Affordable and Powerful for Cross-platform

To get right to it, this is a great controller and a truly remarkable value at this price point. I’ve used Turtle Beach audio devices for decades and I’ve never been disappointed. I’m mostly a PC gamer but I have an Xbox One S as well and I love having a single controller that works easily and with almost exactly the same functionality on both platforms. The only thing that doesn’t work on both platforms is the “chat mix” which controls chat volume separately from game volume. Not a big deal to me personally but worth noting if chat is a big part of your gaming. Highlights: - Cross-platform compatibility. - The integrated audio controls were the standout feature to me. Having the volume controls, EQ settings, and mic-mute all handy was fantastic. - The 4 EQ presets were basic but adequate (Signature, Bass boost, Treble-boost, Bass+Treble boost), especially for quick on-the-fly adjustments. I found myself continually using the “Signature” EQ preset, it was easily the most balanced sound profile to my ears. - Superhuman audio -- So far as I can tell this is more of a 5th EQ setting that highlights frequencies in the typical footstep/reloading/creaking/door range to draw your attention to them over other ambient sounds, its effectiveness will vary game to game and I personally didn’t think it helped much. But it doesn’t hurt to have the option. - The programmable buttons were useful to map to specific controller actions. - On a PC, the Recon doesn’t show as an audio device until you plug in a headset. Plug in a headset though and it’ll show up as “Headphones (Xbox Controller)” in a few seconds, and will become a separate audio-out selectable device. Not surprisingly, all of the Recon audio controls (EQ, Volume, Mic-mute) work even on PC. As noted above, only “chat mix” doesn’t work in Windows 10, and that’s documented in the guide so it’s to be expected. The one thing: I loved almost everything about this controller except one thing, and this one thing is going to be pretty subjective so I consider it more an observation than a criticism. Although the controller is very similar physically to an original Xbox controller, there’s just enough of a difference that I found my hands starting to cramp during gaming sessions. I’ve compared it side-by-side with an original Xbox controller and the main difference to me seems to be that the original Xbox controller palm holds are slightly more meaty and simply fit into my palms better. It may well be something I’ll just get used to, and I hope that’s the case, because this is a powerful and affordable controller that packs a lot of additional convenient capabilities into the standard form factor and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone, especially cross-platform gamers.

Excellent wired controller for PC gamers

The Turtle Beach Recon wired controller works great for PC gaming. It’s about the same size as the Xbox series X and 360 controllers, with a similar shape and ergonomics, but a few features that help it stand out. It comes with a braided 10’ USB-C cable, and because it’s wired there’s no lag or battery life to worry about throwing your game off. It’s also completely plug and play for Windows 10 (I’m fully updated), with no drivers or anything else to install. I just plugged it in and everything was working within seconds, no firmware update or anything needed. I just plugged it in and everything was working within seconds, no firmware update or anything needed. In some ways, I like it better than the series X controller, because the Recon has 2 mappable rear buttons, the D pad feels precise without being too clicky (if that makes sense), I can save up to 4 different setup profiles, and there’s audio and chat control buttons right in front of me. In terms of game response and comfort, all the buttons and triggers feel solid and don’t miss a beat. Grip seems to be a big design priority. The texture around the joysticks catch my thumbs well and give a great sense of where they’re pointing. Playing high paced games like Doom Eternal and Forza 7, my thumbs never slipped and they were a real confidence builder keeping my car steady around some of the long, fast bends in Forza. The shoulder, trigger, and rear buttons are also nicely textured, and while I don’t suffer from sweaty hands, the “cooling grips” on the handles felt great in my hands without being too padded or sticky. Coming from mainly using a DS4 controller, I experienced “impulse triggers” for the first time and totally love them. Playing Forza 7, the trigger vibrations when braking were a lovely, immersive feature, and I think even helped improve game play, because it gave a sense of feedback about my brakes and when my traction was about to slip. What helps the Recon controller stand out are the 2 mappable rear buttons, 4 profile modes, 4 audio EQ presets, a “Superhuman Hearing” mode, and a Pro-Aim Focus mode. Programming everything is done right on the controller, with no extra apps to download and configure, so you can quickly change things up on the fly. The EQ modes were ok, but I liked the Superhuman Hearing mode best and stuck to that. It’s supposed to help you hear footsteps and reloads, but it also sounded the cleanest to me. The Pro-Aim Focus sounds neat, but I honestly haven’t tried it yet. From the sound of it, it has a similar effect to a high DPI mouse when playing shooters. It decreases the sensitivity of the joystick so you aim with more precision and ease while being zoomed in. This is mapped to one of the rear buttons when the mode is active, making it practical to use and deadly in tournament play if you like sniping. If there’s anything I’m disappointed with, I was hoping the 2 mappable rear buttons could handle macro functions, but that’s not the case. Not a killer for me, but something to keep in mind. If you’re looking for a solid PC game controller, or need one for your Xbox, the Turtle Beach Recon controller is an excellent one to check out. It’s comfortable, responsive, accurate, and offers a few custom options right at your fingertips. PROS - Joystick textured grip work well - Handle cushioning grips - About same size as Xbox series X and 360 controller - True plug and play with Windows 10 - Headphone audio and mic control buttons right on controller - Superhuman Hearing mode works great - Pro-Aim Focus mode is kind of like using a high dpi mouse to aim - Responsive buttons and triggers - Two programmable back buttons - Relatively light - Good fit and finish - 3.5mm headphone jack CONS - Wired - Cannot program macro functions - No fancy gaming lights

