The UGEARS 460 Locomotive with Tender is the most extravagant model yet, it incorporates all the technical solutions from previous model designs and more! I purchased this for Diwali 2018. The product has good finishing and wonderful details to everything. It took me 12 hours to build it.Everything was going perfect in the first half. Things got complicated in the second part where I had to couple the gears. I love trains and building models so this was really enjoyable for me to do. It's a bit challenging but mostly just time consuming. You do have to be ginger when removing the parts from their boards. Do not force anything at any point! Learned this the hard way. But luckily it's wooden and all parts can be glued back together. My only real qualm with the design is that the engine is reliant on a single toothpick to hold it. I made the mistake of over-winding the engine and the toothpick snapped and all the rubber bands went flying back into the engineer compartment which proved to be a pita to fix. But ultimately i replaced the toothpick with a metal track pin so that won't be happening again. This locomotive is definitely a fun experience to build. The pieces will challenge you and will definitely take some time and effort. The final result for me has been a combination of disappointing and very confusing. I have followed all the construction instructions down to the letter, lubricated every gear and wheel that was labeled for lubrication, and trimmed every axle to the exact size. Despite all of this, the train barely runs. My first test run resulted in a distance of about 1 or 2 feet after winding the rubber band about four or five times more than instructed (if you wind the engine as many times as they tell you to, it doesn't run at all). A few things I've discovered along the way:1) Even if your kid smashes a component under a rocking chair (long story) repairs are easy with care and carpenter's glue.2) I have found considerable force is sometimes necessary when "inserting tab A into slot B", possibly because in my high-humidity area, the wood is slightly swollen. Anyway, I've also found that such joints are much easier with a little wax lubrication. I've also resorted to a small modelmaker's hammer on occasion.3) Speaking of wax, instead of applying it with a toothpick, I've found it much easier to use the toothpick to scrape a ... MoreThis is my first (probably not last) UGEARS model and I'm having a blast with the assembly. I've also resorted to a small modelmaker's hammer on occasion.3) Speaking of wax, instead of applying it with a toothpick, I've found it much easier to use the toothpick to scrape a little pile of wax shavings onto the table, then pick up a pinch with my fingers and rub it on the pieces. This works particularly well on the gears.4) Some of the sliding/rotating surfaces can have tiny rough spots from where they were attached to the parts board. I use very fine sandpaper to smooth them away.5) For separating the pieces from the boards, I use a very slim craft blade (like X-Acto) - not a box cutter as shown in the diagrams.I have completed the main drive wheels and gears assembly and I'm very pleased and slightly surprised at how easily it rolls. Back to it!

High quality wood, laser cut parts that pop out of the sheets easily, clearly numbered steps and parts and detailed instructions. And the amazing thing, absolutely no glue needed. Yet the kit is solid and totally functional when complete. You do have to pay attention to the directions to ensure that all the moving parts are in the correct spot. But if you do, as we did, then you have a model that not only looks great but also works great. It's fun just watching all the gears moving as the train moves along. I bought the race car model for my husband for his birthday. He enjoys model-building, likes race cars, and loves truly uniquely-crafted items. This one was all that! It is a challenging model--he's been working on it for a couple of weeks now, but he is really enjoying it. The laser-cut wood pieces are precise and fit well. It's very cool-looking, and really amazing to see it moving when all the gears engage.

Don't force anything.I broke a couple of parts through carelessness, but was able to glue them back together with Gorilla Original Gorilla Glue Minis, 12 g, Brown . Nothing too serious. Just be careful.It won't go very far when fully cranked up, but that's not the point. It's more of something that you look at, knowing that it all works.If I built another one, it would probably only take 6 or 8 hours now that I'm more familiar with how it works.Anyway, I hope he likes it.

The suggested waxing of the cocktail stick moving parts with a tea light to grease them is not enough. The product could do with being supplied with a small container of proper grease or to suggest a mechanics grease to over come this issue. If you wish to purchase the extra track it will set you back another £30 for 4 meters, the railway platform is another almost £60.
This is the worst my birthday gift from my wife. At first time it looked like solid but after open box , over 100 toothpicks spread over dining table. At first time I could not get the idea with toothpicks but then I realized they were connecting important items to each other like train tires and wheels what must be really strong but they are not. Also they need many cuts with using blades , I cut many times my hand so this is absolutely not for someone who you like. Holes are so small for toothpick , many times I broke them and bought new one from Kroger. Also when removing pieces from main piece, it is so easy to break it , each piece has been tied tightly . At first time it looked like solid but after open box , over 100 toothpicks spread over dining table. At first time I could not get the idea with toothpicks but then I realized they were connecting important items to each other like train tires and wheels what must be really strong but they are not. Also they need many cuts with using blades , I cut many times my hand so this is absolutely not for someone who you like. Holes are so small for toothpick , many times I broke them and bought new one from Kroger. Also when removing pieces from main piece, it is so easy to break it , each piece has been tied tightly . Bets thing it wont work , it wont run. First I built it and not ran then my wife use candle oils and many stuff , nope , not running. If you know anyone you do not like , dont wait and buy it, this is the best gift you should never buy.
Yes ,it is an incredible model and incredible laser cut pieces to work with. There are some serious difficulties that some who are highly experienced can still face as you tear pieces out, attach in the right sequence, connect with the correct piece, insert the right length of toothpick (remember, no toothpick really have the identical diameter, each is slightly different and some of this has to be sanded or such to fit, otherwise, while putting the toothpick through so many of the pieces, you would break many toothpicks and will be redoing some of your parts over and over again) and hang the end of toothpicks on yet another small piece jammed in the body of your train, align the wheels that you built, and,.......more. Yes, someone suggested various tools, which the product does not seem to indicate that you need, but you NEED them. Some pieces are so fragile that as you are trying to separate from the board, you can break it. Exact knife is almost a must for most of the pieces you want to pop out. in order to be accurate and also safe. Yes, it is a wonderful model, innovative in any way, since before the laser cut technique this level of complexity was likely not possible. But if you are used to model building, you can follow the instructions, even if you could not read. I am done with the train part but not the tender yet. I received this on Christmas day and enjoyed building this immensely, (with some frustrations when pieces won't insert as it tell you, or the dimensions just so slightly off that you have to force some pieces to fit in). I am a train lover so this was a great gift. My husband did provide the additional tools (I had exacto knife already, but) to help me do this ever so accurately to ensure that everything is done according to the instructions and beyond. I look forward to reading other's post-experience posts. It is going to require patience, high level of care for your pieces....
