I'll admit it. I am primarily a fly fisherman. A friend of mine wanted to fish with me at Pyramid Lake in Nevada. Since he fishes conventional gear, I decided to pick up an 6'6" medium Ugly Stik Elite rod with the Model 30 reel combination. I loaded it with 30 pound test braid. The rod performed beautifully. It was able to cast the combination of a three eighths ounce egg sinker and Woolly Bugger combination very easily. It handled two to six pound Cutthroat Trout easily. The huge surprise was the reel. I expected the package reel to be so so. Nonetheless, it peformed well. It cranked decently under load. I had this rod for a year and a half and I can say without a doubt the best rod I've handled. The tip is sensitive enough to feel even the smallest bites and the rod itself is simply beautiful. The quality of the real is superb and you can really see the time the designers took in designing the rod itself. I lent this rod to my inexperienced friend for a trip and he had no trouble whatsoever. He actually accidently broke the tip of the rod by slamming the door of his truck shut. He came back very apologetic thinking it was a very expensive rod. He had no idea how much the rod was and he was just guessing off its build quality. That's the type of rod and reel this is. You will not be disappointed, whether your buying for yourself or maybe as a gift for an aspiring ... MoreI had this rod for a year and a half and I can say without a doubt the best rod I've handled. Best medium power spinning rod in its class. Reel is hit and miss but the rod itself is a great 2 piece. If on sale don’t hesitate. Rod is extra fast action. Medium power. Perfect for bass and species alike.

Gave this as a gift. He hasn't used it yet, but very happy to receive it !The first Canadian Tire employee who helped me knew nothing about fishing. However, I went back and was helped by a very knowledgeable young man.

Good Baitcaster to First Start On
27 June 2022

I bought this baitcasting combo about a year ago now just before July and it was a great buy. For the price, you are getting a very solid rod and a decent reel. After about a year of fishing and multiple drops completely in the water, the reel casts a bit less but still nothing to be ashamed of. The handle on the reel has the smallest of side to side movement. Overall it's holding up great for 12 months of rough use. This combo was my first baitcaster and a couple of weeks ago I got a new reel and rod from abu garcia. Big difference but then again you get what you pay for most of the time. One thing to notice is that the combo is pretty heavy for what it is. Also the cork end of the rod, about half an inch broke off last summer after about 2 months. Still works ... MoreI bought this baitcasting combo about a year ago now just before July and it was a great buy. For the price, you are getting a very solid rod and a decent reel. The rod is definitely the eye-catcher in this reel and rod combo as it is very good for the price of both. To sum up, if you are new to baitcasters, I would suggest buying this combo to try out. If your more experienced with fishing and have used one before and you know you want one, don't bother with this deal.

Good first baitcaster
25 April 2018

The good is the price and that it comes on an ugly stick, so you know the rod will probably out live the owner. The reel is solid enough and the adjustments are simple and straight forward. It looks excellent. The bad is it's not very smooth to retrieve. Not horrible and does break in a little over time. It's also very heavy for what it is. Finally, even with proper adjustment for each lure, it's slow to respond when casting and tough to cast lite tackle (especially if you are new to baitcasters). I would buy it again if I were occasional fisherman, it was great to learn on, but if you are like me and fish multiple days a week, I would really consider shopping around for something nicer.

Great rod, poor reel
22 May 2020

Purchased this year for use at the trailer. The rod is excellent like all Ugly Stik rods, but the reel is awful. The reel has 2 bearings and is not very smooth at all especially when the spool reaches each end of its travel, it tends to bind a little before changing direction. Switched out the reel for a Mitchel 300 C and now its a great combo, not the best but good enough for me. The rod is very light and very sensitive and extremely strong, great for a multitude of different fish species. If I was to purchase this again, I would purchase the rod and reel separately.

Great rod, wrong description. Valid specs included
20 June 2022

Very nice rod and reel combo, I was fortunate to have one in great working condition with no issues. Canadian tires description and specifications are very incorrect!!!!! The correct info I shall give now, The 7’ rod reel combo has a 3500 series reel, not a 3000 series like mentioned. the 7’ is a fast action, not extra fast like the 6’6” elite spinning rod. And there are 8 guides on the rod. Not 7. It is Also rated for 6-14lb line and a 1/4 oz- 5/8 oz lure. Great rod and reel none the less. Even better when on sale. The bass are no match for this guy.

Lite as a feather
20 April 2021

I have owned an ugly stik for over 20 years and i enjoy it, but it was time for a new one. After ceveral and to 2 rotator surgeries I needed to find new fishing gear. This new pole is just what I needed. It is lite enough for me carry a good distance and still be able to toss my line in without aggravating my shoulders and neck. First toss in, i was not expecting to get a bite, but I did and the rod held up to the large mouth bass I had caught. I highly recommend this rod and reel if you have any issues with your arms and shoulders.

It’s silky smooth to cast whether it be a a big or small spoon and every lure in between but remember to reset the drag to lure you are using. Great for open water be it a lake or a wide river with no or little tree or bush on shore line, it proves to be trickier to cast on a small creek with high vegetation along the shores. This combo is deadly in the right hands be it a Rainbow Trout to big Northern Pike(Jack Fish) and every fish in between they all fall victim to the Combo. Ugly won't quit. The Ugly Stik Elite series features 35% more graphite than Ugly Stik GX2 for a lighter weight rod, while maintaining the legendary toughness you've come to expect from Ugly Stik. Ugly Stik Elite rods feature Ugly Tech construction, premium cork handles, Ugly Tuff guides and the Ugly Stik Clear Tip design. Fishing has gotten too pretty. Unscratched sparkle barges with nuclear-powered engines. Rods that act like skittish thoroughbreds instead of unshod workhorses. Fish pictures taken for 'likes' instead of refrigerator doors. It's time to fish the way it's meant to be done, with tough, durable tackle built to provide ten whopper fish pics for every one of some dandy holding a fancy rod and a fingerling. It's time to fish ugly.