The soft, grippy rubber around the palm rest have tiny microgrooves that improve air circulation to cool down hot hands. The button and trigger placement for the main buttons is the same, though the sticks have texturized edges to keep thumbs from slipping off. There are additional paddle buttons in the back that are programmable. The rumble is nice and strong, without being too aggressive. This is a wired controller, but the wire itself is detachable, which is a great idea if you're the type to store your controllers on the wall. It's also convenient since the cord is so long that doing the ol' wrap the cord around the controller bit would be unsightly. The sound quality when plugging in my headphones into the Turtle Beach controller is so much better than plugging into my stock controller, and not just due to wired vs bluetooth, as there is some additional processing going on. Different audio profiles are selectable, boosting the directionality of the sound for FPS's for that extra spatial awareness Buttons to control the overall volume and a separate set to control the chat volume are easily accessible, even if I do accidentally lower the volume every time I try to pause the game. Plugging the controller into my PC, Steam recognizes it as an XBOX Controller, which means pretty much every game from all the other stores do too. Maybe we'll get Steam Input API support in the future. The PC also recognizes the controller as an audio output device, so the same audio functionality applies here too. All in all, the Turtle Beach Recon controller is a worthy addition to my collection. The wired nature means I don't have to keep pairing the controller back and forth between my XBOX and my PC, and also saves money on batteries (or making sure there's always a freshly charged set). The feel of the original controller is maintained, with a few upgrades for comfort. I just have to learn to stop hitting the volume down button instead of what is now called the "view" button (it'll always be "select" to me). It's not even that the button is in a different place, my thumb would always just press whatever button is closest off the stick.

Good at first, but started getting issues.
13 July 2022

When I initially got this controller it was perfect. Sticks were tight. Back buttons feel great; not too stiff and not too sensitive. It has a bit of a cheap feeling overall, but that's more with how light and thin the controller feels more than anything. But after about a month, I started getting issues with stick drift. When using the left stick it would subtly tilt my camera in games, which made it harder to use for shooters and action games with an emphasis on camera control. The left stick would also just sometimes move my character left without me touching the stick at all. The issues aren't too consistent so I don't feel like it's completely unusable, but disappointing considering how great it felt to use when it was brand new. I still use this controller ... MoreWhen I initially got this controller it was perfect. Sticks were tight. Back buttons feel great; not too stiff and not too sensitive. Great all in one Gaming controller

