP-LINK really shows how the company has matured their products. In the box is the extender, a short Ethernet cable, a quick start guide, legal stuff regarding GNU software usage, and a card pointing the user to an instructional youtube video. This video was very good in describing the setup of the device. The physical device is a tad larger than other extenders but has a very slick, appealing look. Being white, it blends into most people’s decor nicely. At first it seemed like it was going to block the power plug under it, ... Being white, it blends into most people’s decor nicely. At first it seemed like it was going to block the power plug under it, but it just barely allows a normal sized plug under it. Good thinking, TP-LINK. The setup was dead simple, and I chose the route of using the Android app. This is a great feature, as often times it seems like a pain to go unplug your computer or haul out a laptop if you don’t typically use one. The app is very nicely done and lets you manage every aspect of the extender. Some feature, such as the ability to set a “night mode” which turns the LEDs off, is huge for me, as I hate random blinky lights all over my house (at least not where I don’t want them). They even made sure the Ethernet port’s LEDs also shut off in that mode. The TP-LINK RE355 has great features and also shines in wifi performance. When plugged in roughly 50 feet from my main wifi router I was able to achieve 555 Mbps and 302 Mbps on a single large file and large folder of files respectively. This device would be perfect to plug in behind an entertainment center with a switch to give a high speed Ethernet connection to all your TVs, streaming boxes, bluray players, and gaming systems. The RE355 also shined in range. I was able to get my full internet connection bandwidth with the device plugged in over 60 feet from my wifi router and then over 75 feet and through multiple walls from the extender! Very very nice range. The external signal indicator makes it a snap to find just the right spot to plug it in as well. Overall this is definitely the best extender I’ve seen yet, and at $60 is a pretty great deal considering the range and performance. A solid five eggs!

The device has one Wired Ethernet connection. The documentation indicates the Wired Ethernet plug is for Clients only. That is, you can not run the device as a Wireless Access Point for Clients, using the Wired Ethernet port to attach to your Router. I did not try a "WAP" configuration experiment to disprove the documentation. One experiment I did run on the Wired Ethernet Port, was to attach it to a Ethernet Switch (with multiple Clients attached to the Switch). To my delight, this worked without issue, that is, I could have multiple Clients attached to the device via a Switch, with those Clients sharing the Wireless attachment to my Router through the device. If you are looking for a dual band WiFi Range Extender, I recommend this device.
TheTP-Link RE355 serves its purpose well. It indicates the connection status via the indicator ring light and has separate LEDs to confirm 2.4 and 5Ghz connectivity. The extender has indicator LEDs that aren’t very bright, and while this does not affect the actual operation of the extender, it is a huge plus in my book. While you can setup the extender with a separate SSID, why would you if you’re extending your existing wireless network? Aside, I found it easiest to simply reset the router to default and set it up again when configuring for separate SSIDs. I also found it painful to use it with a separate SSID as it is a truly seamless experience when the SSID is cloned. The TP-link tether app is available for device based setup/configuration. I live in the lower-half of a two-family home. Router is in the basement by necessity, so it used to be that we could only get the 2.4Ghz signal throughout the home. The 5Ghz could only be picked up in certain places that were nearby the router. This extender seems to solve that problem. We get 5Ghz throughout the home, and 2.4Ghz out onto the porch and into the yard. The setup was super easy. I'm used to having to run back and forth between router and extender pushing WPS button - and then usually having some kind of "network name - extender" SSID coming from the extender. But this was: plug it in, connect to it like you would a router, follow the on-screen prompts, and get a seamless wireless network. Super easy. All you need to know if your WiFi network names and passwords. That is it. One thing you should be aware of is just how massive this extender is. Don't expect to be using that socket for anything other than this extender. It doesn't completely block the plug below it, but it does come close enough that getting other plugs in and out would be difficult/impossible (depending on the plug). Even then, with the antennas retracted, its about 6" long. I suggest you put it in a socket that you don't really use. We put it in our kitchen, in a socket that we never used (its in an odd place). Is it worth $90? Maybe. Depends on your situation, and budget. If you have a little more money to spend and like solid WiFi connections - but your budget stops short of enterprise-class gear - this is probably what you are looking for. We flat out couldn't use our 5Ghz network before this. It just couldn't be picked up by any devices in most of the house, because even the $300 routers have trouble pumping 5Ghz signal up two flights of stairs from a basement. Now we have 5Ghz everywhere, and 2.4Ghz outside. But if you have only a few dead or weak spots in your coverage, you can probably get by with a cheaper extender.
