Unison Colour : Soft Pastel : Ocean Blue 11

(300 reviews)

The pastels are made in Northumberland and contain only pure pigments in a cycle of related hues, instead of adding white or black to the colours. The result is intense, vibrant colour not muddied by the blending of colours. Unison's pastels contain very little binder, making them truly soft and smooth. They are mixed to meticulous recipes and are based on traditional pigments such as cadmiums, cobalts and natural and synthetic earths. Pastels measure approximately 2-1/8" long × 5/8" diameter (54 mm × 16 mm). Sticks vary slightly due to the hand-making process.

I wanted to try Unison pastels SOOOO badly but didn't want to break the bank. This small set allowed me to try several colors and values under $20! Such a bargain! Packed to perfection. Please make more of these exclusive assorted sets, Blick!!!

I have purchased this product in different sets and colors.

I have purchased many of the Unison soft pastels both in sets as well as individually. The colors are beautiful, pastels leave a beautiful mark on the UART Pastel Paper 400 , and I am loving the blues to create water/ ocean scenes. Full sticks come with a paper wrap that is a challenge to take off where the half sticks come without the paper label. I like the half stick sets of pastels as they are priced well.

I love the feel of this pastel

I bought myself just one Unison pastel to try. I am a novice with soft pastels, and self taught, and am just now graduating to artist quality sticks. Compared to other high quality brands that I'm experimenting with (Ludwig, Sennelier) I really liked the Unison. It has a medium-soft feel that the paper tooth immediately grabs - enough that I had to adjust my touch with it. The color is pure, and as long as I use that light touch, layers well.I also received the Unison Starter Set as a Christmas gift, and am very happy with that. My only complaint - and this is not necessarily Unison - is that one of the pastels was partially crumbled at the end. The pastels themselves are packed in foam and a sturdy box, and it was shipped (by Blick) with enough packing to keep ... MoreI bought myself just one Unison pastel to try. I also used one soft pastel (in an olive green) from a different pro brand.

I would buy again
10 August 2023

This is absolutely an amazing set of colours. I just started pastel and have a few small sets but the colours are very bright and saturated and wanted the colours for the shadows and highlights. These are perfect and filled the void. Have used lots of them already.I am impressed with Dickblick. I am on the west coast Canada as well as remote and had ordered them for my birthday (on behalf of my husband :) which was less then two weeks away. Knowing there is time to process, get a quote on shipping then time to pick, package and ship - I was not sure I was going to get them in time (my fault) BUT I ordered on a Sunday and had them by FRIDAY - way before my birthday. Was very excited and impressed. Good job to everyone there, you make a big difference. Thanks a bunch :)

The best "go to this brand" pastel out there
8 May 2023

Unison is a great maker of pastel. What I like about them is that you can get color range sets. This is SOOOO useful to selecting the right value for a painting. They a wonderful consistency, and are a great value. I highly recommend the color range sets, especially the one for grays. Just Fabulous!

The nicest soft pastels but.....
20 May 2023

These are the nicest soft pastels I've used, and I have a 120 stick set of Senneliers. Also many sticks of Great American, Mount Vision, full set of the harder Nupastels, andabout a dozen sticks of Terry Ludwig . The Unisons are almost on a par with Terry Ludwigs for my use. I've subtracted a star because the set of 120 Unisons doesn't have as good a color selection as the set of 120 Senneliers. The Sennies are much softer, so they're not as versatile for my use.

These are the best I've tried
20 April 2023

I have hundreds of pastels sticks of several different brands and softnesses. These are probably going to be my favorite pastels. They are extremely close to Terry Ludwig in quality, I think. I have full sets of Sennelier half sticks, many Mount Vision, Great American, and a full set of Rembrandt), but I'm going to find a way to afford a full set of Uni half sticks too.

This is my favorite pastel substrate.
22 June 2022

I have been buying velour paper for years. It's my absolute favorite substrate for pastels. I do from time to time also use UART sanded paper but I just love everything about Hahnemuhle velour. There's a little bit of a learning curve to overcome when applying pastels to velour compared to sanded paper but the results for me are well worth it. It's also not as expensive as most of the sanded papers so if things don't turn out it's not quite as bad.

Unison goes down like butter, nice and smooth
25 September 2023

Pretty grey green color great for distant trees and areas where you want a more neutral color. Unison sticks are really very large. You can break them into smaller pieces if you like or leave them whole. They will last a long time.

Unison review
15 February 2019

Having never used Unison pastels before, I purchased a couple of dark colors (Addition 36 - a dark purple and Red 1) to see why so many pastel artists rave about them.I found these sticks to be very densely pigmented, solid and easy to handle. Their size and shape are such that I feel no need to break them. These are not crumbly pastels and they lay down their pigment with ease and without scratchiness. The pigment feels, upon application, to be milled to the finest particles possible without giving the pastel an overly buttery feel.Their size is about half of Mount Vision sticks and the price is double, which makes them a bit out of my reach for filling my palette with them. I will, however, go to Unison's offerings for those lovely, hard to find colors to round ... MoreHaving never used Unison pastels before, I purchased a couple of dark colors (Addition 36 - a dark purple and Red 1) to see why so many pastel artists rave about them.I found these sticks to be very densely pigmented, solid and easy to handle.