Turtle Beach's Recon controller really is a all in one gaming controller that should fit just about everyone's needs perfectly. What makes the controller so nice is the fact that you have access to all control necessary for gaming all within fingers reach. The fact that this is a Xbox controller means it fits perfectly for console and PC gaming. Out of the box its pretty basic, you get the controller and usb-c cable to run the controller. Keep in mind this is a wired controller and is not wireless at least as of writing this review. Keep in mind this is a wired controller and is not wireless at least as of writing this review. The controller is well designed fitting comfortably in hand with side cooling grips which act to keep your hands free from sweat while the ridges add for extra grip. The backside of the controller offers two additional paddles which can be used to map your other buttons for quick access. While the front of the controller houses your standard Xbox set up with your X,Y,B,A buttons Turtle beach took it a step further by implementing a volume/chat button, super hearing button, mic mute button, equalizer button and mode select button. One thing to keep in mind is the equalizer is pre-set to four different settings and can not be adjusted, at least not that i could find that is. On the bottom of the controller you will find your 3.5 mm jack which serves as your access port for your audio/chat headset. Once a headset is connected you can then adjust volume and chat controls all via your controller. The volume button will raise or lower in game audio while the chat button will allow you to raise and lower your chat audio allowing you to find that perfect balance between the two. The super hearing button is perfect for those of you in to competitive gaming such as COD, battle royales or other such games. Once activated the audio will change allowing more emphasis on your mids and highs which makes footsteps more distinct. Believe me when i say it is definitely easier to pick up on foot steps or engine noises allowing you to not only tell when someone is coming but also pick up on the direction and distance on which they are closing in on you. The mode button allows you to switch between four different pre set profiles which all change your audio, equalizer and aim settings. Speaking of aim modes Turtle beach implemented a feature called Pro Aim Focus mode. When activated the little crosshair icon will light up on the controller letting you know that pro aim is on. What this does is adjust the sensitivity level on the right joystick based on your play or shooting style. Profile 1 will set the stick to the lowest settings allowing snipers to get a more precise shot while profile 4 will max out your sensitivity allowing run and gunners to get the advantage on the quick draw. One thing i want to touch on that i may of passed up is audio and chat quality. One thing i was worried about with using the controller as a piggyback for your headset was loss of quality. Surprisingly audio quality was very good during my play throughs of cutscenes on solo RPGs. All my mids and lows hit crisp and clean allowing me to feel every bass drop as explosions went off. While playing FPS (first person shooters) i was able to pick up on every footstep and noise near me allowing me to get the upper hand on my enemies. Chat was clean and clear allowing myself to be heard easily as well as allowing my team mates to be heard with no drop outs. Obliviously keep in mind all of this is gonna vary depending on your headset. Here's my take away from this headset. This is a very nice unit to have, especially at the price point that this unit is coming in at. What sucks is i personally own units that are double and triple the price of this controller and yet this controller performs just as good if not even slightly better in some areas. The controls are very precise and almost no lag exist. Audio is crisp and clear with not a single drop out or latency issue. My only real gripe with the controller (its a small gripe) is the fact that there appears to be no customizable options for this controller. Meaning the joystick tops can not be removed to allow for wider cushions for larger hands. Basically the whole unit appears to be modular making customizable parts almost impossible to achieve on this controller. But that is a minor complaint and one just simply worth noting. Overall if i had this controller before hand then i can promise you i definitely would of never have bought a more expensive controller as this one performs so beautifully. Do yourself a favor and stop looking around and pick yourself up one.

