They can be used without being turned on, but the difference in sound is noticeable. Overall a very nice mid-priced headset. Clear sound, cool usable features and comfortable.

I've used A LOT of headsets and I was immediately impressed with this one! It is all around great! It has nice thick padding on the ears and head for maximum comfort even if you are wearing it for hours. It came with the charging cord and little connection piece you plug into your system then you are ready to go. The mic flips up to mute. It sounds great and has super convenient placement of all the buttons so if you need to adjust anything mid game. The battery life is amazing, by far the best I've seen! I also saw it specifically said glasses friendly so I tried it with mine on and that was very true! Even after an hour I didn't get that uncomfortable pressure around my glasses I usually do. Overall this is really great and I highly recommend it!!