Okay, so in the end I have to fully recommend this extender. It's a snap to set-up, performs excellently at all ranges on both bands, and is priced reasonably. If you can look past the fact that it doesn't offer a pass-through outlet, you are going to get one of the best extenders currently on the market at this price range. TP-Link has been doing better and better with all their networking gear. I've tested many of their products over the last year and the quality level just keeps getting better, both in terms of hardware and software.

Land line telephones companies are losing customers with shared Internet voip connectivity, i.e., (highly recommended) Obihai/Google (FREE) voice. There’s no getting around, strong reliable Internet connectivity is essential; the RE355 will go a long way to help accomplish that task; furthermore, it’s remarkably novice friendly. This & similar (networking enhancement devices) in today’s connected society ought to be a prevalent as cordless phones, they aren’t. To illustrate the point, I showed the RE355 to a presumed technically savvy teenager; holding a smartphone. He gasped, saying that’ll boost a Wi-Fi signal! Wi-Fi in most households is as important as hot water. It’d difficult to understand how little folks know about managing their Internet utility. Wireless range extenders provide an infrastructure (on the verge of science fiction) to remotely control cameras, which can pan/tilt; talk/listen; by a remote device (smartphone or tablet). Responsiveness to manipulative screen gestures controlled pan/tilt, log-in are dependent upon a strong wireless substructure. The newest generation of remote pan/tilt, talk/listen ip cameras require advanced (well-matched) operating systems, e.g., android Lollypop, Marshmallow. The heart of my Wi-Fi is a TP-LINK Archer C8 AC1750 Dual Band Wireless AC Gigabit Router; it has performed admirably (two years). Judging from this experience, I‘d venture to guess this (TP-LINK RE355 AC1200 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Range Extender) will perform, likewise; only the test of time will tell – nevertheless – I’m optimistic it will. Checked TP-LINK’s alleged, “Industry-Leading, 24/7 unlimited technical support by phone.” Called, I was next in the queue, waited no longer than a minute, spoke to a technician in California; discussion was outstanding. I received a follow-up email the following day. Customer support rating: A+
This Extender works good if I place it in the right location. Our house has a T shape on one end of the house, which is where we have a very weak spot very getting a signal, at the very end of that corner. My previous Netgear R7000 router had basically no signal at that farthest corner of the house. I recently bought an Asus AC88U from Newegg and it does get a signal at that location, although its weak on 5ghz. After trying different outlets I found the best spot was placing this Extender near that T shaped end of the house, or even in that same room, where this Extender still had a very good connection to my router. When connected to my regular router on 5ghz at that location, I had a signal strength of -80dBm, and upload speed of 14Mbit/s and Download speed of 36Mbit/s. However when I connected to the Extender on 5ghz (instead of the router), I had a much stronger signal strength of -63dBm with an upload speed of 109Mbit/s and download speed of 70Mbit/s. Some outlets/locations I tried in this house made things worse. During setup this Extender uses the same channels for both bands that your router does. It lets you choose whether you want use the same SSID names or use different names. I prefer to use different names making it easier to determine which is the router signal vs the extenders signal. I have been happy with most of the TP-Link products I own. All of them are good looking and seem to work well.
Overall, it is easy to setup and convert the PS4 2.4 Ghz b/g/n to wireless 5 Ghz ac using the gigabit Ethernet port on the side of the extender. I did expect the same speeds as my other devices but this not quite as fast as my other wireless AC devices (iPhone 6, Mac mini, Apple TV). I'm Only able to get a max of 148Mbps when other AC devices are achieving 170mbps via wirelessly connecting to the router from the upstairs in the same room. It's a solid device that perform wells and the gigabit Ethernet port is a huge plus allowing a ps4/computer to wirelessly connect to an AC network. The price is about right at $59.99. You will need to have a clear path to the router (no closed doors between extender and router) I observed 50% decrease when performing speed tests ... I would suggest putting this in an open hall or living room.