Great sound and control in one

I’m using this Recon controller with a matching Turtle Beach Recon headset connected via the 3.5mm plug. Although I’m using the Recon headset, the controller works with any compatible 3.5mm headset. Sound is excellent coming through the controller to the headset and sounds just as good as if the headset were connected directly to the console or PC. The controller can adjust headset volume, mic level and also has EQ and Superhuman hearing features which significantly enhance sound quality when active. The Superhuman hearing amplifies overall sound while placing a heavier emphasis on ambient sounds. The controller can adjust headset volume, mic level and also has EQ and Superhuman hearing features which significantly enhance sound quality when active. The Superhuman hearing amplifies overall sound while placing a heavier emphasis on ambient sounds. The EQ works with presets and offers four sound profiles that place emphasis on bass boost, bass and treble boost, vocal boost and signature sound. The others are self-explanatory but signature sound is more neutral and evenly balanced all around. It’s similar to an EQ with everything zeroed. The mic level controls how loud the mic projects the speaker’s voice. Gaming and music both sound terrific and it is nice to have volume and mic controls with visual indicators conveniently available right on the handset. The controller looks and functions almost identically to an Xbox controller. Aside from a few minor visual differences, the only significant functional differences are the addition of the sound features, button mapping options and two additional “quick action” buttons on the bottom of the remote. The quick action buttons are mappable and although they may be useful to some users, I personally find them annoying. I have no use for the buttons but constantly find myself accidentally hitting them due to their location and the way I grip the controller. They aren’t currently mapped on this controller, so they’re not functional at the moment and don’t affect gaming but it’s still annoying because they are practically unavoidable. Quick action button issues aside, the controller has a comfortable ergonomic feel similar to the Xbox controller. The grips, triggers and buttons are a little more textured than the Xbox controller which makes them easier to identify during intense gaming. The buttons and analog sticks have good accuracy and responsiveness. The sensitivity of the right stick can be tweaked through the Pro-Aim Focus feature. The controller rumble/vibration also works well when activated. The only thing that some may consider a con with this controller is that there is no wireless version available at the moment. With the controller wired to the console or PC and the headset wired to the controller, it can get somewhat cumbersome having two cables heading in opposite directions. Thankfully, the cables for both the Recon controller and headphones are lengthy and constructed of durable, tear resistant braided fabric. The detachable USB-C to USB-A controller cable is ten-feet long, which should be adequate length for most stationary usage scenarios. A wired controller may sacrifice some freedom but this particular controller offers added convenience in return. It facilitates headset sound control, mic gain control and on-the-fly button mapping all through the controller rather than being forced to use separate software and hardware for these tasks.

Tough competition to Xbox controller
30 July 2021

I can't believe I'm saying this but I love this controller more than my Xbox one. The only thing that I slightly dislike on this is the fact that it is not wireless. It comes with a 10' long cable (a braided USB-C to USB-A) which is more than enough for me but I'm accustomed to play with the wireless ones. So it was little hard for me initially to get used to it. Controller feels great and seems to work perfectly with my PC. The controller feels great in hand and buttons are solid. There's a lot of value in this controller with features such as textured grip, programmable buttons, Series X Share button, and the built in audio controls. Connecting this controller to my Xbox was a breeze and I was able to get it to work easily. It was practically plug and play. There's a lot of value in this controller with features such as textured grip, programmable buttons, Series X Share button, and the built in audio controls. Connecting this controller to my Xbox was a breeze and I was able to get it to work easily. It was practically plug and play. This controller has amazed me in it's quality and feel overall. The programmable buttons on the rear can even be programmed to a sequence of buttons rather than a single input as well! The vibration motors work great and it's super comfortable. It truly feels like an Xbox One controller (honestly better due to the grippy texture of the rear plate. It feels like mid-weight as it is not too heavy nor too light. Nice clicky buttons, good spring on the controller paddles. I used it to play Metal Gear Solid V game and I can't tell how many times those two buttons on the rear of the controller have come in handy. It's literally a game changer. I cannot speak for long term use and how well it holds up, but out of the box it feels super high quality compared to the cheaper controllers as well as the official Xbox and PlayStation controllers. The more I use it the more I fall in love with it. Turtle beach is a renowed company and it has lived up to its expectations. Good quality controller, sturdy, very responsive buttons... over all very nice quality. And this comes from an avid gamer, and one who has bought other 3rd party controllers online, which were usually subpar. Feels exactly like an xbox one controller except the handles are textured and easier to hold onto for longer periods of time. So far, I couldn't be happier with this. I waited an entire week and have used this controller pretty heavily before I could write a review because I wanted to be thorough. Well here you go, my honest opinion: 5 out of 5 stars!

The cushioned grips allow airflow, preventing your hands from getting sweaty during any period of a gaming session. While the face buttons are not mechanical, they are solidly responsive. There’s no need to press hard to make sure that button action has connected upon pressing. The triggers and the bumpers have a raised, tactile grip design along with the rear action buttons. Fingers won’t be slipping off, costing the player precious reaction time. Speaking of reaction time, the triggers are smooth are react accordingly. I didn’t have to compensate for ‘dead zone’ trigger areas that you might find with 3rd party controllers. When it comes to the analog sticks, I had no issue with frustrating dead zones. The crosshairs always landed on where I pointed the sticks towards. Interface & Sound: The Recon interface is really easy once you’ve quickly read the included instructions. Cycling through the controller features is a breeze. The button remapping is another welcomed and easy feature for the Recon. When it comes to First Person Shooters, I need to have the crouch button easily accessible for those drop shots but that usually requires me to lift my finger off the analog stick to press the button. With remapping, I can still have my thumb on the stick and pull off a drop shot because I reassigned the B button to the rear button. This will prove to be useful for all sorts of players. Now, if you’re unfamiliar with the sound options that Turtle Beach is known for, then you are in for an audio treat. Mic monitoring is a must for any gamer. Whether you’re chatting in an online squad or recording gameplay commentary, you mustn’t be talking LOUD all because you cannot hear yourself. Having the mic monitoring built into the Recon controller allows you to use any headset (with a 3.5mm jack) with the Recon controller. What’s better is that if you already own a Turtle Beach headset that uses a Super Amp controller dial, you can bypass that and simply plug your headset into the Recon and still enjoy the great sound features. No multiple wires are getting in the way. One headset plugs into the controller. Simple. I mentioned the Mic monitoring but I need to mention the sound options that the Recon controller offers. The Recon offers the audio benefits that Turtle Beach has renowned for. The notched bar displays the choices for the player: Mic Monitoring, EQ Setting, Feature Level, Button Mapping, Mic Mute, and Superhuman Hearing. The EQ setting offers four different sound options for the player: Signature Sound, Bass Boost, Bass and Treble Boost, and Vocal Boost. Select the sound option that is best suited for the kind of game you enjoy. I prefer the bass and treble boost for the ‘action movie’ sound experience. You can change the EQ settings easily while playing so if you went from playing Halo and switch to Warzone and want to listen for opposing player’s footsteps then you can change the EQ setting. Select what your playstyle is. The Pro Aim Focus Mode is a feature that I haven’t seen offered before in a controller right out of the box. I have seen a similar feature offered with more expensive ‘pro’ controllers that required me to plug the controller into a PC and calibrate that feature. The Recon controller simply had me holding down on the rear action button to activate the Pro Aim Focus. Some might wonder what benefit does the Pro Aim Focus offer? Well, let’s say you’re playing Apex Legends or Call of Duty and you see an upcoming opportunity for a sweet sniper shot but you need to ‘slow’ down your otherwise high sensitivity analog stick settings. The Pro Aim allots you that moment to calibrate your shot and connect it. The Pro Aim feature sets will vary from player to player. Once you read the instructions, accessing the options will be second nature. I should also mention that the Recon controller can be plugged into your PC if desired. The controller is ready to go without needing to download any software or configuring app. Game On: I am pretty impressed with the Recon controller considering this is Turtle Beach’s first foray into the controller market. I have a feeling that the Recon will be the first of many great controllers we can expect in the future. If you’re looking to buy an affordable controller for yourself or someone you know and are wanting to have the audio benefits that Turtle Beach is known for, then I believe that you will be very pleased with the Recon controller.

We're in love!
20 March 2022

So, I decided to replace the old XBox One and PowerA controllers that are just trashed at this point (all four experience stick drift). We've only had them for about 2 weeks, but here are our thoughts so far. Comfortable? Very! I didn't think the rubberized gross would make any difference, but they definitely feel better in the hand and seem less sweaty after a long session. My 8 year old and I (6'4") both found them to be very comfortable and didn't have any problems, although all controllers are a bit small in my hands. Accurate? Exceedingly! Wether playing first, third or twin-stick shooters, racing or platforming, we've found the buttons, sticks and triggers to feel very firm without feeling stiff which allows for a much more accurate feeling. Longevity? Don't know yet. They FEEL high quality and SEEM like they'd last, but 2 weeks isn't long enough to KNOW that. Extras? Meh. I don't really care too much about the extras, but the ones I've used are nice to have. When I've plugged headset in the EQ did sound different between the various settings; the programmable buttons are perfectly placed for how I hold my controller so that my middle finger hits them naturally; the aim-assist didn't seem to make a difference to me; the super human hearing was crazy though! Conclusion? We love these things, sincerely. Definitely feels like an upgrade over what we've been struggling with.

Well thought out for ease of use

The Turtle Beach Recon controller caught my eye mostly for the chat buttons up on top. It's nice having these easily accessible rather than having to jump into any menus on the Xbox itself. The controller itself was feels a little less chuncky on the grips, compared to the official controller, however they have a wonderful grip with it's ergonomic cooling, I was questioning how they would feel but after hours of gameplay between battle royale, action/adventure and other games my palms didn't get sweaty and I've noticed that in the past when using other controllers. Through the long sessions I didn't feel any soreness in my hands, I don't know if they truly are, but they fill ever so slightly thinner and thinking I would be gripping them a little tighter may have been an issue. This wasn't the case, the grip was really comfortable and I like how the programmable rear buttons sat directly under my finger. The triggers, bumpers and rear buttons all head a texture to it, they feel like a sturdy plastic, I found this nice for the rear quick action buttons since you can easily find them. The face buttons all felt responsive, I never really had an issue with one getting sticking or not responding. Sticks were great, didn't have any sort of drifting. D-Pad I didn't use much, but any time I needed to swing anything I was hitting the intended direction without error even with it being a circular D-pad. The mic communication buttons are well placed up top on the controller, the volume and chat buttons are easy to reach, as they are closest to where your thumbs rest, the others I look at since the lights indicate your selection but you really only need to select your preset and not think about it again unless you want to change. The Audio has several presets depending on where you want the audio to focus, I typically had the superhuman hearing off, it did make things louder, however it also made me feel like things where closer than they actually are, which can help you react before hand, but made it feel like I was getting flanked in the middle of another firefight. I felt the standard audio while changing the EQ was best personally, but may differ for others. The programmable quick action buttons are pretty awesome, you can configure multiple presets depending on what you're playing, A and B was a preferred for me since I can crouch or jump easily without having to take my hands off the thumbsticks. I did play with the Pro-Aim focus and I did notice a difference in feel when aiming down sight, it's a little hard for me to pinpoint what but I did leave this setting on for sometime. I did however find if you have the Pro-Aim on highest setting and hold the quick-action button behind your right thumb stick it did significantly slow down my turning speed. I had it set to my crouch, so I would hold the button to slide and try to turn around but I would turn very very slowly. I switched crouch to the button behind my left hand and this wasn't an issue anymore, plus you do not run into the same thing when using the face buttons, so something with the quick action back right. Other than that the only thing that was off to me was the position of the change view and menu button, have to reach a little lower with my thumb than I am used to so I would look down for that, but would get used to that over time. Overall the build is great, sturdy controller and braided wire, I'm happy! Definitely going to use this for any controller based PC games while using it for the Series X when my batteries arent' charged. The controller being updated to include the share button is a nice touch! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a wired controller, the audio controls alone through this in front of any other wired controller for me since you get that quick volume adjustment without having to pop in a menu or purchase a stereo adapter for the controller!
